Title: Working on a GUI
Post by: ThreeOhFour on Mon 28/05/2007 13:48:32
Hi guys,

Due to my wish to create a gui, I've created the following:

I've tried to make it sort of spaceship like. The colour scheme was inspired by a wing commander one. Because I haven't played that game for so many years, I highly doubt it actually resembles any wing commander colour schemes. But I kept it so far. Two different versions for comparison's sake.

Your comments and suggestions are very welcome, as they always are.

Thanks dudes!

That looks really cool.

Seems a shame that the "exit", "save" and "load" buttons aren't icons, like the rest of the buttons.

Top one looks better, BTW.

Looks great, Ben!
Very original, and distinctive!
The only thing that bothers me is the exit button. It's either not entirely straight, or the shading is slightly off.
In any case, though, good job!

i like the bottom one the best.

Ok, I've mucked around with it a bit.

-Hudders - glad you like, haven't used icons for the other buttons because I wanted to put some variety in there. Like a real spaceship. If they actually exist.

-Alliance - I think I've fixed what you mentioned. Let me know if not. Glad you're liking it anyway.

DrewCCU - Why is the bottom one better than the top one?

Also tried a recolour.

Can you guys tell me why each one is better when commenting, so I can try and incorporate the best parts of each one into a good one?

Thanks dudes

Something that I'm picky about: cursor hotspots.

With the exception of the pointer and possibly the talk bubble, I can't tell exactly where the hotspot is on these cursors.  I could guess that the hand icon's hotspot is at the tip of the middle finger and that the look cursor's hot spot is somewhere near the center of the magnifying part.  The foot is a total guess.

I like to know the exact pixel that I'm clicking on when I'm using a cursor.  It really annoys me if there's something I'm supposed to click on but I have to try three or four times just because I'm not sure exactly where I'm clicking.  This goes for inventory icon cursors too!

The third one down now has two exit buttons  ;D

What are those three circles on the right-hand side for?

Vince Twelve - I've tried a quick rework of the cursors. Is this a good fix, or a not good fix?

Hudders - Regarding the exti button - I'm an idiot. Regarding the 3 circles - I thought they'd be cool and aesthetic and stuff. Like they lead up to the about button.

Let me know what you dudes think.

Thanks all.

Personally, I would put "Save", "Load" and "Exit" in the three circles on the right, (as icons, obviously, otherwise they wouldn't fit).

I take it you're not having any kind of "Options" button?

I don't think there's any plan for an options button yet. The subject hasn't really come up.

I wanna keep the words for save load and exit buttons, so I can't really squish them into little buttons. I also think the little circles look cool when the background shows through.

Lemme know if I'm wrong.

What is your inventory screen going to look like?

Left-handed main character!

My favourite is the 3rd one, but I think you should clear up the buttons (the foot specifically) a bit.

I'd suggest putting the pointer of the walking cursor in the same place as the others. I'd also suggest having the pointer mouse-mode to be just the smaller arrow that is included in all the others.

Otherwise:
Fix up the foot a bit. The ankle looks a bit odd.
Put a hole in the middle of the magnifying glass.

The save/load buttons look messy.  I'd suggest using images for them instead, or a different interface like a CD tray or casette slot.

I like the second one it looks pretty sweet. You should put icons in the holes! :D

I would make the INV button a tab where that green thing is on the left-hand side, with the inventory screen as a pull-down that seems to come from behind the main GUI.

I tried to draw it to show you what I mean but I wasn't impressed enough with my efforts.

Thanks for the comments all.

Have done some changes:

I think I prefer the darker colour scheme as it contrasts nicely with the background style:

Still not sure with regards to the exit and save/load buttons. I don't really want to move them too much because it will leave a big empty space there...

I like the inventory window.

If you move the verb buttons along a bit, removing the save, exit and load buttons wouldn't create a gap.

Personally I don't see much of a problem with the text buttons for exit, load and save. Certainly if you want those options on your main gui, I think its justified to have them more 'spelt out' as they're system commands rather than in-game ones. I'm wondering about the foot icon - presumably you're making a space themed game, but that doesn't really say space-boot to me. What is your main character wearing, and should the icon be influenced by that?

In terms of holes in the interface, I think they do look good on the design, but I'm not so sure when they're above the background. It creates something of a focal point with the strong yellow, and that's not something you really want. You could try keeping the design, but making the holes indentations and have a look what that looks like.

One other thing I'd question is the colour of your cursors. They're quite a vibrant purple, and I'm not sure that fits with the the rest of the colours in the design, which don't seem as bright.

Well, those are just some suggestions. I think its looking really good

OneDollar - Main character can be found here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=31107.20).

A bit more tweaking:

Changed inventory buttons, filled in holes.

About the colour of the cursors - they used to be brighter. The characters are all really brightly coloured, and I think it makes everything stand out nicely from the background graphics - draws focus to what the player should be concentrating on.

I could be wrong but.

Let me know.

I also like the inventory window- very spiffy looking! However, if the game is paused when it pops up, I'd suggest making more slots available. If it's a big game, It'd be annoying to have to switch around with arrows (even more confusing if you can use one item on another) every time you pick up more than six inventory items.

Yeah, the boot does match up. It's all looking really good, way better than I would have time for/could do
