here's how my character looks against rincewind's style of background he's going to be doing for my game.
i dunno, to me something looks a little off about how the two images mesh, like they don't fit quite right together.
what could either of us do to make the images look more cohesive?
thanks!

make another background
or
make another character :P
haha...well, the problem isn't as much the visual styles clashing as it is something else. i think his style fits mine pretty well, but theres something that just makes my character look a little out of place.

I think it's the use of colours and the drawing style
your styles differ a lot
on the character, try replacing the black lines with darker versions of the filling colour
Or vice versa. I really like the black outlines better than the coloured outlines. It's probably just the comic book junky in me, though.
Also, the colours of Mr. Wizard are much more vibrant than in the background. So, yeah... they don't really go together. They're both good, they just don't fit.
Hm... That hadn't really appeared to me until now... Drats.
Luckily, I haven't started drawing any real backgrounds for the game yet, so I could easily include black outlines in my bg's if that would make it looks better. (Even though I prefer the no-outline look myself... ;D )
its that the character has such strong black outlines, and the BG has none.
( ( ( <( -_-)> ) ) )
I also prefer non black outlines
i didnt say i prefered non black outlines, actually i prefer black outlines actually, i just said that one has them and one hasn't.
( ( ( <( -_-)> ) ) )
I didn't say you said that
I was stating rincewind with 'also'
Undergroundling sent me his character to see if i could make it fit better with the bg - I hope you like it.
I toyed around a little, and tried to remove all black outlines, but the hair and his shoes were a bit tricky...
I'm not 100% about the result - I could easily just do the backgrounds differently if you're not satisfied with the outcome. (I mean, it is your game, after all... ;D )

think he looks great, couldnt put him on the bg could you?
i think darker outlines than that.. it is now in my eyes no outlines.. maybe i have to go see (or not) a doctor?
custard:
Thanks - And I really didn't think that far... Hehe. Will try.
Synthetique:
Better see a doctor. I'd say it's serious.
Actually, there are outlines - But not as accentuated as before... :P
You could re-draw the characters to fit better.. if you did, I'd say make him a tad thinner or at least smaller.
Here's an experiment you could do.. take the pic of the wizard and put it over the background in photoshop.. mess with the brightness/contrast until it fits then use those same settings for your character pic.
I think the character actually fits a lot better like that.
I'm just gonna do some touch up work on him and I'll post it back here with the updated screenshot!

I did a disgustingly quick edit. I used Undergroundling's original character pic, and then I took Rincewind's background, darkened it and boosted the contrast.

I also used a filter (Bad Dragonrose!) to make a sort of outline, but that didn't work to well. The main thing I wanted to get across was that the colours in Rincewind's background are too light for the character.

I think this looks a lot better here :)
Granted, the background colors still need to be more vibrant, but this isnt a final screen for the game, just more of a test to establish an overall visual style.
I'm still gonna do a few minor touchups on the character, but I think we're a lot closer to establishing our style than we were before.

ooooohh that looks soo much better
Dragonrose, it looks a bit like an emboss-filter. :P
However, the character/background do mesh a bit better now. A suggestion: try an enhance edges or unsharpen-mask filter instead.
better underground...
btw, have you got the talking animation fixed?
That looks a lot better now. However, I would recommend fixing the tree canopy - it's far too small to look credible.
yeah, i really agree that this blends a lot better. the only thing is rince needs to make the background colors a little more bold and vibrant and i think it'll be all set.
N3TGraph: i DO have the animation fixed and that thread is now updated with the new animation.
