Grim

Slasher, Gribbler, Nikolas - thanks for your help. It's good to know that the general consensus is that the key would be okay (even if there's a 50:50 chance it wouldn't, it's still enough for an adventure game puzzle to make sense, right?;))

Ghost - thanks for going the extra mile and asking an expert! I am now fully reassured that I can safely go ahead with this scenario. And the other thing you mention about not being able to pick it up straight away... that's even better! What a great opportunity for another puzzle!;)

frenzykitty - nope, it's the same key in the same cat;) Just getting it out is different.

The 2nd riddle:
and my translation:
QuoteYou 're low of cash and goes to the casino. After playing you were able to double your money.
Then you buy a drink for 16 euro. You keep on playing and double your money again.
You begrudge a drink for 16 euro again. The residue could you double by playing again.
You buy a drink for 16 euro again. Then you go entirely skint out of the casino.
How much money you has owned when you are going in the casino the first time?

Let's do one at a time. I'll go for the second one:

"You're low on cash as you enter a casino. Playing the first round you're able to double your money. You buy a drink for 16 â,¬.
You keep on playing and double your money again. You treat yourself to another 16 â,¬ drink.
You manage to double your remaining money by playing one final round. Naturally, you reward yourself with one last drink for 16 â,¬.
You're broke as you leave the casino.

How much money did you have upon entering (the casino)?"

It might be better to contract the riddle by simply stating that drinks cost 16 â,¬ each.

As far as I know, there's no translation software out there where an automatically generated translation wouldn't need any revision afterwards.
Certainly not with freeware programs at least.
Personally, I wouldn't use any of those as they tend to complicate matters rather than simplifying anything.
Some of the guys around here are professional translators. They might know a program or two, though not at bargain price rate I assume.

Thanks for your reply!
It will help me a lot! ;-D
Sorry, for my bad english...

Khris

I know you're just translating this, but there's a problem with the first puzzle: since it's about finding the cross sum, the result is always 20, no matter how the digits are arranged... ;)

Gurkenbier

I think the author would like to tangle us up with unnecessary depictions ;)

Anybody know how to buy a single shoe? I found a brand new converse and would legit wear it if I knew how to find a partner for it.

Any spreadsheet experts here?
I'm making a table whose data relies on references to cells in another sheet.  The table looks great, that is until I try to sort the rows based on the values of one column. It seems data doesn't like to be resorted when it contains cell references. Why not? And is there a workaround?  Thanks

Billbis

You'll have to break the references. :embarrassed:
Copy -> special paste -> values only, then sort.

Stupot

Ahh okay. So there's no way of doing it with the references intact?  I guess that's not toooo much hassle.  I'll just have to keep one unordered version of the table with the references and then manually maintain an ordered referenceless table next to it or something. Thanks Billbis.

selmiak

is spreadsheet open source? If yes you could try to hack this feature in, other people will like this too ;)

Stupot

It's Google Docs, hehe. Not sure if I can hack them. There must be a jolly good reason why it doesn't work otherwise they will surely have implemented it (it also doesn't work in Excel). I mean all I want to do is make a football-style league table that updates the order when you enter new data onto the other sheet.  Anyway, it's not really a problem.

You'll see what I'm talking about in a little while ;)

A couple of questions on my mind.
1)Has anyone ever remade Monkey Island in AGS?
2)Is my idea for a puzzle a good idea or is it a load of poo and wank?
1)Door is locked (Door in this case being one of those slidy down grille things in front of closed shops that are usually covered in grafitti.)
2)See fuse box. Harold (Demonic sidekick) suggests shorting it out some way.
3)Empty bottle lying about somewhere. Player should tell Harold to fill it with his urine. Harold doesn't need to urinate at the minute.
4)Suggests going to bar.
5)Get beer. Barman may or may not ask for favor (Haven't decided if the player should have money yet at this stage)
6)If you have the beer you can't take the glass outside.
7)Give beer to Harold. Harold drinks beer and needs to wee. Wees into empty bottle.
8)Poor beer onto fusebox. Door opens. cheers all around.

Is this a good idea? Can I refine or improve upon this in any way shape or form?

Babar

There are a couple of fan games created or being created (with ripped, similarly styled as well as original graphics), but no direct remake of Monkey Island, no. What would be the point?

I personally don't think it is a good puzzle. It seems tedious and there just as an obstacle to prolong the game.

Well what's the point in anything in life. We'll all die at some point.

Should I shorten it or just throw it out altogether? Because at the moment my game is severly lacking in the puzzle department.

Dying seems a good point!
But what I meant was that all the Monkey Islands work perfectly using ScummVM, and it'd be pretty hard for anyone to beat the quality of the music in the games, or the art in 2 and 3, or the humour. While it might serve as an interesting programming exercise (although again, ultimately pointless), there's no real reason to remake the Monkey Islands. Someone was working on a demake for MI3 in MI2 art style (which I definitely prefer), but again, they can't REALLY hit the same level of quality as the original MI2. I suppose someone could attempt to do a remake of 1 using the art style of 2, but that seems like an awful lot of effort for something that again, will probably never reach the same level of quality as what you're trying to emulate, and you won't ever really be able to call your own.

Perhaps you can shorten it. The main issue I had was that it seemed convoluted and there seemed a lot like something you'd have to be you to know how to do it (and there'd be easier ways to do it anyhow). Like why doesn't the player just pour the drink on to the fusebox? Or stick in the coin he was going to use to buy the drink? Or spit in it or something?

what happened to the mi3 demake anyways? I liked that idea and the art that was already made for that project.

That seems reasonable. I'll rethink it a wee bit and make it a less round about ride that ultimatly is just pouring piss on a fuse box to make it work.

Nikolas

So,

I'm preparing to publish a collection of 11 works for piano duet, aimed at a student - teacher pair. All is well, and the music is so nice and catchy this time that I decided to ask a writer to do fairytales based on the stories. And she did!

So, now, that I'm preparing the work to be published (printed) I have come to a small obstacle: For all texts, I use Palatino (ok, bliah, but it works for classical music), but in this case it seems highly innapropriate to use such a font. And need recomendations for fonts to use for fairytales.

Info:
Page size: 23,5x31 cm (Portrait)
Font size (if Time new Roman): 12
Size of stories: One page each
Example of titles: "Fifi on the moon", "The Duke and the cook", "The Pirates Biathlon", etc

My issues:
1. Which font?
2. Should I organize it in 2 collumns (which works so far, but again for classical music, prefaces, etc, not actual stories).

Any ideas?

CaptainD

I've been tending towards the Georgia font these days - quite similar to TNR but a bit bolder and wider.  For fairy tales you may also want to try Budoken SF - it's got a little more character and somehow a more child-friendly appearance, without being too outlandish.

For a one-page story I would definitely advise against doing it in 2 columns.

Anyway, just my personal view!
