Title: Xarkh's surrealistic visions (partial nudity) UPDATED!
Post by: skw on Fri 07/10/2005 22:36:18
UPDATE #1:

Okay, thanks for the crits and suggestions. I ain't able to come up with all of them, due to fact I'm working on paper and with traditional artwork. I sidestepped the proportions purposely -- it's a surrealistic work so I can. ;)

Here's the completed work, finished with crayons and edited in -once again- CS2 (colour edit):

Ink, pencil & crayons + digital edit

ORIGINAL:

Hi, there is a piece of my art I did today. Cute mechanoid chick inspired (more or less) by the works of the well-known H. R. Giger (I don't wanna steal his ideas, but just practice my drawing skills). I have to do a few of that kind for a certain presentation (I'm thinking of graphic studies) and, to put it simple, I don't know whether it's good or not. So, all the graphic artists, what do you think?

Ink and pencil.

Secundo, I don't know how to call this work so I picked the default name: "Surrealistic Graphic No. 1". ;) Any ideas?

Oh, and the bonus picture which I did some time ago. An armour with a helmet and two oxygen tanks, I decided to call it "The Parasite". It was pretty messy and unclean so I edited it in Adobe CS2.

Thanks for your time,
Xarkh

Thanks. They're still incomplete, in a sketch form. If I'll finish I probably put them here again.
Pity, that I don't have the time for help or to make a game (you know -- school, exams etc.). Anyway, if you like "art" in that form, maybe I'll be able to send you some (I was speaking of the presentation one post before). PM me if you wanna talk about it.

The first one creeps me out too. You called her cute?  :o
The second kind of looks like.....nothing? You could post the complete version when your done, with colour and all, right now it looks, as you say...kind of messy.

If I had to pick it apart:

I think the first picture has some issues with proportion. The arms and torso seem off and the hips are nonexistant.

The shoulders are way to exaggerated to fit in with the rest of the body, and the upper arms (bicep area) are too short and formed oddly....

Not a bad pic though, keep it up.

this is the creepiest picture I've seen since I've seen the exorcist in the movie-theater...

well, I think it's good drawing work, and I couldn't do better, but the picture of the chick needs some cleaning up.

- At the fingernails of her right hand
- her hair thickness changes
- have you noticed that she doesn't wear any underwear? :P (not real C&C)
- change the proportions. I think smaller and less full breasts, would make her cute (in a sick way, that is ;) )
- do alittle work on her mouth, it should be rotated about 5 - 10 degrees
- adding a background, alienated... (matrix lookalike) would add to the atmosphere of the picture.

good job, hope I'm helpful with this, but as said before, I can't draw any better :P

Concerning the first drawing I agree to Squinky and Minimi. It's undoubtedly good work, but it's still improvable.
The second one on the other hand, seems really perfect to me. I love the shading and it doesn't look messy at all.

Keep up the good work.

Use Neole's quick upload service instead of Geocities, as the latter is very unreliable when it comes to high data transfer levels

Some mods:

Since it's monochrome, the ways you have available to define distance is pretty much limited to altering values.

Due to particles in the air, you will only have "pure" values right infront of you, and the further away you look, the more particles will come between you and the objects you're looking at, with the same effect as a fog. In practise, this means that if you're painting two black boxes, one close, the other 500 meters away, the distant box should be middle grey, not black, while the close one will have its "true" values.

I also modified the shading on her body. You avoided the pitfall of overlooking the main form and shading each feature seperately, and the main thing I did was to make the lit up areas more uniform. The contrast between the litup areas' values musn't compete with the contrast between the lit up and unlit areas. What I mean is that the areas that the lightsource hits will have similar values, which also goes for the the ones in shadow, and if you start mixing these up, by for instance, having the shadow values present in the lit up areas, the shading won't look convincing.

Last thing, don't forget bounced light.

You're definately improving, hope you keep posting so we can see your progress.

Thanks, Andail but Neole's FTP doesn't work correctly, I suppose. Files are probably uploaded, but I can't see them. :-\

Wow! Must say I love your edit, Loominous! It just looks perfect! Good job and once again thanks for the advices, I'll try them. A new, maybe better work soon.
