Here's a question that I have not been able to answer: Why do people start "What do you look like" threads when users could put their mugs as avatars?
I've been to multiple messageboards, and they all have the same: "what do you look like", "Post your face here", "Noobs introduction and pic", "The long overdue post your picture here..."
Why not just make a small 60x60 jpg file of your picture. If you are too lazy, send me your image via e-mail and I'll create one for you using the image you sent. This way we don't always have to post threads like the ones mentioned above.
Post your thoughts here. If you like the idea PM me and I'll send my e-mail, (if you don't want to make it yourself.)
Just an idea.
Maybe cause the Avatar and the logo underneath are there for different reasons. You for example have a guy with a sword, I have my son there. If I had a website about my game, or about me that would be there too.
the word "mugs" confused me for a second...I had no idea what you were talking about. Are you offering to make avatars out of peoples pictures? There are no "What you look like" threads that I remember here, but there is a "post your picture" thread. I don't see anyone anxious to know what the other looks like, though...
the Babaa rules forever! I shall not change it! :=

I can answer that pretty easily, actually.
However, due to the fact that the answer is so obvious, I can't be bothered to post it.
PS: If reading stupid questions like this ever made me so dumb, that I'm no longer able to crop pics on my own, could I send them to you? ::)
If people would want to put their pictures on their avatars, they probably would have done that already. Also those "Post your pic here" threads are a better choise because it's much nicer to look at people's pics in high resolution. The thing that confuses me is why are you suggesting things like this and still don't have your pic as avatar yourself. ;)

Actually, I'm looking for an image to crop and use. This is just an idea. (It may be a dumb one... but it is an idea.) :P
My avatar is my face... :(
But really, the reason people don't post their pictures as their avatars because 1. It's just too much work to go through that and put it into a tiny 60x60 and 2. because otis the supergoose and the hero from HQ/QFG are just that badass :D
There you go! Now you know who you're talking to. :)
I know many of you, (if not all of you,) hate the idea... oh well.
At least I did what I said I would do. ;D
I think the reason that people don't put their face as an avatar is because thats not how they want to represent themselves on the forum. I associate people on forum with what their avatar/sig looks like and that is easily remembered. I think it would be kinda boring if everyone had their face as an avatar.
Those threads that you mentioned serve their pupose fine. Often (always?) there isn't enough space to show an interesting picture of yourself or other stuff in a 60x60 picture that would go into the post your picture thread.
I've been through a couple of avatars, including having me but I've stuck with this one now because I like it. Besides, you wouldn't want to see (http://users.tpg.com.au/lukinso/Junk/eep.jpg) all the time would you? :P
Sweet afro....
I don't do it because, although I'm an asshole, I can be merciful.
On some forums I've used a picture of myself as an avatar, but I'm not sure have I ever done it here... Anyway, I have to go with the flow. the post your picture -thread is much better and cleaner than having everyones tiny pictures all around the board. As the avatar really isn't a "Put your picture here n00b!11!!" feature, rather it is an utility of choice for people to represent themselves.
And I need a better avatar. I don't like this one that much anymore.
I occasioanly have me as my avatar. But the idea about an avatar is it can be whatever you chose. So if people want to know what I look like there's probably some mittens photos floating around.
I'd like to see more animating arvatars...
...and maybe a better arvater myself... I mean, look. :=
What is that word you just said??? I like it. Screw "avatar..." Commie dictionary writing bastards don't have any say in how I say my words.
No, seriously. I'm not poking fun of you. "Arvater" and "Arvatars" are two pretty cool words...

Bleack, no! They're usually annoying.
As for my avatar, I probably won't ever have it as me. Because I don't want to.
I have myself as my arvater.
But I can't say I've seen anything of what Rharpe's describing, and I have no idea where he got that from.
You know... I am not being my avatar. But my avatar is me... You better check that grammar and stuff.
I would agree about the picture in the avatar thingy, if this forum was full of hot, sexy momicitas and not a bunch of programmer types....

I think there is no such thing as an annoying looping avatar.
Heh, I suggest that only the goodlooking people who cannot program, or do any script, like me should put their faces... Just to give this forum a good reputation :) only that.. I don't have no camera, so if you want to see me, then buy ne one (or visit the http://irc-galleria.net/view.php?nick=Stavrogin). (please don't :-[)
No, actually my avatar has always been much of what I am inside, not what I am outside. Well well aren't we deep today. Sugar mice, hoh. Just do what you think.. ok, Tuomas, out... peep
Whaddaya mean post your picture. This IS may picture. I'm a cross. Handsome one, too. ;D
well, i went and drew my face, painted it in photoshop, then added evil red eyes and sharp teeth with blood in it, and used that as my avatar. is that okay. does that count as a photo? it really does look like me, excpet for the eyes and teeth ofcourse. . . and the blood . . . sometimes . . . :o
Ok, ok, ok.... BAD IDEA! I get it already...
Hope you don't mind looking at my face for a bit while my avatar is me.

I do say sir, you look a tad bit like Bruce Lee himself.
*compliment*Quote from: auhsorBesides, you wouldn't want to see (http://users.tpg.com.au/lukinso/Junk/eep.jpg) all the time would you? :P
I don't have a problem with it. :D

No way! You would be confused to whether you were on the right forum. ;D

Animated avatars would be brutal to those that still use 56K connections. (Some people upload pretty large animations that take forever to load.)

I can't read the site, but you are a very nice looking old lady... there is nothing wrong with that image. ;D
Shame really. All you did Rharpe was trying to help... :(
Seriously though, Andail, I could never imagine that the picture on your avatar was not Bruce Lee!!!!! *compliment, as well* Amazing. Do you also work out and do push ups with your finger? ;D
I wan't to see more putting down rharpes idea... I don't think he gets it quite enough yet. Let's give him all the feedback we can.
And by the way, the guy next to me is my Grandmother ;)
I like hunchback stickman guy...
Hmm I like my cross avatar, I've had this for ages in every forum that I've been.
Plus, I don't think anyone would want to see this thing coupled with every useless post I make:
If I were to copy Andail, it might look something like this.
But I won't use it, because it screams "I'm just trying to look cool. Here are some *favourite paint program* filters."
Unlike Andail's avatar, which is genuinely cool.
And I would look like this:
But I look like some selfish bastard in that one. So I just keep stabbing CJ to the shoulder.
I don't have any valid reason to not post my face. I have pictures of me, good ones of my face too. I am just way to lazy...
(Now here's the purely useless reason I have, just to prove myself wrong)
I spend most of my time being homeschooled, making Goose Quest and lurking the forums, and my brother does all artwork for me. But he barely ever works on it, when working on 3d models and such. So I'm not working with The Gimp for 3 hours on something like that, when I have so many more important things to do.
Edit: Indeed, animating avatars are cool. But once again, too lazy.

c'mon, you can't tell me I'm that bad....okay....you can....especially since I'm too lazy to upload a picture of my sorry ass....
BTW: Animating avatars RULE! The Germ lives on!!!
Mine's gotta be annoying, but at least it's a picture of me.
Y'know, your avatar never really bothered me until you said it was annoying... ;)
Edit: It's insane. I just spend a half hour staring at it... :o
I could take a picture of my butt, I guess that would do as a face fair enough...?
would look something like this: (http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:HkIsI7Nfb40J:www.porkchops.com/images/Boneless%2520Pork%2520Butt%2520Roast%2520(Netted).jpg)
A pic of a face is good enough in the "real" world. This is a virtual place, though it deals with real people, and allows us extra means of identification. Surely the fact that Mrs. Brisby is my avvie tells you rather more about myself than just my picture. Not a lot more, but a bit.
Not to mention those 30-something reasons not to post your pic on the net. ;D

This one? (http://www.33reasons.com/) :P It's hilarious.
Reason 34:

(Or:
And I did (for a month or two, anyway) have myself as an avatar, but I prefer Kobras over there.
Yep.. just not a good idea:

Wow, by posting a dumb idea, I've spawned creativity! Imagine that! ;D
Incidentally, do people really call you Forest Gump?
I was thinking more Aphex Twin (http://www.geocities.com/whoismonkey/AGS/rharpdaddy.png), myself.
(Original (http://www.electroshot.com/aphex/daddy.jpg))
Yeah, quite a coinsidence. You both have the same perverted smile.Ã, :)
I am my avatar! Only less christmassy :(
