hey folks, I realised, that the world can't have enough classic adventure-games (right after playing the shitty, new larry 8).
so now I'm practising with the "adventure game studio editor" and it runs quite well, but I'm tired of creating all the graphics with my photoeditor (I'm using paint-shop pro8). it's really the most mork. any ideas which program I could use instead?
for example I want wont to create another room. should be kind of 3d (as the usual ones ...f.e. kings quest, monkey island, zac mc kracken etc.) With my photoeditor this is a bunch of work...isn't  there any program (editor) like...I don't know...a "room-editor§ for this kind of stuff??

I would really be grateful, if anyone could help me out.

For one thing, PSP isn't a "photo editor". It's my favourite graphics editor and I couldn't recommend anything better than that for most things, especially adventure game art. I'm sure someone else could give you a recommendation though...

What's "the most mork" mean? o_O

I think you're going to find that there's no way out of putting a lot of work into your graphics. It's simple maths really... unless you want to use someone else's graphics in your game, they're going to take time, and if you want them to look decent, they're going to be somewhat difficult.

i agree with that ....
going to the point, i bought NeoPaint (www.neo-soft.com), that has a version for DOS, and one for windows. There is a shareware verion on-line ... try it ... its ok for me !

PSP, PS, GIMP. All the same, just different layout. They aren't soley for photoediting, you can make anything with them.

If you want to get oldschool, try and find Deluxe Paint 2 (What they used to make MI) or a program called GrafX2

There's no program in existence designed soley for background creation. Sorry bub.

Igm:
Deluxe Paint 2 isn't all that good. Unles I downloaded the wrong program. I think nothing beats PSP. But if you want to stick to the basics MS PAINT has awerithing you actualy need. I used it for all my games.

Mr Bungle

Can you draw, and do you have a scanner? I find it helps to get a perspective grid going on paper, then place everything, replete with vanishing points, onto the sheet in pencil. Then, I scan in the rough image, and trace it in Photoshop 6 (although I'm sure PSP8 will work just as well; there are only minor differences in the basic editing structure).

The same goes for walking and character animations, although for those, I recommend getting every body part down as a bounding box first, and then working through from there.

An alternative to using PSP for your backgrounds would be to get hold of (read: pirate) a powerful 3D program, like Maya or 3DSMax, and learn how to use the basic tools to create rooms. You can then render them all in cell-shaded mode for a pretty cartoon effect, if necessary. You will have more accurate shadows and lighting, provided you use the thing properly, but you will lose detail on the objects, since cell-shading is a very basic form of render. No problem, though: you can fill those in later in PSP.

I hope all that helps.
<pslocum> I appreciate your commitment to excellence both in orange juice and crazy f***ing monkeys. And combinations thereof.

<Mr-Bungle> Thank you. I appreciate this comment.

the amiga versions of dpaint are much better than any pc graphics editor, as they can all work with limited palettes (i mean things like gradient fills and proper rotation without fuzzing up the graphics), if i could get an amiga emulator working better on this pc i'd probably use Deluxe Paint IV to do all my art work.
also, did you know that id software used dpaint2 to do the graphics for all their games (well, FPS anyway) up until quake3? :)

The Amiga versions of Deluxe Paint work perfectly with WINUAE (www.winuae.net) if you configure it right. I use it sometimes. With Deluxe Paint IV AGA or Deluxe Paint V you can draw at 256 colours and more, older Versions have a limit of 32 colours.

the most colours you can have in the amiga versions of dpaint is 4096 in HAM mode, or atleast in Deluxe Paint 4 on a non-AGA machine (i had and still have an Amiga 600), in Deluxe Paint 3 i remember 64 colours being all i could have, but back then, and probably even now, i didn't even need all those colours...

With AGA (Amiga1200, 4000) you could have even more colours, more than 600000 in HAM8 mode.  Deluxe Paint V and Deluxe Paint IV AGA could handle this mode, but it was very slow unless you had a strong CPU. I think WINUAE should be fast enough.
But I never really used more than 256 colours at once.
