Title: A new car.
Post by: Calin Leafshade on Wed 11/11/2009 07:03:26
I hate to bring the forum down to the level of discussing cars but...

I've decided to sell my old car and get a different one but i cant choose.

Ive narrowed it down to a BMW 3 series or a VW Passat.

any thoughts?

That's an easy one: the BMW 3 series  :)

Pretty funny, as I'm also thinking of buying a car. And I too have narrowed it down to Passat and 3 series BMW.
For the Passat I'm thinking of a fifth generation one with 2.8 liter V6 and 4WD.
For the BMW I'm thinking of E36 model with 2.5 or 2.8 liter VANOS engine.
I think I'm tipping the scales for the BMW, because I think it would be more fun.

Unfortunately i'm only 23 with 0 no-claims bonus and thus if i tried to insure a 2.8 V6 they would laugh at me :p

I'm thinking I will probably get the Passat on account of the fact i get more for my money.

but the BMW is awfully tempting as the obviously better car.

late 90's Mini Cooper does me well ;)

Both of those will cost you a fair bit on petrol, but that's not always a problem. Passat is probably better for a run around, depends how far you plan on driving each day.

On a related note, I'm going to sell my Skoda.
Lately I've had my tires sliced, and a side window busted. Yesterday morning the battery was dead, so I was 40 mins late for work.
Some half a year ago the car was broken into and completely destroyed, leaving me with a 400â,¬ repair bill. Just months before that, several electronical components had burnt somehow, rendering the car motionless in the middle of a busy street. Around a year ago I had to change a ball joint and fix a lamp, etc etc.

All in all, just one big hassle. Going back to bicycle and buses now.

If you want a reliable car get a Toyota Corolla. I've had two of those (late 80's and early 90's) and the only problem they have is rust. They even are legendary being able to start up even on the coldest winter morning. ;D

Unless you're buying a new one, skip the BMW.

It's tempting car yeah, but not only to you. Used ones are usually raced and broken to strips and scrap metal, even if it's polished a bit before sale.

I wouldn't choose Passat though. Corolla sounds like a foolproof thing... or if it smells too much like senior citizen's car, pick a well-kept Audi instead.

Heh, I owned a Mercedes 230CE. I found it an awesome car, enjoyed it every minute driving.
This one looks like it, except for the weird wheels this one has:
