Title: Back from wonderful time in Samothraki, Greece
Post by: MachineElf on Sat 06/09/2003 18:48:16
Hey guys!
Don't know if anybody really noticed me missing for two weeks but now I'm back from this year's probably best experience (sorry Mitteneers, but you're just second now...) - The Samothraki Sance Festival. Five nights (and more) of great psychedelic dance and world music, wonderful people (about 8000 of them!) and the best atmosphere ever. The site was on Samothraki, a pretty large island in the north east of Greece, not far from Turkey. There were long pebble beaches (is that what you call beaches with small rocks rather than sand?) to wash off the worst of mud in the salty mediterranean water and about 45 minute walk (climb rather...) from the festival were wonderful waterfalls in the mountains with fresh water pools (best water we ever drank in Greece).
The festival itself was 6 days of music 24h/day. Dancing with thousands of people in the sunset to great psychedelic music is one experience you don't easily beat.

Enough rambling. I just wanted to tell everybody how great time I had and that I really recommend everybody to some time try to visit a dance festival. Even if you're not into goa/trance etc the experience and the people is so great you should do it at least once in your lifetime (though you'll probably end up going to more once you've started). So, even if I probably won't attend Mittens next year I hope to meet you on some festival somewhere in the world! :)

Vargtass who? ;D

Ok... welcome back... If Sirthaki is what you like, you could have had a better time in Mittens just demanding Helm to dance for us... I really like to learn to dance like that, since one of my favourite beatles´ song has a movement of Sirthaki (Girl)...

Did you put on that strange greek huts to dance that Sirthaki?

He, not many would've notice. I usually don't do much of a fuzz around here. Will probably not be here much for a while though. School starts and I actually have a social life for a while ;)

Nacho: What is Sirthaki? A greek dance of some form? Don't think I saw much of it... Hehe. Not quite that kind of dancing going on out there. No funny hats either. Hmm, what's wrong with people in these days?

Chris: Hey, you've got a few nice festivals over there, but cheese? Hmm... Maybe it's something we should arrange. You recon it's any money in it?

hehe... I was kidding, using that Samothraki and Sirthaki are similar words. Sirthaki is that popular Greek dance (Whereas it may happen the same with all the popluar dances of the word, most of the greeks may don´t know how to dacne it... I don´t know even a step of "sevillanas"...)

Glad to hear you had a good time in Greece.

I've never been to Samothraki, or the fesival (since I'm not really a dance music fan) but the island must be great.

If you want that kind of partying all day stuff you could also visit Ios next time.

Oh...and it's Syrtaki. The kind of dance they have in the final sequence of Zorba the Greek.

Don't have a clue how to dance that thing! or anything for that matter...

Thanks for correcting my misspelling, and for refering that Film, Zorba the greek, I couldn´t just recall the name, but I remember the film and the wonderful performance by Anthony Quinn.

As I supposed, we have an example of a greek person who does not know even a movement of Syrtaki. Sure there are a lot of exemples of stereotypes that are false. For example, in Spain we are not all bullfighters nor we have that "mexican look"... It is very funny for me, should we start an thread about false stereotypes?
