Title: Wip: Oldmans face (Update: (27.12.)He got a body!)
Post by: Seminus on Wed 22/12/2004 11:10:36
Hi folks,
back again :) This time with a little wip on one of my charakter for my upcoming adventuregame. It's at the moment just the head without hair. (this comes next...) C&C welcome! What do you think?

[Edit] Added a body. Next task is to create some real legs and feets. And find him some cloth ;)  [edit]

Woah, nice work there. The difference around his eye's area makes him look satanic. If you intended that way, then I suggest you don't put much hair on him but do put some

I suggest to put wrinkles on him. Right now he looks too young to be an old man.
I like the glasses, it makes him look old in those.

Looks, great. Kinda looks like the guy from Bladerunner. Are his brows supposed to be at different heights?

Nice, but the right eye looks like its going to pop out! He reminds me more of the guy from enternal darkness

Nostrils.
They're too thin.

Thx for the critics!

@theDude:
The eyebrows are ment to be this way. I think this makes more sens when I've done the texture work.

@InCreator:
Thx man! Your are right! Change that rightaway!

@Potter:
Hmm. Ok. Have to change something there.

Nice hair, although it doesn't really stand out because the character's face is still untextured.

How did you model that hair, by the way? Is there a special technique?

I've made the hair the hard way and used splines for each hair and placed them by hand...
I know its's madness but well thats the way I did it...  :-[

Yes the textures aren't done yet and this will cost my much time to to them...

Sorry to be an arse and spoil all your effort... But it seems "textile" of "cottonish" for me...   :-[

I don't really know how to help, as I know nothing about 3-d design, but, if asked, I prefered the bald one.

Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry...

Hehe! Nothing to be sorry about! :) This is the Critics Lounge and its importent that everyone says its opinion about posted artworks.
I'm by myself aren't totally happy with the result and I'm working on changing it good to see that I'm not the onlyone who's not sadisfied with the result. :)

Im always setting myself new challanges and I was wondering what program did you use? because I just want to try it out.

Nice hair but the eyebrows look a bit funny

Thats the spirit! Like myself allways out to search for new challanges! Well because of my job, I've access to 3DsMax V7. It's a great tool but exspencive...

Anyway there are many other tools that are free/or cheaper and can do most of the importent stuff you need to make a model like this one.

Well I will rework the hair again. Tomorrow I think...

If you're willing to use a trial version of 3DSMax 7, you can get it at www.discreet.com

Yes, I hate to tell you but I prefer the bald version better also.

I'm not sure about the eyebrows. I understand they are supposed to be like that, just seems a little awkward.

The nostral balls are sharp. Like where the nostrals meet the face, it's not round.

I'd also shorten the mouth up a little bit, make the lips slightly bigger, and add in mouth dimples. Mouths have little holes on the ends when closed, and also have a little bit of a crease. You've got a bit of one on his right side. Exagerating this feature may make his mouth look 'older'.

I think his hairline ends too abrubtly, which is making the hair look... awkward. I'd try a different texture too.

Have changed most of the thing you didin't liked. Better this way? (See first post)

@Erwin_Br:
this model has no textures at all at moment. Just some simple lightening. (even the hair is just a model with no texture) I will make the textures as soon I'm done with modeling part.

Title: Re: Wip: Oldmans face (Update: (24.12.)Major changes on hair)
Post by: Evil on Fri 24/12/2004 19:56:07
Yes, it looks much much better now.

With the the newly added lighting, the hair is beginning to grow on me (no pun intended).

But, as Erwin has said, the hair line does end too abrubtly, almost as if it's glued on. Maybe some shorter hairs may help fade the ends a bit.

Rather then waiting until the moddel is finished, I would try adding some texture. It may be more finished then you think.

yeah, it looks awesome now. His hair is maybe too long for an old guy, but it's ok if you intended it

Very good! All he needs now are eyes, and a brain to bring him to life! Ma ha ha ha!(guess who watched frankeinstein(sp) yesterday) But really he will look a lot better if you gave him irises and pupils.

ps I found this free 3d software called anim8or at http://www.anim8or.com/
edit:heres a head a made using it

its kinda crap compared to Seminus's old man head but it is my 1st try

Wow, this guy is really comming along. The lower body needs some work but the upper body looks good. Only thing I would change would be his shoulders. When your arms are out like that, the muscle on the shoulder bulges up. Here's a ballerinato show you what I mean.

(http://www.nbs-enb.on.ca/pages/firststeps/images/2nd%20position.jpg)

This girl isn't really the same statue of the old man, but close muscle density wise. Though he's more, erm, saggy. Here's an example of how he might be changed.

That there is an old man in a young man's body.

Go to a public bath and have a look at the bodies of the over-60 crowd(discreetly, mind). The sad truth of life is that the body decays as it ages. Everything sags. Your average old man has a paunch and a stoop, but even someone who has kept fit all life will not look young.

Instead of sleek, firm muscles, make them hang more loosely. Spindly wrists and saggy biceps. Man-teats. Swollen knees and joints.

And I'm sure that's not his feet, right?

Perhaps give him some spots, scars, birthmarks, I mean an old guy without scars?

Thx for all the comments.
Well I just started today with the body and with the next update I will make him look older. This is just a wip. My plan was to make first a rough male body, then add the details. But anyway thanks for the tips! I will use them.

@Snarky:
Nope this are just some dummy feets. I will make th real feets tommorow. :)

@Evil:
Thx man will change that for the next update.

I wouldn't spend too much time and energy on his body features if the man's going to have clothes, which will hide all the work you put into it.
