AGS Steam Group?

Ahoy there, folks.

So, it's been a while since I was really all that active as a forum member - mostly because of my current job taking up most of my time, and being in the game industry, I sort of started to feel a lot less motivation to work on them in my spare time as well. What other free time I have is being spent either spending time with the SO, or playing games.

I have sunk a whole lot of time in Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead (Now L4D2) recently, but I'd have to say that the worst part of those games is the other players - There are a whole lot of asshats with microphones out there, and I've been thinking how nice it would be to be able to play together with some people that I like, and have gotten to know in some capacity other than just in the game I'm playing against them.

For that reason, I wanted to check if anyone has ever tossed out the idea of making a Steam group comprised of AGS forum members? It'd be great to be able to keep track of other AGS forum folk and play with/against some of you. I know that back in '05 there was some talk of a CS server, which is all well and good - so I know that some of you do play, but a semi-thorough search hasn't yielded any results on the forum of making a Steam Group, or people sharing their Steam IDs.

Anyone game?

Predictably, my username on Steam is SpacePirateCaine - anyone who would like to add me as a friend and play a friendly game of TF2, Killing Floor or L4D1 or 2, add me, send me a note. I'd love to shoot at ya for a while.

And if there are enough people interested (assuming there isn't one already), how about a Steam group/clan for AGS?

Sounds fun, I'm in.

Ben304 and me were talking about UT last night and i definately think there should be a mass UT game full of AGSers

Al_Ninio

There is a group of AGSers playing L4D & L4D2, I don't think there is any official group thing though.
We usually just arrange things in the IRC channel... anywho, my steam user is Al_Ninny, add me and I will gladly shoot zombies with any of you.

Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens

Unsurprisingly, my steam name is ProgZmax!  TF2 is a massive bore on wheels but I have l4d1 and 2 if anyone wants to de-zombie it.

Domino

I have Left 4 Dead 2 for my Xbox360. I haven't played it in a couple of weeks..Still putting in my hundreds of hours in Fallout 3 (Been playing this game since it came out in 2008). I did play some L4D2 online with people I didn't know, and thankfully didn't use my mic.

Can people on a 360 play with people on Steam? I am guessing no, but thought I would ask.

I started playing Left 4 Dead about a week ago, and I've noticed one thing. Not many people are good team players.  You always have the guys that are too slow and stay behind, or the two guys who run ahead while I save the poor bastard's ass who decided to pick daisies in the rear.

Also when the Tank comes around knocking people on their asses.  People usually stand still or dance around like fools, but almost always in arms reach of the Tank.  I actually just finished a game of L4D and finally I had a good team mate.  The Tank was chasing him around, I said on the mic "you run, I flank".  The guy ran in reverse while emptying his shotgun into the Tank while I did the same from the side and rear while following it.  It died quickly.

You also get those people who are completely oblivious to what is happening right next to them.  I've had tons of Hunters pounce on me while the teammates end up distracted or run away (which is usually why I play with the mic now since they sometimes never seem to notice).

I actually enjoy playing versus better.  It's much more of a challenge because you don't have just AI attacking you, it's also humans.  And I'm pretty good with the Hunter and Boomer.

With the hunter you try to pounce on the ones who have strayed away from the group, or while they are all under attack or have been vomited on by the Boomer (cause they won't see the attack silhouette on their teammates while the bile is on them).

And with the Boomer, I try to vomit on them whenever they first enter an area that has tons of zombies standing around or when someone has strayed from the group.  Also if I'm waiting for my bile meter to recharge, I sometimes just jump in front of their weapons fire to blow up all over them.

Anyway, not to sound like I believe I am this amazing player, but I notice that almost all the times that I die, the team never makes it to the safe zone.  I'm always protecting teammates, keeping an eye on them, healing them, picking them up, giving them pills.  It's a really easy game to play just as long as you remember to watch your teammates All the time.

Oh, and does Xbox360 connect to people using Steam?
If anyone from the AGS forums wants to add me, my 360 nick is: Unknown Quest

And no, 360 players cant play with steam players unfortunately. As rad as that would be.

...so no official group? I'm TF2, Day of defeat and L4d1 (and I agree with what Ryan said, but it's usually 50-50 chance of running into those annoyingly maverick or suicidal players) player myself. Am annoying on the mic sometimes, but you just insult me and I'll shut up.  ;D ID at the moment is centanian (for the hollidays), but usually just anian.

We've got a group now. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/adventuregamestudio
I'm ddq5 there and I'm mostly on L4D 1 and 2, TF2, as well as GMod and a buttload of other single-player games.

It's a crapshoot in any co-op game whether or not you'll get players of worth.  This is because:

1.  Some players are selfish pricks that should stick to single player fps's where THEY are the star.  This is a basic truth.

2.  Some players are new and just not very good yet.  For example, I had wrongly assumed that SpacePirateCaine had played Left 4 Dead 2 a lot and was surprised that he was dying and getting lost, but he'd only gotten the game that day and hadn't said anything.  Assumptions make asses of us all!

3.  Some players are not and never will be good.  This is another basic truth because some players just never really 'get it' and manage to work out a good way of doing things.

4.  Most really good players sadly form clans or groups of friends and play exclusively with them, regularly kicking non-friends out of their games.  Since I have less than zero interest in clans this aggravates issues and makes it more difficult to find good players.

I think that about sums it up.  One way to improve team work is to very lightly guide newer players toward good habits (bumping a player the moment a special nabs them is my #1 instruction) and bad players away from stupid/selfish habits (using up medkits when someone else needs them and you have plenty of health, etc) or getting rid of the bad players by voting them off, leaving, or just flat killing them.  I've done all three and have no regrets.

Leafshade and I agreed that DM Morpheus with the Instagib mutator is one of the most radtrumpet things one can experience.  :D

I wish I had fast internets  :'(

Chicky

As sad as this sounds i have to ask, does anyone play Modern Warfare 2 on the xbox?

I have like 2 active friends who play MW2 and they're both pants  :P

Calin Leafshade

I've joined the group.

Thus making me slightly more awesome than i was yesteday.

OneDollar

I'm in, though I suck at TF2 and don't own L4D 1 or 2.

But that's why TF2 is so awesome (besides the pretty good, relaxed crowd that plays it), even though you might be playing for the first time, you can still kill other people and be useful to the team. Sure, you get better with time,  but it's not like Halo or CounterS where you basically dead the moment you spawn and then you get mocked at.

Layabout

SpacePirateCaine, I play on many of the servers you do. At the moment, I am Retromaticon, but alot of the time i use a [Team Bro] Bro name handle, for our awesome pretend clan. I thought it was you, I was going to send you a PM some time about it. I'm pretty much limited to playing on aussie servers since any foreign server will give me pings of 200+. I only really play TF2 at the moment.

And Anian is so correct. Most people playing TF2 are only there to have fun and it's not Serious Business. Sure some idiots take is seriously, but they are usually laughed at and made fun of.
I am Jean-Pierre.

Arboris

Steam id: Arbz   (many variants of my nick were already taken oddly enough)

I own TF2 and l4d1 amongst other things (And ut99!) Never bought L4d2 because I wasn't all that impressed with the first one. BF2 is also a shooter I enjoy every now and then (on infantry only servers that is)
