I'm in college, and taking a speech class. One of my speeches needs visual aid, and I thought it might be fun to do something about AGS. Problem though: I need some direct sources, not just Internet info. I'm hoping this forum will work. So just a couple questions: When was AGS first released, and how many members are on the forums?

Atelier

4886 members, although only a minority of them are active.

Edit: I should say, scroll down on the main forum page and you'll find a gold mine of stats.

First rule of research: at least TRY looking it up in Wikipedia and google:

http://www.americangirlscouts.org/agswiki/AGS_Version_history

Not meaning to sound rude here, but that's exactly what I can't do. My speech teacher doesn't trust the internet for a reliable source, but he will if somebody says it. I'm hopeing that a forum will count.

Then your teacher is pretty freakin' dumb. I can understand not using the internet as a source if it is something interpretive but looking up a date, you aren't allowed to use the internet? And looking at factual forum information provided by the forum itself is not a reliable source? Like if the forum says (as it does on the main forum page at the bottom) "Total Members: 4892" -- that is not a credible source? The actual forum itself?

Clarify with your teacher that you didn't misunderstand what he meant when he said the internet was not a reliable source for ANY INFORMATION WHATSOEVER EVER. If in fact that is what he said and you didn't misunderstand him then tell him I called him an idiot.

Not meaning to sound rude, but you sound a bit illogical here. Isn't forum an internet? technically what is written on forums is same what written on wikipedia page.

....besides people tell lies live pretty as well they do it in the internet  ::)

I would also say the internet is more credible than word of mouth

Sounds like the teacher has been reading Wikipedia's own rules for citations!

If he doesn't accept any internet information whatsoever then you can't really do AGS as 99.99% of info on it is web-only. But actually, the AGS wikipedia page was threatened with deletion at one point and so as many real-world references were added as possible. If you look through the references on the wikipedia page you may find something more acceptable.

But your teacher is an idiot. What if your speech was on, say, Numa Numa. Try researching that without referencing the internet.

Funny how you'd rather accept word from random strangers than the engine itself. That's a bit daft rule. Seeing as how two people have already told you the total member amount here, both stating different numbers and both are wrong, while the engine keeps you up to date with the growing number all the time. I could quote a third number, but in the end, that wouldn't be the right answer either.

I think, what your teacher means is that you can't trust things like what you read here, things written by random people with no scientifical proof. But if you're talking about AGS in general, then AGS is the only reliable source, not the members at the forums. We have our fuckheads too, who'd gladly ruin your presentation :D The problem with people here is worse than wikipedia. You can't control us. But you can believe the forums engine and the website. They have absolutely no reason to lie to anyone :P

Well, for the release dates, if you don't trust Wikipedia or even the AGS Wiki, you can always open changes.doc in the docs folder of the AGS directory...

...unless you didn't even (dare) to install AGS, or you thought CJ was lying (if he was lying how could we provide even more accurate information?) or it's a strict human-human communication programme that you're not allowed to conduct any written sources (even reliable ones). :P

Anyway, you can always do a little research.
