Title: BEER!!!
Post by: Layabout on Sun 04/01/2004 07:09:32
I'd like to know what everyone's favourite beer is. If you don't like beer, then let us know what other alcoholic drink is your favourite. And if you don't drink, well that is your loss!

Cheers,

Pirate Jack.

Vodka and some sort of fruit juice is my favorite.

I don't typically drink beer, because beer in Oklahoma is a bit watered down because state law prohibits (normal) 6 pt. beer.. we have 3.2 pt.  It tastes gross, but out of them all I usually like Coors Light.

I usually drink until my walking skills are affected and then stop or signifcantly slow down, because I like to avoid the throwing up/getting sick part.

Why didn't you post your favorite? Isn't it a bit strange to ask everyone else and not say anything for yourself? I guess since you're a "pirate" I'll assume you like rum.

I've probably had less beer in the last year than every year since I was 16

I like mixing around with the beers I drink, I like most beers, even VB or Tooheys New, but I'm sick of them, I don't mind Carlton Draught or Extra Dry, but I prefer to drink Cascade Premium, or Boags. The odd Coopers is great too. The odd Toheeys Old aswell (a stout)

Hahn premium light, or Cascade premium light are good for light beers compared to most.

The above are all Australian beers, I don't drink many imported beers, but I do love Guinness & Kilkenny.

I don't really like drinking spirits,

but having shots of black sambuca can top off a good night.

I wouldn't mind experimenting with brewing my own beer this year.

Can't bloody stand beer.  I'm a coffee guy, so it's a little brandy or bailey's for me.  If I go non-coffee, I usually order a Long Island Iced Tea or a Jack & Coke.

Amen to YakSpit.

I detest beer. I guess it's an acquired taste, but it SMELLS gross, TASTES gross, and it gives heaps of people a beer gut.

I'm a coffee and bailey's man. But then again, I don't drink heaps of coffee (because my dad got addicted to it, and that put me off a bit), so I guess I'm not really a drinker.

I mean, I've never been drunk enough to throw up, or do something stupid. My body tells me when I'm about to drink 'one glass too many', so I stop then.

But hey, if you like fermented, yeasty, frothy crap, it's your life :D

(NOT ADVERTISING! IT SOUNDS LIKE A SALES PITCH, BUT IT AIN'T! - Understand?!!?!?!111!?!1///!/)

See... my girlfriend will not drink beer because she tells me it smells like pee and tastes like pee, and picks at me for being a beer drinker.  (How she knows what pee tastes like, I don't know...)

I'll admit.  I'm an all-American beer drinker.  I prefer Budweiser.  Not lite, I prefer the full flavor, kinda like my cigarettes.  You can't beat a cold Bud on a bad day.  It just goes down smooth and never disappoints (even though, no matter what kind of beer I drink, I've always got rotgut in the morning).

I will drink anything available such as Coors, or Busch Lite, as Bud is kind of expensive out by me... but if it's available for me to drink without cost, Budweiser is my beer.

The nastiest beer I have ever had has got to be, hands down, any Miller product.

And to anyone who tries to make me stick my foot in my mouth by telling me that Bud is brewed in somewhere, like Europe or something:  you suck.   ;)

But then again... I love beer, and I will try any beer at least ONCE... I've never tried Foster's, but I will come to Aussie just to try it.  (...only a joke, don't flame me Naranjas, or Timmie!)

If you don't like beer, I recommend a screwdriver (vodka & O.J., mixed the CORRECT way).

I hear there's a beer to honor the California governor? The "Governator".
Is this tha troof?

Anyways. I drink anything that moves... or actually not. I drink everything that's LIQUID. That includes liquour, spirits, coca-cola and beer. I have drunk piss on two occasions, it was not of free will... I think.

I won't flame you for the Foster's joke.....but Budweiser?!?!?

Budweiser?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

But I digress. [although I can understand people being put off beer if Bud was the most common beer around].

Now Guinness....that's like drinking Bach. The most gorgeous of all beers [taking into account I've only tried perhaps 2 1/2 dozen brands and all my homebrewing experiments]

Isn't Bud the most common beer?  It is here (just for the sake of arguement).  When I was in high school, we had some German foreign exchange students come to our school for about a month, and we introduced them to Bud, and they said it was weak.  I can understand that, I guess... seeing as Germans drink beer like water.  Hell, they even have beer machines on the streets instead of pop machines!... and I forgot where I was going with this...

Guinness... we have that here.  Are you recommending that I try it?

Post by: Las Naranjas on Sun 04/01/2004 11:22:18
I think that's why Bud is so widespread, it's like McDonalds. You try to avoid offending different tastes as to get a bigger market, by removing taste.

That said it still tastes awful, even worse than VB and New.

And I do recommend Guinness, which also has a huge distribution globally, despite being good [Kilkenny is equally good but sometimes harder to find].

But you need balls to drink it, but if you don't, it'll give you some.

A German guy asked me a few weeks ago to recommend a "good Australian beer" and he couldn't understand why I laughed so much. I eventually got him to buy an Old, since it was the least offensive beer there.
The strength behing German brewing is an old law that bars the addition of anything but Barley, Hops and water [that's right, you technically can't add yeast. That's means they use yeast from the former brew, which means they have yeast strains that are the result of hundreds of years of breeding, just like fine wines are made from great grape strains]. That prevents the preservatives and brew-fasters that make industrial pseduo pilseners like Bud such an attractive commercial prospect to massive breweries in the rest of the world.

When I'm at a pub or something, I usually drink Guinness if it's on tap, or otherwise usually carlton, or VB.
If I'm just at a party I drink spirits, usually scotch, but more recently i've been drinking gin a fair bit.

Then again, I'll drink anything if it's moderately cheap... =)

I have never been able to have more than a sip of beer.  Yuck yuck yuck. In fact, I've never had much luck with anything alcoholic. I end up being the anoying sober friend who takes your picture in a compromising pose after you've passed out. But I do like Mead.  Fermented honey, water and fruit.  Tasty tasty tasty. But mead is hard to come by, so I stay sober.

Yeh, I don't like beer either. I prefer drinks that are pleasing to my sense of taste. If anything needs to tap directly into your brain and alter your perception just for you to enjoy it, I don't think it's worth it. Could I sell a big steaming jar of cat vomit if it gave people enough of a buzz?

My kind of topic!

I drink Oranjeboom (Dutch) most often. Hertog Jan (Dutch) at home. If possible I like Stella Artois (Belgian).

The best beer I ever drank was either Pilsner Urquell or Gambrinus (botch Czech), can't decide.

Brand (Dutch) beer gives me a headache right away, but the worst beers I ever had are Millers and Budweiser (American).

I might have had other memorable beers, but the problem with memorable beer is you can't recall anything the day after. ;)

Favourite beer would have to be Tooheys New. But I haven't had beer for a while, ever since a friends birthday party.

I mostly drink Bundy Rum & Cola these days, but will have almost any spirit. And once I get really drunk, I start doing the really stupid shots and stuff.

I've done a Tequila Suicide (you snort the salt, and squirt the lemon in your eye...), a Jellyfish (shotglass with Vodka and a capfull of Tobasco sauce) and one which my friends brother makes us at the local bar (he works there).

Another drink for when you just really have the need to get drunk when low on cash is the almighty Passion Pop. It's a really cheap cider/wine or something like that, it's about $4, in a bottle the size of a wine bottle, is 10% alcohol or something, and at first tastes pretty crap, though you get drunk quickly with it and it tastes better.

Whatever you do though, don't Skull it down, otherwise you will be VERY sick...

It's interesting to see how many people here don't enjoy the taste of beer.  I didn't used to, either.

In fact, if it weren't for my beloved CIDER, I would have spent my first 18 years sober!

So if anyone here really can't stand beer but doesn't mind the taste of apple juice, give cider a go.  They also have pear flavor and stuch...but I can only vouch for the apple.

And you know how people will taste something new and then give it to you and say, "Here, you'll like this, you can hardly taste the alcohol..."?  And how it actually means, "here, this is only moderately horrible?"

Well, with cider, you really can't taste the alcohol.  And it has as much in it as a beer does...so you can blitz your gourd right along with everyone else.

In conclusion, I like cider!

Nothing conjours up the world of mid adolescence quite like Passion Pop. I remember when it was $2 a bottle and it complemented teh goon that was the other perennial companion at parties thrown by cash strapped teenagers.

We once threw a graduation party for my brother on the train with passion pop. The guards came past and looked at us, said nothing and moved on. AS long as we cleaned up, I don't think they cared since we weren't going to harm anyone.

Train guards were always rock in my experience.

If I were to buy beer at a nightclub, it would be coronas. I drink other beer like XXXX and VB at parties when it is 'complimentary'...

I remember being so very embarrassed when 2 of my 16 year old chick friends pursuaded me to purchase passion pop for them...

But Goon is good for getting maggoted really fast!

I despise Rum just so you all know...

My favorite has to be Guiness.
I was told stout loses its taste with transport more than any other kind of beer. So the further you are from the brewery, the least good it tastes... My friend who went to Ireland confirmed that their brews taste quite different too.
So if I like it so much here, I wonder what it'd be in Dublin.

Other than that, I'll take a John Martin's whenever I'm in a pub that sells it.
Which reminds me, I still have to try Porters. But the only english pub I know doesn't sell english ale at all... wtf

I also like trappists on occasion, preferably Leffe.

As a kid I would always beg for my dad or his friends to give me the end of their beer bottles.
When we started drinking, alcopops weren't commercialised here yet, so we relied on beer and strong alcohol.
And whiskey-coke, just so we could fool the teachers...

AMERICAN BEER IS FOR PANSIES. CANADIAN BEER FOR THE WIN.

Ahem.

Being under the Age of Majority, I have obviously never ingested any beverages of an alcoholic nature, so as to comply completely with the law set down by my federal government that was put there for my benefit.

All right, vodka.

Hehe, Passion pop and Goon, I think a cask of goon ends up cheaper, but if you're an alcoholic, the cheapest stuff you can get in the biggest bottles with the highest alcohol percentage are things like Sherry and Gin. Now you know why your grandmother is always happy.

Layabout, A Queenslander that doesn't like rum?????

fair enough, I hate the stuff too, but I have a few mates that drink it like water, silly alcoholics.

I might write some of these beers down so if see them round I can try them out.

Let me see...
IMO
Nothing beats Sierra Nevada, Saranac Pale Ale, or a good gin and tonic...

The classic, of course, is to take one of those little Dole juice bottles, drink half of it, fill the other half with vodka or 151, and shake it up a bit. That should keep you happy on the way to the party. :)

EDIT: Has anyone ever had pastis before? Nasty stuff, made from anise seeds, I think. Tastes like black licorice.

Pastis is quite common here. If you don't know what it is, maybe you've heard of Ricard, it's a famous brand.
I don't drink it, or anisette or any anise-based alcohol.

Well sambucca is drunk neat. You pour a shot of it, light it on fire, put your hand over the glass (this forms a seal and sort makes the glass stick to your hand), and smack your hand down on the table. Then you drink it. It tastes horrible, but it's quite impressive to see.

Post by: jaz on Mon 05/01/2004 16:26:45
Now this is a topic of my taste!I consider myself an expert when it comes to beer ;)

I´m into lagers and my all time favourite would be Pilsner Urquell with Budweiser (the original one from Ceske Budejovice - Budweis) as a close runner up.

For everybody not acquainted with those, they are from the Czech Republic and  I highly recommend to try them both.

The first one is quite crisp and  tastes a bit bitter. It gave name to all Pilsner beers around the world since it´s was the first beer of this "base fermented "style. It´s brewed in the town of Pilsen. It´s the only beer that can use the word "Pilsner" as a trade mark, others can just add "pilsener beer" after their name. (I hate to see Miller referring their products as "true Pilsner" - yuck!)

The other one - Budweiser, or Budvar in Czech is a beer from town of Budweis (surprisingly) and this is what Mr. Anhauser tasted on his educational trip to Europe and wanted to copy after he started brewing his beer.  It´s mellow, sweetish and overally pleasant. There has been brewery in Budweis for over 700 years now so I guess they should have some experience. (Americans note that it´s sold under name of Czechvar in the U.S. due to legal fight between the two breweries - in some countries American Budweiser is entitled to use the trademark, in some Czech brewery) Pilsner Urquell is available at many places in the U.S.A. so it shouldn´t be a problem to get it, it only tends to be one of the most expensive brands.

As for American beers, I never grew fond of all American brands while in the States Miller, Coors, Pabst... watery and empty, can´t help myself. Only maybe Budweiser is a bit better but dtill doesn´t match the qualities of the original. ;D Local and microbrews are something different though. I found a particular interest in all Widmer Brothers products while in Seattle (I believe this beer is from Portland, OR) and Fat Tire was far from being disgusting... ;)

I used to be a big beer drinker during my college days, I could have knocked down ten pints an evening and walk away like nothing has happened. Sometimes I could get as far as twenty... (shitfaced though ;D) No wonder Czechs are the biggest beer drinkers in the world (with average anual consumption of 165 litres of beer -  some 45 gallons - per capita)  We consider beer our national treasure and it´s even the cheapest drink in pubs by far over here! And by drinks I mean alcohol free beverages like soda too. Including bottled water! Yes, the beer is cheaper than water. And it´s a top quality stuff. Now, is there any reason to drink anything else?

But there is a true gem amongst all beers worldwide - STEEL RESERVE
213 malt liquor!!1!11!! one1one! Da beer for the 133t35t3ST!1! One gulp gets you hooked for life! (provided you don´t shit your pants instantly)

Went to a few different pubs tonight, went out in Sydney to The Rocks, which is a real touristy place where most of the people you meet are from the UK.

There's many international pubs ie Irish, German, Australian. etc

We started out at this one called 'The Australian' like as if we didn't know we were already there, but I was surprised, they sold Gourmet  Pizzas with some odd toppings. eg. Crocodile, Kangaroo & Emu, like as if I'd eat native animals. I'd rather eat those ones that grow on trees, ie Cows, Pigs, Chickens and Sheep (those deadly animals that run away really fast)

Anyway, I didn't eat there. Eventually we ended up at this German Pub called 'The Lowenbrau' which had bar staff in traditional German outfits and sold expensive German beers (not necessarily good beers but they just charged a lot), seeing as it was something different, I had a Lowenbrau Dark, a dark malty type beer, not bad but nothing that exciting. I don't know if this is excepted in Germany, but the main thing that pissed me off was the amount of head on the beers (it's probably just to rip you off) but you by a 0.5 litre beer expecting to get around 500mls but you probably get about 400mls plus some fucking froth, no wonder europeans think they drink a lot.

The music was exciting too, it was also German, with these new bands I'd never hear of like ABBA, Britney Speers, Eminem, Vanilla Ice, quite entertaining.

In conclusion, If I really want to find out about German pubs, it would be best achieved in Germany, and If anyone wants to find out about Australian pubs, I wouldn't go to 'The Australian'

But The Rocks is a good place to go to meet and get drunk with tourists in Sydney. It actually was a good night.

I was surprised to find Sierra Nevada over here! It is a good beer. Tried Scottish Heather Ale, that's good. Jack Frost is made with blackberries - yummy stuff.

hahahahahhahahahahahah
poor lassie.. I would not even dream of using her in a drink. "lassi" is a drink that is made of milk. Its kind of like a milkshake, but it can be salty also. I should have expected it not being known. I don't think it is drunk much outside a few countries in Asia. You could probably get it at an Indian resteraunt.
Ok, I am done with the geography/cooking lesson
