i very much doubt there are any you can download for free or otherwise, but there is this site (which funnily enough should have showed up in your google results had you performed them correctly) which will do it http://www.translation-guide.com/free_online_translators.php?from=Japaneseo=English

Not that I know of.

Babelfish doesn't handle Japanese particularly well, nor does Google Translate.

If it was that easy to translate Japanese, everybody would be doing it, and I still wouldn't be waiting for the fan-translation of Policenauts.

Then you need a Japanese-to-English dictionary, which is different.

Here  (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Home-Education/ProLingo-English-Japanese-Dictionary.shtml) is a shareware one. And here (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Home-Education/Gozoku.shtml) is a freeware one.

Here (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Home-Education/Japanese-Before-You-Know-It-Lite.shtml) is a free flashcard-based Japanese learning tool.

Because of the nature of the two languages go can't really rely on automatic translators. You just can't program context and meaning into these programs.

I find this useful

http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/japanese.html

JWP is a Japanese word processor, but it is also good for systematically translating Japanese into English.
You can't type a whole string in and expect it to return the English equivalent, but you can go through it word by word and derive your own translation based on context and meaning.  The beauty of this is that you can put your own signiture style on your translations, rather than it just being a mechanical computer generated standard translation.

I love it... and if you are learning Japanese may I also recommend the Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kodansha-Kanji-Learners-Dictionary-Halpern/dp/4770028555/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213358428&sr=8-2)...  It is brilliant!

Start writing in Hiragana and Katakana now, if you haven't already... and follow it closely with Kanji.  There is little point in using the English alphabet unless you're only interested in speaking the language and not writing.

And if you just want romanji, to then translate to hiragana/katakana or whatever, you can always use http://www.freedict.com/onldict/jap.html

I used that to come up with my site's name ;)
