Post by: EchosofNezhyt on Thu 19/07/2012 11:50:39
Are there any programs similar to ags but for non-adventure game stuff?

I honestly have no idea. I checked it several years ago. All I remember is that it allows to create scripts by use of GUI: actions and conditions resembled by icons, that sort of stuff. I never did anything finished with it though.

Construct (http://www.scirra.com/) (no programming, free edition available)
Similar (it's sort of made for games like Longest Journey, Lost horizon etc. 3d characters on 2d backgrounds, free) Wintermute engine  (http://dead-code.org/home/)
Ethanon engine (http://www.asantee.net/ethanon/) for RPG with cool effects.
Go nuts: http://devmaster.net/devdb/engines

The games factory if you want to create platform games etc. no programming skills required. I used it a lot before. But you should go for the games factory 2 in that case...the first on e came out during the 486 era hehe.

There is also http://www.visionaire-studio.net which is the engine behind Zak McKracken 2. Its ok, but personally feel its a commercial rip off of AGS 2.72.

If you want to make almost any type of 2D game I suggest Game Maker, I made quite a few little games with it in just over a week.

and you don't post a link to it?! You are either very modest or the games are very crappy ;)

The games are just one level, still have a few bugs and you can't finish the level. :)

Here are some screen shots.

Top left is a Metroidvania type game, top right is a batman platformer, when you jump you can grapple and climb up the nearest ledge. And the bottom one is a SHMUPS game.

And here are two VERY bad games I made in just a few hours.

Game Maker 9 is shaping up to be a really sound development platform for 2D AND 3D stuff, so it's worth keeping an eye on.

I have also used Game Maker before and I can attest to its ease of use and flexibility with platformers, much like AGS is for adventures.

Oh how I wish you were modest ;)
But I'd like to try the batman game. I like jumping and running AND grappeling! And also the batman sprite looks cool :)

Don't forget that AGS is also capable of creating classic platformers, e.g. Indiana Rodent or this long forgotten thing:
Concurrence (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/Games.aspx/Detail/1428) is also a great example of non adventurous stuff in AGS.

I suppose most engines still won't provide everything you'll ever need. For example I think you still need to code your own path finding implementation in GameMaker (correct me if I'm wrong).

So, I'm very happy with AGS, but of course I'm not a professional.

Yes.AGS is really lovely.Only have problem in fps for platformer games specially in scrolling.

Well, there's a bug in my engine I never bothered to fix, since nobody seems to use it :) So it's possible to get a stable FPS rate if you look at Indiana Rodent for example. My current platform project is also able to run on a Atom CPU. But of course compared to classic jump'n runs like Sonic the Hedgehog, the performance is still pretty bad ;)

@abstauber
That was very cool work.I learned many things with that.why do you update it anymore? I'm sure there is a lot of people wants to make real platformer game with AGS and your engine is very nice for it.
please continue for updates and fix fps and etc...

I can vouch for Game Maker also.  I've found it ideal for making tower-defense games.
That said, in my opinion, nothing really quite compares to the knowledge base and level of activity of the AGS community.

look around in here: http://www.moddb.com/engines

massive list of engines. Some open-source, some proprietary, some 2D, some 3D, almost any engine you could really want.
