Title: Attack of the Mutant Political Correctness!!!
Post by: PsychicHeart on Wed 04/04/2007 09:09:12
Okay, so, i came across  this site  (http://www.mavav.org) the other day, and I, as a gamer, felt damn offended.
Some of the interesting articles they had on offer included  Textspeak linked to violent games  (http://www.mavav.org/2007/01/09/textspeak_linked_to_violent_video_games_1.php) and  Burning Crusade goes Gold- Threat Level RED!!!  (http://www.mavav.org/2006/12/29/burning_crusade_gone_gold_threat_level_red_1.php).
Oh, and let's not forget some  worshipping of the almighty Jack Thompson!  (http://www.mavav.org/2007/01/04/jack_thompson_interview.php)
And, as per usual of sites such as this, it's all made almost viewable by badly-done Photoshop images that appear to be done by some sort of 3-year old.
Does anyone else dislike the media image of games?
Well, discussion/rant session open,
Cheers,
Flukezy.

Fluke there are zillions of things to be annoyed than browsing the web looking for anti-videogames... Why don't you use that energy to fight the baby seal killers or something?

If you're going to quote Jack Thompson, quote this (http://derekyu.com/games.html). Especially the story surrounding the proposal, game, and donation :)

do you honestly think that site is serious?

well it appears that people who play violent games appear to form distinguishable images in their minds. The others just form obscure blurs.

All this boils down to a basic uncritical and dogmatic viewpoint, and a lack of respect for or understanding of the scientific method. It's people who have already decided what to think about something, and don't bother to check if it seems probable. The anti-videogame stuff, any similar censorship-approaching stuff, the intelligent design debate... all of them are caused by the same basic problem. People don't seem to like just looking at the world, thinking about what they see, and drawing a reasonable conclusion.

In this particular instance, I think a lot of what was said in the discussions about music censorship (which is essentially what it was, although the proponents didn't use that term) in the late 80's in the U.S. applies here as well. An appropriate quote from Frank Zappa's testimony in a Maryland state senate hearing in 1986, as reproduced in "The Real Frank Zappa Book":

"'Disturbed' people can be set off on a 'disturbed' course of action by any kind of stimulus. If they are prone to being antisocial or schizophrenic or whatever, they can be set off by anything, including my tie, or your hair, or that chair over there. You can't point to the statistics concerning 'people doing strange things in the vicinity of rock music,' because all you've got to do is look around at all the normal kids who listen to it and live with it every day who do not commit suicide; they don't commit murder, and they grow up to be, in some cases, legislators."

Thanks God my mom doesn't know a word of English, otherwise I could only play Tetris.
Unfortunately, somebody translated for her sexisforfags.com and now I have to hide my condoms, damm!

Quote from: those SmacktardsFact: Publishers exploit cute, huggable and lovable franchises such as Pokemon and Splinter Cell, in hopes of hooking more potential gamers in today's youth. This is the same strategy practiced in the tobacco industry.

That quote, paired with that inane picture and the fact that the name sucks bug time, seals in my mind the idea that these guys aren't for real. Kind of like video games.

Is Splinter Cell really huggable, I mean sure it may look like he hugs people but he's actually breaking their necks quickly and silently.
:o

Yeah, mentioning Splinter Cell in the same sentence as Pokemon as an example of a "cute, huggable [sic] and lovable" franchise shows as well as anything that they're just not doing their homework.

Thought i'd tie up a few of their misconceptions
Quote from: MAVAV
'textspeak', an awful slang language spoken by a subculture of underground gamers and computer hackers.
Uh, i thought every PC user under the sun uses (at least occassionally) textspeak?
Quote from: MAVAV
clans and guilds, an underground video game phenomenon which closely resembles gangs
Yeah, my 1337 clan of night elves recently robbed a bank. WE ARE TEH HARDC0R3!!!

Indeed. They show such evil vile games as Animal Crossing, and Mario Galaxy. THE INSIDIOUSNESS OF IT ALL!!!

A large portion were argumentative rebuttals sent in by feral teenage gamers
I'm sorry, "feral" teenage gamers? I haven't felt this offended since Daikatana was released!

Though i enjoyed this article  (http://www.mavav.org/2002/12/30/everything_just_a_game_to_gamers.php) Good ol' Penny Arcade :).
Cheers,
Flukezy.

You're acting pretty feral right now, raging over this (most likely) satire website.

Well, he totally screwed me over. I have already e-mailed them posing as a sympathizer and asking for sources, but I guess that project went down the drain.

QuoteThe MAVAV hoax is a prime example of how easily information can be propagated on the Internet, as well as how easily consumers will take in that which they read, without first questioning it, sort of like Wikipedia.

This almost reads like a Philip K. Dick novel. So is this right or isn't it (note lack of references or citations)? What exactly is real here ... or anywhere? * trails off into metaphysical contemplation *

It's a tacit citation of Yoo's project writeup (see the external links). Not quite Wikipedia-kosher (it should be attributed), but I'm too lazy to fix it. The last words about Wikipedia are definitely a violation of guidelines, and have been deleted (not by me).

It seems the main side effect of playing too many video games is an increased level of gullibility...

For me it's probably the side effect of reading Frank Zappa's autobiography. I've come to expect no less than this from the American Christian right wing.
