Title: Zapper
Post by: vict0r on Wed 10/05/2006 18:47:09
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/gnomemage.PNG)

Facts:

Name: Zapper

Place of birth: Gnomeregan, Azeroth

Class: Mage

Level: 11

Realm: Dragonmaw

(all of this will seem totally confusing to anyone who havent played or know something about World of Warcraft)

I created this sprite for the sprite jam, just with no shadings etc. So i started working some more on it and i felt i made it better. But i still feel that its incomplete! :-\ Anyone got a suggestion on how to improve?

You should definately add the goatie. And move his eyes a bit more "into" his head. They are quite deep in the ref pic.

Do you need this sprite for a game or practise or what? Are you going to make a WoW adventure game? That'd be very cool! :)

To justify this post:

What's with the chest area, it looks pumped up, but he isn't a bodybuilder, he's an old man.

He could benefit from a strategic expansion of his nostril landscape.

The giant schnozz is so much of the personality of the reference pic, I think.

I made the nose bigger, but maybe too round(too mario-ish)? Added the goatee, decreased his muscles in the chest area. Added some different shading on the knees and feet. Tried to make the eyes look like they are deeper into the head, but i cant make it look good.

Agreeing about the coolness of a wow-game, but thats not what i had in mind right now. I want to say that i only made it for practise, but people seem to ignore me even more when i say that. So i'll keep further... erm... information on the possibly upcoming game secret. Until people decide to help me :P

The face has too many colours, I counted 6 or so and you only need 3 for a sprite that small. The outline is over saturated. I'd use Lum. values for the shades at least around 20 or 30 more or less than the basic colour. also moving the eyes a pixel down and right and adding a darker outline would help. And you don't need the white for the eyes - it doesn't look too good. Also, hide his upper lip. the mustache looks fake now becouse it doesn't grow to the mouth.

Each color has a luminance or lightness value, ranging from 0 (black) to 255 (white).
Most gfx progs let you increase/decrease luminance in the color picker window.

Nothing major, just the face mainly. In a low res sprite you don't have room to allocate a pixel for everything, hence why I just used a dark splodge for the eyes.

-Removed outlines
-Redrew much of the face
-Added buttons
-Added small invicible details to the belt
-Ditto with the glass ball on the staff
-Removed small amounts of his hair
-Removed some colours from his face(i think)

I'm more satisfied with him now. Any more suggestions? He doesnt look too much like the ref pic anymore, but i were never planning on pixelcloning him anyway.

The reference image has very angular, pointed features, which the pixel version does not have.
It also might be an idea to put in the collar and cuffs from the ref. image.

I think he's starting to look really cool. I would add third shade to the hair color and use it to help make his awesome mustache stand out more from his awesome face. In general I think it might help to up the contrast on his head; it looks cool in the zoom but in the small one the details are a bit hard to make out. Maybe I've just made myself go blind from staring at tiny squares of colored light for too long.  :=

I'm really sorry :P I had forgot all about this thread.

Anyway, thanks for all kind words pslim! And i apologize for blinding you with my art! (that sentence made my day)

Here's a small edit: (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/gnomemageedit3.PNG)(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/gnomemageedit3.PNG)

I made the hair and the (quote) awesome mustache brighter. Howsit now?

It sure is better.

But I think the face outlines could sure use a lil' bit less saturated color. Like on Flibble's edit.

And... the right (his left) hand looks weird...
