A Query?

Hi!

What should someone do if he/she has a question regarding the profile settings etc/ needs further help which has not been covered in any "rules" section/ Wants to complain about something. I mean is there something where AGSsers can give comments, suggestions & even complaints? Should they PM someone, if so whom? If something's not related exactly to the forum types (not even the general forum)
For eg: I have a few things I want to ask but didn't want to start a thread, but didn't know who to PM. I mean shouldn't there be something, "for suggestions, comments, queries & complaints click here".

Darth Mandarb

As for the PM you sent me earlier ...

The problem with your signature was the font which said, "and the fanatic muggle".

It was HUGE!!!  It's much better now.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Harry Potter fan (maybe even a fanatic muggle) but there are forum restrictions on the size of the signatures width / height; and yours was (on my screen at least) about three times the allowed height!  Hence, the PM I sent you.  These restrictions are printed directly above where you enter the signature information (they specifically mention images, but when using over-sized fonts it's essentially the same thing)

This is the General Discussion board ... and since you aren't sure if/who to PM you may as well ask your question(s) in here (now that you've started a thread!)

Hi ! I sent a PM to you. I'm not answering it here since its not appropriate to talk abt that here.Ã,  ;) Not to mention it being off-topic & I don't want yet another thread of mine locked by a mod coz' I goofed up. :-[

But that's just it! The forum is when u want a topic to be seen by every AGS member. But when I don't?... When I want it to be confidential? Forums have moderators & I can contact(PM) them if I've a problem withÃ,  a post. But there are some other issues in my mind related to the games page, the "user preferences" page, whom shd I contact abt them? And I wouldn't want it read by everyone.

Well yes, if you want to discuss about private matters related to a specific forum you can send a PM to the appropiate forum mod(s).
For more general stuff related to the AGS site, you may even send PM to Pumaman, who manage EVERYTHING here. However, for more general stuff like opinions/suggestions about the games page, etc. (well for "user preference" it's understandable that there're times you need private queries, for the games page, unless you're going to deal with personal stuff, like your own games' details or a missing passwords, etc.) I think there're aren't many reasons that you must keep the discussions secret, afterall it's not a good idea to bother a busy CJ unless really needed.

CJ's not busy, just lazy  ;)

Heck, I don't only demand that CJ solves all my scripting problems, I even go to his house and leave my laundry there every weekend.

Seriously though, I don't fancy being pm:ed with stuff that don't require 100% discretion, just because the poster feels a bit awkward for addressing a public audience.
If you have serious problems with how other members or moderators are treating you, then sure, we'll be happy to listen to you.

Pumaman

If you have questions/comments/suggestions, please do post them in a thread here in General Discussion. That way, other people can give their opinions as well and we can reach a decision as a community. It also means that if anyone else has a similar question in future they can look up your thread and find the answer.

If you have a complaint about another forum member's conduct, then in the first instance PM them and explain what the problem is.
If this doesn't work, feel free to PM a moderator or myself who can look into the matter further for you.

Wow! Great to see CJ himself replying to my post. ;D

What you say certainly has a point. But I was sort of worried that what I might have to say might seem mundane or waste of forum space by other members, or might be unique for me only so was hesitant to post in a forum.

Well here goes...

1) Firstly I'm facing a problem with the profile preferences page. There is an option to add a member in the block senders list. But when I add someone, the space remains blank. Also it might be that the person's name does get added in the block sender list but I can't see it. That way I can't unblock it if I want.

2) In the main profile page, (what anyone sees when they click on a member's profile) What if the member has a provision to display a brief summary about himself/herself. It can be anything, latest news or any such info.

3) It would really be nice to have a contact us/ Suggestions?/Comments? link in the forum page or in the main AGS pages like games/reources etc. For eg: I have seen a few duplicate game entries who to report to?

4) Many times abusive, irrelevant comments are posted on the "comment on this game page'. By both people who give abusive/negative criticizm on a game which is not at all to the point. But worse still, I've seen many members whose game received negative criticizm reply abusively to the critics like a "sore loser". One can't criticize any game without unleashing the wrath of the game author. Who to turn to when such a thing happens?

5) And shouldn't there be an option to "delete this post" by the person who posts a comment on a thread.

6) Should I PM you if I have a query regarding the profile settings option which I don't want to discuss here?

7)Will I be allowed to start a thread if I have something of a similar nature to say or will it be considered abuse of forum space?

Please don't be mad. I just love the AGS community soo much. I might have died of boredom by now if there had been no AGS.Ã,  :-*

Most of your suggestions have been discussed in the past, IIRC, and back then they were rejected.

Quote from: zooomer1990 on Wed 14/09/2005 05:48:00One can't criticize any game without unleashing the wrath of the game author.

Now that's narrow minded. Most of the people here accept the critic, and try to improve regarding to to.
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

True. But some can't accept criticizm the proper way and hit back at the critics. Even my game was criticized and of course I felt bad. But I accepted the words with a - what do you call it- pinch of salt. Because there really was truth in the critic's words however rough I found them. I didn't run after him with an axe. But a small minority does so. So, I hesitate before commenting on a game after I finish playing it if at all there was something I didn't like in it.

Funny... I haven't noticed any of that. I know that whatever proper crit I get I don't get upset by it, and therefore (diggin' my own grave, sort of) I'm not afraid to point out what I don't like in someone else's game, if it is worth pointing out.

Thats what the Website link is for, surely?

In that example, click on "Report to moderator" on the forum post, or post a message in gen Gen. But maybe the games database pages DO need a "report to moderator" link, although I think that would be the same as PMing CJ.

I presume you're talking about the Ignore list under Personal Message Options? I've never used it myself so I'm not sure if it works or not, but if you're having problems with the pop-up window have you tried just typing the name into the big box on the Ignorelist page?

Quote2) In the main profile page, (what anyone sees when they click on a member's profile) What if the member has a provision to display a brief summary about himself/herself. It can be anything, latest news or any such info.

That's a possibility, but between the personal text and the signature that really gives ample space for people to express themselves, I would think.

Quote3) It would really be nice to have a contact us/ Suggestions?/Comments? link in the forum page or in the main AGS pages like games/reources etc. For eg: I have seen a few duplicate game entries who to report to?

Good point, the games page could do with some sort of Report link. Well actually the games page could do with a bit of a rethink now, it's getting a bit unwieldy with the number of games that are on there.

Quote4) Many times abusive, irrelevant comments are posted on the "comment on this game page'. By both people who give abusive/negative criticizm on a game which is not at all to the point. The problem is that I haven't had time to make the Games Page Comments properly moderatable, so I have to manually edit the database to delete a comment. This means that unless the comment is really really offensive and out of line it's not worth the trouble to remove it. However, for future I would like to enable the games page moderators to remove any bad comments.

Quote5) And shouldn't there be an option to "delete this post" by the person who posts a comment on a thread.

You could originally, however we had a couple of incidents where two people were having a discussion and then one of them suddenly decided to delete all their posts, thus leaving the thread, and everyone's replies, looking silly. Therefore, you can no longer delete posts (you can edit to nothing to remove the content if you really want, though).

Quote6) Should I PM you if I have a query regarding the profile settings option which I don't want to discuss here?

You can do, yes.

Quote7)Will I be allowed to start a thread if I have something of a similar nature to say or will it be considered abuse of forum space?

You can always reply in this thread, there's usually some sort of recent community discussion thread you can add to.

I didn't use the popup window. I typed in the big box in the ignorelist page and clicked on the button "change profile" but after the page reloaded itself, the box remained blank. I think it might or might not have registered what I had typed. But in case it had(as I suspect) how do I reset it to default?

Sometimes something might seem irrelevant in signatures or too lengthy, but may seem ok in case of a comment. Is it not? :-\

Incidentally, I wonder why this post was locked & again unlocked. ??? ???

That's odd, I just tried it myself and it seemed to add someone's name fine and it was still there when I reloaded the page. I'm not sure what to suggest I'm afraid.

Yeah that's a fair point, I guess people just don't particularly want to write much about themselves in their profile. That's why people have websites, blogs and so on ;)

QuoteIncidentally, I wonder why this post was locked & again unlocked.

Probably accidentally, the Lock Topic button for moderators is very close to the link to return to the forum, I know I sometimes lock topics by accident because of it.

One thing to check for the Username bit is to make sure you've got it right.  The name displayed in forums doesn't always match the username.  For instance, if you wanted to ignore Pumaman, you'd have to ignore CJ as that's the username listed on his profile.

There shouldn't be any browser-related difficulty with this, but you might try an alternative if you're desperate to rid yourself of PM's by this person (e.g. using Internet Explorer if you're using Firefox, etc.).

I tested mine on Internet Explorer (PC), Firefox (PC), Safari (Mac) and Camino (Mac).  No problems every time.  I just input the user name (lower-case, incidentally), clicked change profile and it stayed (but with corrected capitalization).  Quite convenient as I was able to ignore Farlander on multiple OSes and browsers.

If it still doesn't work, you might try wishing.  It's always worth a shot.  I agree on the games database.  It's amazingly useful but easily abused and not easily fixed up.
