So, my question: Which of the following graphic styles look better / more interesting?

Idea 1:

And Idea 2:

Creed Malay

The second one by a wide margin.  The second I find really interesting looking and evocative, the first just looks kind of.. unfinished, like a rough sketch of a thing.

Hi-res low detail art is really tricky to get good looking - if you do want to go with the first one, I'd definetly try again using thicker outlines, and maybe handling the angles and all more stylistically.

Are the two depicting the same thing exactly?

The second one is certainly more unique, and would give your game a fairly unique look.
Plus, I'm assuming the 2nd type would take slightly less effort to make than the first anyhow.

The first is a bit messed up as far as perspective goes, by the way.

Now, with his very own game: Alien Time Zone

Everybody has said something in common so far:
- It's your choice what style you prefer, depending on your narration...
...But...
- The fact that the first one is harder to draw would force you to make it look more finished. So far, it looks unfinished, therefore it leads people to prefer the second choice.

I think the first one would look nicer once it's finished, but the second one is more unique. I really like all of the brightness of the first one too.

The second one makes me think of 8-bit platform games!  Is that the intention?  I'm not really sure how suited it would be to an adventure game though - I actually like the first screen, perhaps with a bit more detail (said in the knowledge that I could never do anything half as good as what you've got already).

Second, minus the scanlines and crazy palette

I would have a better idea if you included a character or two in each room. What would the sprites look like in these two styles?

I dunno, I like the second as well and for some reason both the scanlines and palette are appealing to me.

Idea two totally rocks. I dunno if the scan lines and busted up monitor UI/border are part of the final visuals - but they hella should be, very nice indeed.
