Title: Zor's reusable thread: "This be a character's side view."(A few comments please)
Post by: Phemar on Sun 02/05/2004 08:59:52
Well, earlier in this topic I got some negative responses about my character's side view. So I did an edit:

Yes, that's it. Note there are alot of them. Mix and match the bodys and heads, then please tell me which one is the best, and  critisize them in anyway possible. Yes, that was ANYWAY possible. Hehe.

Well screw the wood, I need some crit on my latest of late backgrounds...yep, that's right, a background!

Right, there it is....Tear me apart for the shading, I don't care! You hear that? Hm? I DON'T CARE!
Oh wait, no actually I do...Yes I do alot...Sorry for the inconvenience....Haha, hehe...Damn I'm funny   :) :D ;D ;D ??? :( >:( :o

Well, I really need some tips on this wood:

Yeah, tell me what you think, I really need some C&C.

Does it look like wood, can it be improved? If so how so?

Paintovers: Definately welcome!

Yay, I did some animation:

Oooh, another one:

The first one is of my guy (called kevin) crouching down as he notices the police are coming through the window, it didn't take me that long to do it. Well yes it actually did. Well not really to animate, moreover to get his crouching pose right...

The second an animation that will display whenever kev gets an inventory item. That took me quite a while to get his arms in the right postion, and they still definately aren't. You might notice some jumping pixels on his shoulder...Those I have changed, just not uploaded...

So there you have it! My little wee animations, all up for critiscms....

Cheers![/s]

The animations themselves I like, despite the cross-eyed character. And his legs on the side view look REALLY wierd.

Hey! What's wrong with his legs?  >:(

;D Nay, I joke, they do look funny if you look at them long enough...ANy ideas how to improve?

BTW: Thanks for liking them...(that doesn't sound right, does it?)

It looks like his legs are going diagonally to the right whereas his torso and feet are going straight. I would suggest either making it so you can only see one of his legs (like you can his arms) or aligning the body with the legs (which would probably be much more time-consuming but would probably look better). Or you could add a diagonal view.

Hey

I'm with jock on this one, and three quarters view is much easier to draw.
I don't know why it is, but in the first anim, looks like a vampire.  The coat seems a bif iffy, too.
On the second one, his head seems to be too far back and possibly too high.

Hugs
Iqu

I do like them, tho.

Looking pretty good...
In the first animation, though, it looks like he's crouching behind a bush, like a bear in the proverbial woods.
His ankles should rise off the floor and his knees should spread apart slightly, and you should still be able to see all of his torso. His arms look a bit weird too, tucking under his legs like that.

Here's a quick sketch of my take of the final pose.

Left arm on the ground for support and right arm above leg for balance.
The legs aren't great but you get the idea I hope!

Cheers,
Steve

ohh, when the dude jumps to the ground. you could like have him dive to the ground, and land on his stomach. That would look soooooo cool, it would be hard to animate. but it would look 11337.

just my two cent

Osc: No.

Anyway, here's a new version, he is animated, just not in animed gif *more work*

I'm still working on his side view...(well actually I haven't started yet, but I better start soon...)

Hope you like!

I do like the character, but it's pose... It's like he's trying VERY hard to uh.. (how do I say this in an elegant way?) ...shit on the floor.  I mean, his face is turning red, see?  ;)

The side-view is excellent, though. I love it when a character has a great amount of animations. Details are important.

how about this ?

I mainly added some highlights/shadows to the cracks and grooves...well...I redid the colouring of the wood aswell....

I agree with kaaZ about the shadows/highlights on the grooves, but I think the original colouring fits a lot better into your style, based on the screenies on your site. I'd also say add grain to the horizontal planks, like kaaZ did, but have it run across them, rather than down.

Ok, here are the crits:
1.The top of the door is out of perspective it should be / instead of \.
2.Fix the black outlines
3.Add a light source (or more) then it will be easier to know the position of the shadows.
4.Add the wood texture
5.That's all

This is a very nice background, I like it a lot.

PS. Please use less smilies, they keep staring at me with their dotty little eyes.

Hehehe...that's the point...they are supposed to taunt you, haunt you in your sleep! Everytime you close your eyes I want then to be staring back at you, with their big, glaring eyes that say, over and over again: "Join us, old one, join us!" "one!!oneone!!!"

Maybe make the room a little darker, and the only lightsource would come from under the door. That'd be cool! :) ;) :D ;D >:( :( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-* :'(

AS i was going to say, this room is only showed throughout the ENTIRE game for only about 15 seconds...so I'm not too worried about it.

It is already pretty dark compared to my other BG's, and I don't think I intend on making it darker...

I'm not going to bring the wood texture back...I like it this way...

The door I might fix, as I already animated it...It would be hell to start over...

The lightsource is the door, as it opens within the first 2 seconds  of entering the room. All shadows are made according to that. I purposly made no light fixture...

So as I said I'm not too worried about this room....Thanks haddis and Damien...

So what you're saying is that you're not going to change anything.

Oh nay, of course I not say that...Just give me some time, I'll get there...
