Title: Beard and long hair!
Post by: YOke on Mon 28/06/2004 12:16:46
Please help me get to the bottom of this phenomenon.
I've noticed an alarming number of people here going for the "beard and long hair" look. Me being one of them.
Just wondered if we could run a quick "hands-up" on who has beard and long hair.
Just to clarify; any facial hair except sideburns will count as beard and hair has to cover your neck. Is this a common trait in adventuregamers?

*raises hand*

But the beard is more a product of me being too lazy to shave :)

I have somewhat long hair, but I have to stay clean shaven as a requirement of my job. So I got one out of two, although my "long hair" couldn't be much longer than an inch or two, but that is long for me.

Yep, long hair and I'm growing my beard back as we speak.
I suspect it's a trait shared by many computer geeks, not exlusive to adventure gamers.

I'm a longhair, in fact a kid called me that yesterday. I'm also in the "it's not a beard I'm just too lazy industrious to shave" category.

As far as a common adventure gamer trait goes, my adventure-game-playing-girlfriend has long hair too. No beard though, so's you know.

I can't really grow a beard but I often try. I do have long hair though. Ideally I'd have both, like Guybrush in MI2, 'Let It Be' era McCartney, and Gandalf. All very cool people.

I sorta started growing a beard, like around my mouth (an extended goatee). School rules said I couldn't, and the lameass invigilator for the exam kept telling me to shave it off. I was leaving anyhow, so I was like "Expel me then, bitch!". But I shaved accidentially, so meh.. lame. I liked my xHoboCorex beard..

My hair is long..somewhat.  It was butchered recently, my school dean threatened me with a 5 day suspension if I didn't have it cut (no joke!).  So..its getting there now...the backs pretty short still, but the front I'm much more please with.

As for the beard, nope.  I do have my moustache coming back, though!  :D

The principal threatened you to have it cut? What an asshole! :-\

Interesting stuff. With this many people in such a short time, I do not hesitate to declare this an official phenomenon.

Strazer: I guess you are right about it being a computer geek thing. Maybe hair grows better when exposed to monitor radiation.  ???

I have heard many tales from other countries about rules of appearance, and I still find them hard to believe. Over here we have (almost) complete freedom to look the way we want at school. (peer pressure not included in statement) If a principal tries to expel someone from school for looking a certain way, he'll be called a facist by the papers the next day. Freedom through media prosecution.

Never with the long hair, but before the military I did have the beard... I'd shave it all sorts of ways... from the reverse goatee, to the whole amish beard thing... but now I'm in the army, and all I can have is sideburns that go "no lower than the bottom most part of the opening in the ear" (quote from the regulation)...

But I shall have it back, the ladies love it....

I cut my hair myself using the auto-clippers.Ã,  I cut it down to the lowest setting and always keep it short.Ã,  I can't stand long hair anymore!

Here's me in high-school (and this wasn't even the longest!):

Here's how I keep it now (and have for about the last 10 years!)

As for the beard ... it takes me about 2 weeks to grow out what you could call a true 'beard' but as I fall under the 'too lazy' category I usually go about 2 - 3 weeks without shaving before I can't stand the itchy-ness anymore.Ã,  Then I shave.

long hair... yes, sure (about down to the middle of my back)
beard... not too dense, but all over the face! (The beard is mainly there, because without it I'd look like my mother... Not that I have a feminine face, though :P)

Me be hairy troll!

Johnny: It isn't that hard to shave yourself by accident. One moment of carelessness, the clippers slip... and BANG! You have to remove all of it to not look like a dork.

Darth: I know how you feel. I was totally shaved, face and head, from 1998 to mid-2001. Last couple of years I went all the way with a razor. Almost a religious/ritualistic feeling to shave your head with a razor. At least for me it was. I keep myself entertained by constantly changing how I cut my beard. Theese last couple of months I have opted for some rad handlebars. ;)

BTW
Do any of you, my long haired friends, experience what I like to call hair-paranoia? You keep thinking that you see something moving in the corner of you eye, but then you realize it's just your hair?

Definitely.

There's a moment of: "Oh Lord, the demons of my past have finally caught up with me!"

Then you realise it's hair.

Oh god, yes. It's really bad for me. My hair is half way to my waist, and I get freaked out when I wear tank tops, because it almost feels like a bug crawling up my arms.

"AAAAHHH! WHAT THE HECK JUST TOUCHED ME???? Oh... hair again."

That happens to me a lot. Sometimes if it looks like just a loose hair (i.e. no longer connected to my head) I can sit there for a good few minutes staring straight at the buggar trying to pull it out but always missing by a couple of millimetres ;D

Man, I feel left out. But I've got myself a pretty good fo-hawk going. And I've been growing me a sole-patch. But I havent had long hair since pre-school. It was so long I had to get it cut short every 2 weeks. It would grow back like crazy.

I've long hair, around shoulder length (used to be quite longer, but then I decided to cut them). Depending on the mood, I leave a small beard every now and then, mostly then than now, though.

I hate tie-die.

Dragonrose: I get the feeling that I have bugs crawling on my arms all the time. Problem is that my hair doesn't reach that far...  :-\

I tried growing my hair long once, I got it down to my shoulders, but then I just cut it all off.  My hair is just too wavy for my liking.  I'd take a shower before bed, and I'd wake up with an afro. :(

As for the beard thing, I've had just about every style of beard you can think of.  I've had facial hair since I could grow it, and I haven't seen my chin in years.

I used to have long hair but I it never grew long enough so I had duck tails (when your hair curls at the end so as to stick out from the side of your neck). I got so annoyed with that, so I shaved my head. My face was so boring that I then started attempted growing a beard. Now my hair is coming back and I just discovered that Male pattern baldness is getting to me (my "forehead" takes up almost half my face), and at the age of 18 that is just scary.

I usually have short hair cause I can't really grow long hair, I've tried before but It ends up looking like Einstein.

I usually shave once a week, cause I'm lazy, and I just like the unshaven bogan look, I had a goatie for a few years, and then grew it every now and then, but I haven't for ages.

I grow a decent thick goatie and mow, but the sides still don't quite fill up yet, and I'm 28. but I don't have chest hair either, I guess I'm just not a hairy person.

This is me with my usual few days growth, I think I'm the one on the right.

Well, DragonRose and Pesty are allowed (but please shave your beards)

I prefer to use an unperfumed one. The less sh** in it, the better. Or just water. That gives a nice, grungey, look.

Edit: Oh, and what's wrong with Einstein. He's one of my hair-heroes!

I used to have exactly the same thing but I've never heard a name for them! My dad would never let me grow my hair past that length, so I was stuck with duck tails for years.

I have long hair.. It's not quite down to my shoulders, but it almost covers the back of my neck. I don't really have any control over how it looks. Sometimes it looks fucking sexy, and other times I look like a homeless person. I just got my college ID photo taken, and I look like a rapist in it :D

I'm not really particular about me shampoo.  I use everything from Herbal Essences to dandruff shampoo.

I have a beard and am growing out my hair right now.

One day (several months ago), I decided to just let my beard take over, instead of always fighting it. I'm very happy with the results. I don't shape it at all, but, whenever it gets too long, I'll trim it to a number 2 and let it grow out again. It's just as fun growing out the beard as it is having it ;)

Funny this post should resurface now. I am now down to just a beard. NO HAIR whatsoever. It reached all the way down to the floor, but by then it wasn't attached to me anymore. Before that it reached to my shoulders. Now I'm nice and bald. I love being bald! :)

I've been growing my hair for a while now... It's down to my shoulders. As for beard, I usually stay pretty clean shaven. Right now, I can only grow one of those creepy, under beards, you know the ones the grow all along the bottom of your chin? And when I do that, I look like some creepy, 17 year old (Instead of some geeky 17 year old).

...I'll stick with my long hair for now.
