Title: 2DGamers Triannual Game Dev. Competition
Post by: rharpe on Wed 10/01/2007 04:18:23
Over at http://2dgamers.zapto.org , I am having a game design competition 3 times a year. This gives the designer 4 months to complete his/her entry. I feel this much time is necessary to make a good entry. If anyone here is interested in making a game and entering the competition, you are welcome to do so.

The rules are as follows:

Theme: True Love
Playing window size: [Full Screen or an option to do Full Screen] 640 x 480 (unlimited colors)
File size restriction: Less than 10MB
Levels or Rooms required: Must have at least 4
Teams: No teams! (Must be done by yourself... to keep things fair.)
Ripped Backgrounds: No
Ripped Sprites: No
Ripped Animation: No
Ripped Music: Yes (If you want to.)

Awarded to the Winner:
- Choice of how the next competition is setup on MAY 1st
- Added to the main page as a headline success story.
- And a surprise....  ;)

So get started everyone, you only have 4 months!!!

YES, you may use AGS or whatever type of language you like. The genre is up to you as well. (Platform, adventure, rpg, etc.)

Might want to rethink this rule with the 640x480 resolution you're requiring.

Hardly. It's quite feasible to make a high-res game in a few megabytes, as long as you don't use large bitmapped backgrounds. If you use either vector graphics or tiled backgrounds, you won't run into trouble. Alternatively, use a good compression algorithm. Okay, all this is somewhat tricky with AGS, but it's still possible. For instance, META (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=653) has twenty rooms in 800x600, and clocks in just below 10 Megs.

Yes, the 640 x 480 (viewable) area is a very controversial size. I can't change it because everyone that is entering and have started their projects are going by this restriction.

10MB was for e-mailing reasons. I probably should have set a 20MB file size limit, but I don't have a clue to how many entries I will be receiving. Many free e-mail services only allow 10MB attachments for bandwidth and storage reasons.

Again, as I said before, you may use whatever authoring/programming language you like.

Why don't you just get them to upload it somewhere, and have them email you the link?

That could work. Not sure how technically savvy everyone is though.

If one technically savvy enough to create a game, they can sure as heck email the link for it to someone else.
