No, you can't.  You need your picture to be hosted on the web.  If it's on your hard drive, no one has access to it.  Other sites allow you to do it that way because they upload your image to their site and host it from there.

You need a ?70x70 pixel image uploaded somewhere, then you refer to it by the web address, the "http://" you were talking about.

you need some server space where your image is stored. If you are able to put a pic on your own web site or someone elses, then you will be able to post an avatar image.

for example. i have an at homepage, and i can use my pic on my web site to use as my avatar.

Find some server space, upload your pic, and then use that link for you avatar.

hope that helps a little bit. good luck

It's has to be a 60X60 gif or jpg image btw.
You can't link directly from geocities unless you use a proxy.

I understand what you all are saying, what I need now is someone to break out the crayons, if ya know what I mean. Just gots to learn! thanks to everyone, and don't stop there with advice!!! Please, I will take the good, bad, ugly, wrong... better then what I started out with!G

just go to MS Paint, and go to attributes and make it 60 pixels by 60 pixels.  Then you can draw, or import a pic onto your new canvas. Once youre done, save that. Then find a place on the web to be a homepage for you, I suggest www.freewebs.com
sign up for the free service, and get your domain name
once you are in your editing of your site, that they directly take  you into, go to image manager on the left side of the screen, near site manager. click on that, and upload your picture from your harddrive to the site by the 'upload a picture' button. once you have, youll see that filename show up below where you pressed the upload button before, and alone with it a mark, signalling if you want to delete it. dont press that, but do click on the filename, and youll get a preview of the image. right click on the image, and go to properties, select its new internet address and copy (right click, copy). almost done. go to your profile and type in where the 'use personal avatar' check is and type in

[ img]http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/YOURSITE[ /img]
(take out the spaces in the brackets and img to make it work)
then save and yeah, bask in your forever avatar glowing at our faces. but dont make it too obscene, get it. ;)

Perhaps an easier way to get to grips with uploading a picture is to use this:
http://www.agsforums.com/games.php?action=submitpic

Just click "browse", find the file on your hard drive and then click "upload". It will then give you the "http://..." thing which you can paste into your profile.

I never realized you had an image uploader on the site.. how long has that been there, and is there a link in the profile edit that I was too stupid to see?

well, it may not be the most creative little thing but I did finally get the little @#%%*! avatar up and on, that's about how I feel right now! I'm not really sure if I used any one perticular method, sort of took bits and pieces of all and did what worked, that's a girl for ya! 8)Thanks!

The place i was keeping my pics that i want to use on this forum - www.illicitdev.net has been suspended, so i signed up on www.freewebs.com and uploaded my pics (and avatar).
Now i can't use my avatar.

Can't i link directly from freewebs?

Here's the image when i try to add it:

Here's the link:
http://www.freewebs.com/domagoj/forums/avatar.gif

When i click on it i get this message:Failure in submission of form. Session timeout.

Try to copy the link in explorer and it runs ok.

edit: forget it , i checked out www.freewebs.com, and found out that there is no hot linking, you have to pay for it.

That is why a few people have suggested you use anonymizer, which basically is a way to bypass hotlinking limitations.

Use this url instead:

http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/http://www.freewebs.com/domagoj/forums/avatar.gif (http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/http://www.freewebs.com/domagoj/forums/avatar.gif)

Which works just splendidly as you can see below

Okay, HotFlash over. ( and that is not ment to be a slam on anybodies Mom, but if you asked her, she would know what I'm saying. Or for that matter, the Hubz out there, just ask them!)       TA!     :-*  really, have a nice day! i know i'm going to regret this! G :o Just got my Fourty-Tude going on!
