Title: Woman side-view pixel critique requested.
Post by: poc301 on Fri 17/04/2009 17:41:38
Many thanks for the help in this forum with the front view of my new lady-character, but now I am unhappy with the side view I got.

Here is the front view :

Here is the side view I have to go with it:

I am not happy with the way the hair looks up near the forehead..  Its almost too large of a brow.. The right leg looks slightly wrong somehow (it is supposed to be turned slightly away from the 'camera'), and the breasts look too..  I don't know.. Large?  Or maybe not proportionate..  I don't know.  I think its a good start, but I just can't place what is wrong with it to fix it.  I am hoping someone can provide an outside perspective to this.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Frumpy.

Chest's a bit odd.

In fact, I'd suggest you don't go for the straight on view, or the side view (unless walking), and opt for a 3/4 view when the character's standing about, talking or whatnot.

It's much easier to make things look pretty if the viewpoint's changed.  Trust me, I'm hopeless at drawing females to begin with, but slight pose revolve and whizz bang, still pretty hopeless.  Massive improvement, though.

Her legs look lumpy and she's very stiff. Side views are hard and ladies have many curves. Shave off some pixels on the front of the leg in the back. Her breasts grew a whole lot between the front and the side views... try to slim them down. Actually, she seems a bit heavier on the side than front-on... Also put both sprites side by side and draw lines to match up the shoulders, waist, dress etc. I'd provide a paint-over if I wasn't at work right now.

Twentyfour posted a very helpful tutorial to help me improve my sprite and I think it might help you out as well.

No, not trying to pimp my thread, just thinking that such a nice tut can be passed along.  ;D

You have a nice start so far, she just needs some pretty-ing up.

EDIT:  Here's a very quick paintover to show what I mean about the breasts and the legs.

If you have trouble making a consistent side or back view, there's a simple yet effective method you could use. Take the view you're happy with, and draw some horizontal lines next to all the key spots of your sprite. Then carefully place the to-be-corrected sprite on the other side of the lines. Like this:
Then you'll see which areas need to be corrected (the forehead is too large, the bottom line of the nose should be moved one pixel up etc.)
And this is what I came up with:

The shadowing might still look a bit awkward and overall more could be done to make this sprite better, but it hopefully does look like the same woman in both views now.

You've got about three different threads for this one character (all slightly different I know), but I decided to post this in here because I don't see the need to have you jumping between three different threads for the same sprite.

To me, her face still really looks like a man's face. I think you could really benefit from sitting down and trying to make it more feminine before you go jumping into the side view.

I have done a quick edit that focuses only on the face - there is still much that could be done, but for a rough idea:

I've given her an expression here, but you may wish to consider a more neutral facial expression.

As for critique, the anatomy in both the front and side views seem a little awkward to me - her legs seem too wide in both, her breasts are enormous in the side view, and her back isn't curved in the way a human spine curves. Also the shoes are the sort of shoes that women who scare me wear ;).

Anyway, I hope this helps and good luck with your drawing :)

I love the shoe comment!  That is really funny haha :)

Thanks to everyone so much for the help with the images.  I will rework it and make another post when I am happier.

Thanks!

Bill

I like the front view. What bothers me is the side view. Kastchey's edit's cool but:
o -- Face with a really bright skin. In order too see it properly you'll have to place your character on a very dark background and even than it'll be hard to see it well.
o -- Her legs look very unnatural - angle and structure.
o -- Shoes in both views don't match and are deformed (well, this comes from the legs ;D).

Ben304, your edit of the face is very good, but it also gives her a couple of ages less ;) I'm not sure if poc301 want her to look so young. :)

A little work on the hands will definitely do her good. :)

If the highlights on her legs are supposed to be her knees, (not sure why they'd be lit up like that but whatever), then they're too low. In a dress like that you probably wouldn't be able to see them.
