Title: AGS Awards: new administrator required
Post by: SSH on Mon 07/12/2009 23:59:02
As I have mentioned before, I'll be moving to China in January and so I won't have time to administer the AGS Awards this time. Volunteers? CJ's got scripts that handle all the voting, so you really just need to administer things, drum up people to vote and nominate, and do the announcements and ceremony.

I'd be willing to offer my services here but I'm not entirely clear what it is I'd need to do. When you say "administer things" and this "ceremony", could you elaborate? I've never really participated in voting or such because to be honest I don't play many games to begin with, much less enough AGS games to have a fair opinion on the matter. But I think administering the awards wouldn't really require that would it?

administer? Administrate surely.. you administer drugs..

Administrate is just a (somewhat clunky and unnecessary) synonym for administer, and both can be used interchangeably, though you'd rarely hear people use "administrate" outside of administrative contexts.

I would help out, but basically I'm too lazy.

Quote from: Dictionary.com - administer (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/administer)
ad⋅min⋅is⋅ter
/ædˈmɪnəstər/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [ad-min-uh-ster] Show IPA

–verb (used with object)
1.    to manage (affairs, a government, etc.); have executive charge of: to administer the law.
2.    to bring into use or operation: to administer justice; to administer last rites.
3.    to make application of; give: to administer medicine.
4.    to supervise the formal taking of (an oath or the like).
5.    Law. to manage or dispose of, as a decedent's estate by an executor or administrator or a trust estate by a trustee.

–verb (used without object)
6.    to contribute assistance; bring aid or supplies (usually fol. by to): to administer to the poor.
7.    to perform the duties of an administrator: She administers quite effectively.

Seems to me that definitions 1, 6, and 7 all make sense in the context that SSH used the word. :)

What about the whole nominations list bit? Does the voting system automatically retrieve that from the games database too? I'd be happy to help out if there's not too much possibility of me fucking up with game lists and vote numbers.

Well, usually there's some tiebreaks to decide in the nomination process,  so I kept back my casting vote for those sitations: e.g. if in one category two games both had 6 nominations for the last place in the final vote then I'd go for the one that I thought deserved it more in that category OR if I hadn't played them both, I'd go for the one that had least nominations in other categories to try and share the love around!

Since CJ did the new voting there's a lot less involved: mainly encouraging people to vote and typing up the results in the various places that the nominations and results need to go (e.g. The wiki and the forums) . CJ handled updating the games DB himself.

And deciding what to do for the ceremony is that last big thing. I can send the source of last year's awards game to the new person, if they want. If I can find it!

And the awards are held at the end of January, right? I'll be quite busy in the early part of January so I don't think I can take in on alone, but if somebody wants to co-host and help out with the practical stuff, I'm volunteering.

Pretty much all that needs doing at the beginning of January is an announcement telling peopel to nominate and how, and CJ does the rest, the wee diamond geezer he is.

One other thign I forgot is the committee for the special awards: Lifetime achievement and Best Innovation (assuming you want to keep these). I picked some suitable cross-section of people and invited those peopel to join the committee. CJ then set up the sekrit forum and there was a thread for each award and it was discussed until a consensus was reached.

You may also want a discussion on any change to the awards: new ones or getting rid of old ones. Personally, I think there should be a Best Former AGS Awards Administrator awards. DGMacphee and Pesty really deserve it ;)

If I do it, it would probably be as a stickam/vidcast sort of thing where we could show clips from the games, and those winners who are present and have a webcam could make an award speech in person. So it would be quite a bit of work to make it all come together technically. I don't know if I'm being overambitious, but I think it could be a fun new thing to do. Anyhoo, if you're interested in helping out with something like that, please let me know.

Edit: Before I make any promises, let me check up on something. I have a friend visiting the country sometime in January, and I need find out when exactly that will be and for how long.

That'd be: gold, silver, copper, onyx, jade, glass, wood, straw, EGA, and shadow.

Sorry, people, I had to stick my foot in it. =P

I'm in, if you handover the keys to the blog. Man, wouldn't this be the perfect oppurtunity, if I wasn't working, going to uni, having the MAGS, being part of two (possible three projects), having a life, had a girlfriend, almost hosted the Forego's..And having to administer 3 sites.

If I wasn't so busy working on other peoples' games I'd be willing to do this but right now I can't.  I'm sure your protege Dualnames will offer to do it in the next day or so.

Edit:
Oh wait, he already did! :)

Dualnames isn't my protege, he's my acolyte...  :=

I'll  leave it up to GG and DN to divide the responsibilities between themselves. As for the keys to the blog... you can post to it already, what more do you want?

Perhaps it wasn't obvious..on my previous post. It was mere sarcasm. I can't really host it.As said by poc301

Alright, so since Dualnames was just being a cocktease, is there anyone else who would like to share the responsibility of hosting the awards?

I wasn't being sarcastic with my earlier post.  ::)

Sorry, didn't mean to ignore your post, monkey. I just overlooked it in the middle of the whole discussion on the etymology of "administer". If you'd like to share the responsibility with someone, I'd still be up for it. But my January is a bit full, so I wouldn't mind at all if you take on the whole thing.

I was never a cocktease. I just said that IF I hadn't had to do all the things I'm involved in, I would really love to share the burden.

Dualnames: Alright, maybe SSH's cock is just very easily teased, you know, with him wearing a kilt and all  ;D

I'm afraid that I'll have to retract my offer to co-host the awards. As I said, I had to check up on some practical things before making any promises, and now it turns out that my best friend (who also happens to be my ex and who's been out of the country since September) is coming to visit in the last week of January. I'd really like to be able to hang out with her without any other obligations, so I don't even know if I would be available on the day of the awards at all. Sorry about that.

I'm still up for helping out with preparations, posting nomination and voting reminders etc.

I'd still just like more info on how it all works... ::) ...no, seriously. I still am unclear as to what precisely this all entails...

Since there was a grand total of 0.5 volunteers I've asked CJ to set up the nominations process as per last year and lets hope that something emerges over the next 3 weeks of nominations...
