Title: Bad Phrasing?
Post by: DazJ on Wed 09/07/2008 09:51:50
I know it's a very serious topic but I couldn't help but double-take when noticing the news headline on my AOL account this morning:

Surely they could of phrased it slightly different?

I walked past a police station the other day and I saw my photo on a poster that said "Wanted for Rape"... How did they even know I was looking for work?

I love things like this (bad phrasings, not rape)!

The swim-wear shop's sign that says, "our bikinis are simply the tops!"  I'd hang out in that shop all day long!

Way back in 1989, when Batman (the Michael Keaton one) was in theaters (and we had to look in the Entertainment section of the newspaper to get showtimes) there was an ad for Batman and below it there was an ad for Dead Poets Society.  The top of the DPS ad said "Robin in great!" which lined up perfectly with the bottom of the Batman ad ... so I went to see Batman expecting to see his trusty side-kick.  I was disappointed :)

Well you got your wish with Batman Forever and Batman & Robin lol, just a shame they were the most horrendous films ever made! ;)

Are you serious

Batman & Robin might be the most hilarious thing I've ever seen in my life

Well if you ever meet George Clooney in public you can ask him for your money back, he's promised to personally refund anyone who tells him that they saw it in a theatre (really)

Um, I don't know about you but I was in 6th or 7th grade when Batman Forever came out.   Your age says 27, lol, but yeah we didn't know any better.

Now I know to avoid all Joel Schumaker movies... and slap him in the face if I ever see him.   And I WILL take Clooney up on that offer.

Joel Schumacher movies are always hit and miss. On the one side there are the great ones: Falling Down, Phone Booth & Flatliners.

And then there are the horrible ones like 8mm, the Batman movies, Phantom of the Opera,....actually, I think he did more bad than good, but still, he's an interesting director because of the huge varying quality of his movies! :)

Eh, what was the topic again!?  ???

I hated Phonebooth.    I had never heard of Colin Farrel until I saw the world premiere of that movie.  And I learned to despise the guy.

Bad Schumacker films I accidentally saw:

The Number 23
The Phantom of the Opera
Phonebooth
8MM
Batman & Robin
Batman Forever

Decent ones:

The Lost Boys
Tigerland
The Client
A Time to Kill
Falling Down   (er, Now that I think about it.. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9J4D6BuKDFg&feature=related)

I'd never heard of his Mr. T movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085387/) so I need to find a copy and see if Joel found a way to ruin T.   At any rate, I find Uwe Boll to be a more inspirational filmmaker.   The world hates him and has told him to stop, but he says "Screw you! I'll keep making them anyway!"  He goes so far as to challenge his critics to boxing matches...  And it just fills my heart.

His movies ARE getting better... its just a shame so many people sat through what were basically his student films.

As far as Uwe Boll goes, I don't find "Criticize my movies, and I will punch you!" to be very inspirational.  But, I did find Bloodrayne to be surprisingly enjoyable - some of the fight scenes were legitimately entertaining, and a lot of the rest was so-bad-it's-good (like how Ben Kingsley basically sits in a chair the whole movie).

I would also like to go on record as the one person who liked 8MM.

And, in a vague attempt to somehow be on-topic: Hey, what's the deal with those 'Slow Children at Play' signs?  Self-esteem issues forthcoming.

Here's the sign I see on shop windows that frightens me:

Isn't that fucked up?     It looks like a child with an exposed ribcage.

oh, and Uwe inspires me because he keeps making movies in spite of his critics.   And they're so bad it shows you that anyone can direct films for a living.  Very inspiring.

I've been reading Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct and in it there are a lot of examples of these kind of Headline gaffs... Here are a few:

Squad Helps Dog Bite Victim
N. J. Judge to Rule on Nude Beach
Hershey Bars Protest
Reagan Wins on Budget, But More Lies Ahead.
Complaints About NBA Referees Growing Ugly
Drunk Gets Nine Months in Violin Case
Child's Stool Great for Use in Garden

This also made me laugh:
"One witness told the commissioners that she had seen sexual intercourse taking place between two parked cars in front of her house."

Theres a road sign near where I live that simply says "Blind People". I never quite took them up on their offer.

On a similar note ... why are there braille dots on the drive-up ATMs?

Also...

One time I saw a building on a busy main street that only had 5 or 6 parking places out front.  On the curb in front of the parking places was painted "Extra Parking in Rear of Building" ... however, if the extra parking was needed (IE the spots were all filled up) you'd not be able to read that message.  Brilliant.

Also ...

The road sign that says "Caution: Bridge Ices Before Road" ... I've always found that to be completely useless because 1) I don't know how long before the road the bridge ices and 2) I don't know when the road ices in the first place.  So that sign serves no helpful purpose.

On the trains here there's a sign on the door that says "Please close door if door does not close automatically." However if it didnt close you wouldn't see it.

Also in the bathrooms they have a sign telling us not to crap on the floor or rim of the toilet. Which it must have happened enough times for them to have had to make a sign about it.

In the toilets of the physics department of my old university we had instructions on the cubical doors that the toilet seats were for sitting on, not squatting on. Instructions and a lovely crossed out picture of what not to do.

In both buildings on either side of the highway in Kennebunk, Maine, there's a sign on the doors that say, "CAUTION: Automatic Doors".

Eh? You have to manually pull or push them open.

I don't remember seeing any handicap buttons to push...

My bank's got the same type of doors with the automatic-opening sign yet you've to push or pull it to open them. Every now and then though they ARE automatic, despite having push/pull handles. Odd.

A lady friend of mine is of home to get felt, laid, on her roof... oops, forget the commas...

Who can forget the classic epsiode of "Give us a Clue" when Lionel Blair pulled off 12 Angry Men in under two minutes?
