About soundfonts

Hello
I found some soundfonts that i wanted to improve my sound card's midi sounds.
I have SoundBlaster PCI 128.
Does anyone knows where should i put this soundfonts in order to be available to programs like Finale 2000?

Erm - sorry to tell you, but the SoundBlaster 128 doesn't support soundfonts. The first SoundBlaster to use soundfonts is, as far as I know, the SB Live! Series.

The only solution would be to import the soundfonts into a software sampler such as the EXS24 that comes with Emagic's Logic, but we're talking about some really expensive stuff here.

Does anybody know of any free solutions?

I think the old SB AWE series supported soundfonts as well. I had one but didn't use this feature.

For Linux, there's Timidity, a software synthesizer supporting soundfonts.
There's also a Windows port called twsynth.

Haven't used either, since I have a SB Live!.

Okay, I've heard people talk about them all the time, but I've never figured it out. What's a soundfont?

there is an 8mb midi sample patch for the SB128, it should be on your installation cd, or you can get it from soundblaster.com if you want to make midi sound a bit better...
you could use soundfonts if you were using something like FLStudio which has a soundfont player plugin, but it's not free...
also, a soundfont is like a sound sample, only it's lots of them in the one file that are triggered by different notes... just think of a font but instead of letters it has sounds.

Something last: Do new soundcards (such Creative Platinum) have midi that are high quality as the sounds of a synthesizer?

i doubt it, some professional soundcards may have, but some top of the line synths/workstations have excellent midi sounds.
i have a Yamaha CS2x which was produced in 1996 and i think the midi sounds better than on my Audigy 2ZS which is a fairly decent and recent soundcard.
if i ever get that Yamaha sw100g i've got my eye on (or any other professional soundcard) i'll let you know
although now that i come to think of it, those soundcards probably use high quality soundfonts...
