I downloaded the game, but there is no audio whatsoever. The intro audio cinema works and the game runs fine on XP. It's just that no audio can be heard. Anyone know how I could fix this?
If i am not mistaken, you might want to run it in DOSBox. I think that will fix your audio problems. It was awhile ago when i downloaded SS2.

shkpatch.exe does the trick- it solves all sound and video issues. Just do a google search. You may also want to install the rebirth patch, wich adds high-res models for most of the game's enemies.
OH YEAH! I got it to work! Runs perfectly with audio. Stupid me, I didn't run the underdogs installation. That was the problem why there was no audio. :P
Strangely, I can't get the patch to work because a window pops up says:
Cannot determine the installation directory.
Ensure the game is installed properly and try again.
How do I get the patch on? I believe it's already installed but this message says otherwise. Oh well, if I ca't figure a way to it, then I'll just play it as is. ;D

Can't help you much with the HOTU installation I fear, I still got the original disc for that. Maybe a clean reinstall will help you? Or- if you already got the sound, well, just play the game. You're in for some superb gameplay experience, if you never played it before!
The patch does fix a problem quite late in the game where one window is unbreakable where it shouldn't be, but you can *cheat* your way around it.
Don't forget to play BIOSHOCK also...one of the best games ever made.

I totally agree with you Domino, it was as good / or even better than Gears of War (I spent many many months playing that one; multiplayer)
System Shock 1 and 2 are among the greatest games ever made. The ghosts on Von Braun scared the hell out of me.

I would have been more scared if they hadn't been that stiff and if the voice-acting had been half as good as SS1.
As it is, SS1 still rates much higher for me than SS2. But still an intense experience!

Can't remember what I had, I played it and uninstalled it quite awhile ago.
I did have the other cutscenes, as far as I remember. Just not the last one. An issue which seems to be common.
Ah, it has a cutscene named "Credits". I gotta check out if there is video on it. I;ll see a small snippet of it if there is video. Don't want to spoil it completely. Wait... no, just some pics of the designers dead. Ummm. I did see another that shows a face of the box cover and it appears like this face is screaming and shuts off (only saw a small part of it). Don't know if that's the end or whatever.
Well, I best get playing it then and see for myself.

Nope. I did the last thing I had to do and then the game just switched off.
But relax. I didn't even get credits. If you have them, you should be fine. Maybe it was some other problem.
If all else fails, AFTER completing the game, you can still always look for the cutscene somewhere on the net.

I find this and the coloring ball thread strangely coincidental since I just played System Shock 1 and 2 for the first time over the past few weeks.
I just downloaded the game, but won't run really. I did the HOTU installation, and there is sound, but only on the first menu. When I try to watch the intro, or credits, or play the game, it closes...
Just in case: any ideas?

They play just fine under XP service pack 2, but if I remember correctly, I had to install a new codec or something. Or maybe I had to download all new versions of these movies. Can't remember. It's been a while since I actually played the game.

Sorry to hear you have problems running the cutscenes. I can't really offer much help since am not to good with all the technical PC tech. All I can tell you is that I have a Dell Dimension 2600 with XP.
On another note, I just got done playing after a little over the 2 hour mark (I like how it tracks you play time). The game is awesome though! ;D

I just recently re-installed SS2 as well. I load it up and the menu works, the intro works, but then the game crashes. Which really really really sucks. I've googled about the place but haven't managed to find a good solution. Any help?

No no, I didn't finsih it in 2 hours, I have only played over 2 hours, but today I play more and tomorro from my day off work too. ;D
How long is this game anyways?
More importantly, I got SS1 downloaded, but I can't run it. There's no Underdogs installation. I'll try to figure it out... if I can.
SS2 isn't too long, and can well be finished in about 10 hours (easy setting). If you take some care though, and try to make the most of sneaking, and play at the recommended "normal" setting, I'd say 18 hours.
It will probably last me more than 18, since I tend to to read all the item descriptions.
I admit though, it's a hard game on normal. I died like 5 times so far. I hate those cameras and robot turrents.
Flesh - who cares about dying once you find the regen booths. ;D Anyway SS2 is best on Easy if you're an average adventure gamer. Don't worry, it'll get harder later on.
Come to think of it, can't remember the setting I first used. Probably easy.
SS1 might need Dosbox or VDMSound. I reccommend DosBox. It's easy enough to install, so I assume that's not the problem? AFAIRecall, the file you downloaded will act as a CD - meaning, once you extract it into a directory, that directory will behave as the CD, and you'll have to install te actual game elsewhere. You might want to burn it, really.
Neither System Shock or System Shock 2 are abandonware.
However, this port of System Shock (http://www.reloaded.org/download/System-Shock-Portable/369/) occupies a murky gray area, and is classed as abandonware. Oddly enough.

Let's say the game is much easier if you got a good hacking skill (4 as soon as possible). Maintenance and standard weapons are also nice to have. You may want to get the special "camera hack" perk from the first OS upgrade machine you find too. And, since we're at it, do not waste any modules on alien weapons / energy weapons at all, they are really not worth it. Ammo is scarce, and the only benefit is that they hardly ever wear down.
Alright.... so I'll start the game, menu works fine, intro plays fine, game loads fine... then it'll crash... sometimes. Other times it'll work, only to crash a bit later. I've installed the XP patch and stuff, but this really sucks, i want it to work.
