Who would be your personal adventure idols? Who are the adventure game creators who you look up to? Both professional and amatuer.
And would it be possible to design a competition where adventure game creating hopefuls could be encouaraged and eliminated in their attempts to become the next "Adventure Idol"?
Who would be your personal pick for the judges?
CJ is definately in there.... ummmm maybe!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And do you think you have what it takes?
ye gods kandyman!

Chille
Blimey, atleast spell it properly ¬

Two guys from Andromeda! Scott Murphy & Mark Grove have always been my adventure idols ;D
Quoteencouaraged and eliminated in their attempts
Sounds
almost like a contradiction, to me...
I do know what you're getting at, though, and I think the idea is kind of neat, but I don't think it would be very productive. There was plenty enough heat with the recent ATC, and that was teams working together WITHOUT elimination. Think what THAT extra dynamo would bring! :)
Current idols, however:
2ma2
Yahtzee
Dave (and Ron, since i forgot) Gilbert
Seems Zooty has a similar taste...
[EDIT] - Kinoko, too. Cirque WAS rather fabulous...
Now Ron Gilbert would make an excellant bitter judge... :D
Ron Gilbert is one of my idols.
2ma2.
Chrille.
Helm.
Yahtzee.
and since I saw Cirque de Zale, Kinoko.
C'mon this would be great. We round up three adventure game vetrans. One surly, one who loves everyone... one with either a personality problem, or the lack of personality that sits in the middle and is a little wishy washy. Then we audition hopeful game designers, decide who has what it takes to be the next "Adventure Idol", then set a monthly task for them and instead of a knock out maybe it could just be who gets teh best TOTAL points overal.... you decide...
a knock out could be good too.
but there should be three people in the final not 2.
But everyone would drop out during the first round and only two would be left by its end, anyway :P
...which will annoy me!
Dodgy topic man.
Do we really have to have compos to get people motivated?
Well its sad in that case cause as SSH said most will drop out anyway.
This will just give them a lower self image (in the creation sector) and they
will probably keep on dropping out in the future <prove me wrong> <I DARE you>
Some people are just not cut out to produce games as they always commit
their time to everything else.
As for copying stupid tv shows for creating games... nah not working.
Lets try Survivor.... GET THE POINT?
Maybe we should nominate the worst 10 n00bs and call it "Lame Academy" ;D
Vel could give a pimping masterclass
m0ds could lecture on how to finish a game
Fmarias.... I'm sorry that a sense of humour wasn't passed on to you at birth. Or that it wasn't at least beaten into you durring your fromative years by realatives, and teachers, carrying the holly sticks of wisdom.
The cooncept that has been described all the way down the page is one that is glistening with IRONY... you can go at look that word up later... and as such is not to be taken seriously.
Though you have raised on interesting point, I personally believe that competition is the true KILLER of creativity. But then i also believe that point to be fairly common knowledge. So hooryay give that boy a candy for pointing out the obvious.
And as for "copying stupid television shows" as you put it, I personally prefer the term SATIRE (you can look that one up later too), is one of the best ways for many people starting out to get a handle on a particular genre... and also a way for them to experiment and expand their own imaginative processes, and still having a specific predefined source material to fall back if they become lost, stuck, or with out direction.
PS. I like the survivor idea, but I pray we end up on different teams. Because I plan to pee in your watering hole. :D
Love and Hugs KANDYMAN
Oh.... also I volunteer to be Simon Cowell.... if we can't get Ron Gilbert.

Grove? Where did this Grove come from? Mark Crowe ;)
Mark Seibert was the only other Mark I know of - at least, that played a predominate role.
probably got Grove from our own MODS, Mark LoveGROVE
2ma2 and Yahtzee, for their amazing games obviously. But I've got a lot more idols on the forums for other things. M0ds for his movie and script writing skills. Trap for his musical talent. Phil Reed for his writing and comical styles. There are tons of other people too. Andail, Helm, Darth, Eric, DG, LGM, Remixor, Eggie. I'm sure there are more I can't think of.
Oh, and Al because he is teh sexieh. :-*
"Whaahahaahat about me, it isn't fair....."
(Australian Idol joke... only aussies will get that on)
(oh God i'm pathetic)

I personally believe that competition is the true KILLER of creativity.
I think this is a very silly thing to say, and is in fact the exact oposite of the truth.
put two people on a stage... tell them that we want a true original composition of beauty, intelligence, and art, they have 30 seconds... starting now. Oh and if the other guy beats you or is better then you are OUT.
there have been studies on children that have reaffirmed time and time again, that human beings CREATE better when they are not under stress... that they achieve better ART when not pressed, forced and compacted, and confined...
pressure is stifling to a creative heart.
THOUGH, having said this, I can concede that in something like engineering, or design, or mathematics YES pressure does sometimes help creativity.
It is due to what is doing the thinking, art from the heart does form well under pressure. But the sort that comes from the left side of the brain has been known to function better with drive.

Aaah now I know your were beaten senseless and probably find anything amusing :)

As for looking up words, you only need to when you dont know what they mean... And of being common knowledge
as far as creativity killing goes.. i think you should read my reply again ;) You will get it eventually...

Here I agree with you, people get started quit... most wont try again. Those who do will learn and grow.

I wouldnt have it any other way. ;)
Well let me add some value again...
Heres something we all can do. Everybody does their own art (of themeselves) How ever you want.
We submit it.. And we start a AGS game. Cj the main character is on a quest for the holy grail (the big blue cup)
I like it what do you think...
cheers.
who said that competition means being under pressure?
ALSO, all the renaissance artists worth remembering were competing with each other hidiously and it hardly stifled THEIR "creative hearts" did it?
Similarly Shakespeare will have been under constant, potentially heart stifling, pressure to produce crowd pleasers and he barely wrote a duff play in his life!
He did write a McDuff play however...
I wrote a script for a trailer to a action film called Macduff, the sequel to Macbeth.
Now I realise I should have made Banquo's ghost able to replicate itself. Oh well.
Hmmmmmmmmmm... How about this:
Ron Gilbert
Roberta Williams
Al Lowe
Gilbert Austin
Lorelei Shannon
and whoever made Lure Of The Temptress
AGSers:
Butcher
Chrille
Captain Mostly
Spyros
Phil Reed
and I probably forgot to mention someone, like usual
I've pretty picky about "Ags idols" , but here goes....
Mr.Colonossal: for inspirational art, tutorials and just being about the most creative person who works on a frequency I can understand.....I was greatly influenced by this person, and if he didn't have an active restraining order, I would still be living in his garage.....
Gilbot: Scripting knowledge and unearthly sprite ability.
Helm: Because he has always scared me, and he speaks his mind. (and kicks it in the art dept. also...)
GoldMund: because he is really johnny depp.....
Chris Cajones: Because he is really Doogie Howser, oh and then theres the whole ags thing...
Theres other people, but they either haven't been around enough for me to remember, or I just can't come up with silly ways to make fun of their names....
Idols, let see...top seven, in no order:
2ma2, for possibly being the most complete game creator, had he only been more active
LasNaranjas, for his political views
Unilin, for his humour
Helm, for being himself, and also for his sophistication
Goldmund, 'nuff said
Eric, for being funny, and also artistic
Mods, for being a great musician, a generally swell guy, and a great friend during the mittens
and many many others
