Title: AGS 3D
Post by: Sledgy on Tue 30/08/2016 18:12:14
Offer to create - AGS Special Edition - AGS with 3D-engine

3D room editor. You can walk there like in a 3d-shooter and put there 3d objects in (3d modeles)

Easy 3d model editor - to fast create shapes of some guy and to put picture-skin in to it. Like Paint, but 3D-picture) with 3d-rotating (instead of mirror and flip)

With AGS script commands
With AGS design

There is many 3D engines for make 3D adventure games that you can work with them .AGS is retro 2D classic adventure engine and it's perfect now . We only need to fresh mobile and mac port for AGS at the moment .

I remember years ago, thinking that the AGS engine would eventually go 3D. All the 3D plugins back then, made me think it was something that people would push for.
Now though, such thoughts couldn't be further from the truth. Like Mehrdad has said, AGS is for classic 2D adventure games. Always has been, and most likely always will be.

That's not to say there's anything wrong with 3D adventure games. It's just that AGS was made with 2D adventure games in mind. Retrofitting it would be no easy task, and even then, it might not be the best fit.

I don't think AGS has to be retro.  I love seeing how AGSers have expanded its functionality beyond its original intended scope.

If it could handle 3D, I'd be interested in using that feature.

I think that would be awesome if something like that existed.

I can't see the downside of adding the possibility to the engine, maybe as a plug-in, so those that don't want/need can avoid the extra "download" (if it's significant enough)?
Anyway, good luck with the development! (nod)

I recommend to make special AGS version at eDuke32 Build style. Do you know this level editor? It has interesting 3D mode.

And it also uses sprites.

For what do we need AGS 3D? To make 3D adventure games. Like Dreamfall: The Longest Journey or Tomb Raider.

It may be possible to implement simple script API for drawing 3D scenes (something that I had in mind before, but this is not at all a priority), but real 3D as on your examples, with movement, interaction, collision, it will require practically writing a new engine inside AGS engine. And creating a new editor too.

Ofcourse there were plugins for that before, and it's quite possible to make a new one that deals with simple 3D scenes, but for full 3D game it must have lots of stuff and optimization, so has to be done by someone who knows what they are doing.

At this point it's far easier to use Unity 3D, or Godot, or other engine that supports 3D from start. Have you tried these engines?
Adding adventure elements to them will be faster and simplier than adding all the necessary 3D bits to AGS.
Heck it may be even possible to put custom AGS-like script there if you feel really attached to it (not a beginner task, but someone could do that).

EDIT: I also have a strong suspicion that you never actually read my answers. Like, you are posting these suggestions once in every 1-2 years, and I replied to you on similar topic several times on forums and in PMs (few years ago), and you never replied back... Not sure if you care about what I or other people say.

AGS + Unreal Engine = ? It will be Unreal Engine with AGS script and functions.

Honestly, I don't think this would be a good idea for AGS to transition too myself. I don't know many AGS users that would even utilize a full 3D world. However, a 2.5D version might not be so bad where you can use 3D Characters or place a few 3D Objects in the 2D Space. But a full 3D capable engine would just take away from what AGS is and would distract the developers from taking the necessary time to develop or enhance other parts of the engine.

I agree with Joseph DiPerla, I do a lot of 3D and yet have no interest in doing 3D adventure games (if I did, I would be using Unity or Godot). 2.5D would be good though, to cast realistic shadows and lights on the BGs, but that's about as much as I would like to go with it.

The mother of all necroposts.  8-0

Personally, I think there's already much better engines out there if you want to make a 3D adventure game. In my opinion, AGS is best suited for retro-looking pixel art adventure games, and so should be geared towards that. When it comes down to tools, it's better to do one thing really good, than half a dozen things only marginally decently.

Not going to happen without writing a 3D engine and editor from scratch, so will lock this thread.
