Somebody posted a little bit ago about re-doing the demo ('cause they hated Roger :()
Well I have been of the opinion for some time that the demo should be re-done to showcase the full potential (and new stuff) of AGS.
Well that got me thinking ...
The AGS site seems a bit ... stale? I know CJ is busy busting his butt for us actually making the program and probably doesn't have time to re-do the website.
What does everybody think about a new look for the site?
I think it's time for a newer, more modern representation of AGS! So I thought I'd take a stab at it.
:: Darth Mandarb's AGS Website Mockup (http://www.twin-design.com/AGS) ::
My ideas:
- The top collage of games could be a bunch of different images and a different one is randomly picked every time the page loads. This would give a better feeling for the ammount of games, rather than just the same old (though GREAT!) 8 or so that have been there for EVER!
- the AGS made games on the side could also be randomly selected games so it's not always the same game(s) over there.
- Perhaps add a box (same as AGS made games) above the AGS made games for 'Game of the Month' feature.
Anybody else have any ideas?
I'd be happy to provide templates for all parts of the site (including CSS). I don't program in PHP (I use ColdFusion) but if I provide the templates it shouldn't be too hard to just drop the existing code into them.
If this has been suggested before and/or the AGS website is 'Untouchable' please forgive my impertinence! ;)

I thought I saw Terranrich post a version of the ags site a while ago....
But I do really like what you've done...
I'll give you $2 to make a site for me...heh
Looks really nice, but seriously, I don't think I've ever seen Blue Cup on any of the AGS homepages.
Come on guys...
PS I think the font for 'Adventure Game Studio' should be the same as the spash screen for roomedi... I mean, AGS. Simply because, in my dirty marketing mind, the brand is all confused. Integrated marketing communications and all that. Ah. AAH.
PSS All work and no play make Shawno go crazy.

make it a buck-fiddy ... and you've got a deal ;)
Anybody got the link to the TerranRich post/site? I'd like to see what he did!
Thats nice Darth. I really like it alot, it looks much better than the old version IMO. :)
I went back through all of terranriches posts (about 250 ot them) and couldn't find it....It felt weird though, kind like stalking Terran...yikes...
But maybe I'm just making up memorys here, but I thought he made one that was very similar to the current one, just with different colors...
And I'll be sending that buck-fiddy right away...

OOuh I would love to see a new design for the AGS site ;D
This makes me wonder. Does AGS have an official logo ? Ok, There is a bluecup at the start of AGSEdit, but... if somebody wants to add the logo on the box cover of his game, or if instead of just displaying "Made with Adventure Game Studio" during a game intro, the AGS Logo just fade in & out ? The logo could also be displayed on the website at the top of each page...
AGA made something with a capture of the bluecup we see everytime we run AGS, if I remember well... But I think there is no official bluecup.
In fact, Chris Jones showed us the original bluecup at Sweden. It was a violet glass actually... I suppose he was kidding. :-X

Wasn't that rodekill?
Anyway... I really love the new look!
So much more..... ooooh....
[pause]
How much do you charge doing a homepage template for teh Runestone Entertainment?
**edit**
I can see you.
Excellent, Darth!
But I too would like to see the blue cup more prominent.

I will use this in my game:

I did a mockup design of the site back when CJ was making this one where I used the bluecup and font + colours from the splash screen of winedit. Sadly I did a very poor job at it and did not convince CJ to follow the theme.
Edit: I like this design though, but I agree with Rode. Also, it feels very tiny on my resolution of 1280*1024.
Needs more blue . . . . and some throw pillows
I'm really hurt guys. Right moderator territory, wrong mod. It was I, Scummbuddy...
anyways, heres the link.

i like Darth Mandarb's one alot better, and one thing, DARTH! COME ON? Not EVEN a roger on the heading?
I know I might be the one who said I hate roger, but he IS an official part of AGS and therefore be on the header.
And not a blue cup in sight. REALLY?
Yes, it was Scumm, not me, but thanks for stalking me! It's nice to be appreciated once in a great, great while. :D
And yes, I LOVE Mandarb's version much better (sorry Scumm!) because it's very techie and hip and neat-looking. ANd clean, too. I think CJ should take a look at this and seriously consider letting someone else do the site. NOT that CJ is incompetent...not at ALL, it's just so that someone ELSE can have that load, and CJ can have less on his plate.
I say.........
If Chris is up for a new look to the site. Make it a competition. People could team up, do html, logos and the team could present their proposal. Big C could pick his favorite or let a panel of judges decide. That'd be all pretty exciting. However my opinion is that the old site fits AGS more. It's modest like CJ- it's not trying to be all techno fresh "Look at my fonts and graphics" like every other unimpressive site on the internet.
But to say the old one is more fitting doesn't change the fact that I do like this design. And I see cups.

The background of the About section has the blue cups! They're just faded into it ... take a second look! It's pretty subtle I guess.
I have a version that has Roger in it, it's just in another collage of games! I just posted this one 'cause I thought it looked better. But like I said, I would design this in such a way that the collage changes everytime you load the page(s) so you'd definately see good ol' Rog at some point ;)
I'm glad you all like it!
I'd be happy to design the site. But like I mentioned earlier, I don't program PHP, so unless he wants to move the site to a server that uses ColdFusion I could only provide the templates ... which I'd be more than willing to do!
I agree, Darths design is alot better imo than the current one. As terran said, its alot cleaner and nicer.
But i want to second Evens idea of having a competition for the design. This way we could have a few different designs to choose from as well as probably having higher quality designs, do to people competing for the best design.
Plus it seems Chris would dislike the pressure of "owing" anybody*. However, in a competition environment - Chris using the website would be its own reward to that individual.
*Maybe I'm wrong, but the guy has alot of people asking things from him.
Well ... I wouldn't want much. Just my name in the credits of AGS and 25% of all his paychecks.
I don't think it's too much to ask!?
Actually, I'd give him the website as payback. I feel like I owe him. I think we all do ;)
But I'm up for a competition! Sounds like fun!
Ahhh, this old chestnut emerges again ;)
Firstly, apologies to Scummbuddy for not putting his design up yet - he sent it to me a long time ago but I've never really had the time to convert it to html and get the site updated.
The reason I haven't been too bothered about the website is that it is functional and does the job, and it's not so ugly that people are repulsed just by looking at it.
But yes, both Scummbuddy and Darth's designs look much slicker and it probably is time for an update. The current design was unveiled for Christmas 2001, so it has been with us for over 2 years now. In fact, the list of games in the sidebar was last reviewed in January 2003 so even if nothing else, it should be updated to include more recent games.
The other thing to consider is these forums - Scummbuddy's design for the website brought it into line with the forums to give a common image. I liked that, and so whatever the outcome of this, it'd be great if the site design is simple enough that it can be applied to the forums too.
Since you guys seem to be up for a competition, that sounds like a good way to go about this. What if we started a new competition in the C&A forum with a deadline of say 3 weeks? How many people would be interested in entering something like that?

I tried to tie the two together a little. Make the title bar something that could be put up above. Also, I tried to use similar colors of blue.

Count me in! I'd be more than interested. Who starts it?

Well, since you started this thread you should be the one to start the C&A one :)
And I'll definitely give it a try.
It would be a cool addition if you could sort the games on their rating.
Darth - please go ahead and start the competition, if you don't mind. :)
JimmyShelter: that was discussed but rejected. However, the games page rating system is pending a revamp, this page (http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=10267) has the details.
I don't mind at all!
The New AGS Website Competition (http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=11389) has been started in the Competitions and Activities section.
Go there to enter!!
I look forward to seeing all the entries (and there will be many!!!)
