Title: Brittens and Such
Post by: Creed Malay on Wed 06/04/2005 18:21:47
I've heard words, but no-thing concretey, and the summer is lapping fast at our heels. Is there to be a UK type gathering this year, for those of us who cannot travel further afield? It would be extremely great to meet friends old and new.

Also, Is anybody from here going to Glastonbury? 'Cause I am, and it would be fun to link up. Maybes.

We've talked about Brittens a lot in IRC but as far as i know there isnt a final date or place. I myself would love to go, as long as it isnt too far afield.

Well, if we're talking around ten or less people, and I get the chance to chat to them before hand/already know them/get sworn statements that they wont wreck stuff, I could offer my place as the venue. So long as no-one minds the treck to the scabby and poor end of the country.

i would love to go, as i know qquite a few or the brits in this community, but parents are a huge problemo as, "going to see the men i met on the internet" isn't really a good idea in their view (can't see why myself...) but, if i do get permission, up north would be super, as thats where i live (except im in the posh bit, har har davy)

Well, I guess it'd have to be over 18's only. Would there be any legal thingies? I mean, it wouldn't be much more than organising a party, right?

Zooty - I am no strange man, I am CREED. Also, poverty is the new wealth. Ziggity-zip.

Sweet.  Thanks Creed, for taking the initiative here.

I might not be around for Mittens, but if Brittens is in June I can definitely come.  I have a free ticket to the UK (long story) and would love to use it.  Just please don't make it during the weekend of the 10th!  That is my cousin's bat mitzvah weekend and is therefore FORBIDDEN!.

Oh, hey, the camsite is fine fine fine with me. It was just that no-one else seemed to be getting the ball rolling, you know.

I don't think an over 18 limit is neccessary (for Mittens either actually), there hasn't been one for Brittens before, we're just a group of friends anyway, since when did going somewhere with a friend who is under 18 become a legal liability.

I'll try and come to Brittens, although Mittens is top priority.

Brittens is usually a 16+ affair, but its been like that because I've been responsible and I'm more than happy for that age and above to attend. Thankfully in our country you don't have to be 18 just to enter a bar, its just about getting served. Not that Brittens is just about getting pissed or anything... :P

The ball has been rolling but slowly, mainly because:

MITTENS hasn't been finalised, but it looks like it will
be in GREECE, hosted by Helm.

There was some debate other whether we should
hold a Brittens or Swittens.

From what I've seen so far people are generally
more interested in visiting the UK, I recommend we seal the location of the smaller Mittens event ASAP. If its the UK and at "the campsite" then that can be arranged very very easily. Old woman will know exactly who we are... :P She'll also remember those steamy nights with Chris....

Creed's place would be cool - but is it accessable for
international/european travellers? Are you also sure
people would ever return after visiting the North? :P

"The campsite" would be best really. It's quite close to London and its airports for non-Brits, and is easily accessible from all over the UK [except Northern Ireland, but shush]...

If you forgot, m0dsie, during Mittens 04 we had to walk around to find a place that could let everyone in! that's how we ended up at the ol' Irish pub...

So in conclusion, in America you have to be 21 years old to enter a real bar. God, I love freedom sooo much that I'm gonna go enjoy my freedom right now.

As you say, the campsite does have the advantage that we know where it is, and it's easily accessible. And hey, it has that reunion feel to it ;)

You promised to keep that a secret >:(

I'll probably go as long as AGA doesn't " beat me up, steal my wallet, and throw me off the train."

The sweet old campsite it is, then. It will be nice to go there again.
Any time other than the Glastonbury weekend is fine with me.
Will there be baby ducks in the river again?
Because I liked the baby ducks.

Also - the North is great. As great as a place can be.

I'll probally catch the train down with Jake then, as long as you guys are cool with 17's.

Wait for me people! I'll come if I find the financing. How much do you reckon the total sum will be, excluding the plane ticket?

I too will be at Glastonbury!
just my fifty-pence-worth... Man inflation's a bitch!

Whoo! Fancy arranging some kind of meet-me-do among the seething hordes at Glastonbury, Fair Captain? So long as you are not scared of gingers or anything. I would understand.

Of course, you'll have to wait until Mittens to meet the really hip people.

As I recall, the camp site fee was about 10 pounds, plus you'll probably need another 10-15 pounds for food; and then any additional trips (for example if we went into London like we did last year) would cost extra. Plus you'd need some money to get from the airport to the camp site, I can't remember how much that cost.

The other question of course is how long do we want Brittens to last? A weekend like last year is probably the best plan since people don't have to take so much time off work and whatnot.

A 2/4 day weekend, depending on when you can turn up / have to leave
Title: Re: Brittens and Such
Post by: on Thu 07/04/2005 23:24:34
When it comes to cost, Chris is right - for 5 days
camping you will be charged 10 to 20 pounds.

Last year I charged FIVE pounds for food.
I'm raising that this year to TEN pounds,
simply for the fact the food situation has
been awful the other two years and I've
had to spend a lot of my own money on
food, which I'm not prepared to do this year.

So thats a running cost of £30 so far.

I'd suggest up to £50 spending money,
there is no telling what we may do!

A good £30-40 for transport fees would be
useful too.

I'll keep you notified because I'd like
to find a week where we can at least
do one interesting thing, like, go to
London to an exhibition or something.

Total running cost approx: £70

If you come with £150, you are da
man. (Or wo-man, but I dont think
Yufsters coming :( :P)

NOTE; thats actually a weeks expenses,
so for a weekend £100, if that, would be
necessary. LOL.

It will probably run from a Friday morning
to a Mon or Tue afternoon, depending on
flights and so forth. I'll stick around as long
as necessary.

For Brittens, I'm looking at the start or
middle of July, ideally. If its in June then
I won't be able to attend but thats fine
cos I can still arrange the campsite for
those that will be attending.

I have o choice but to attend. But i will need to be hooked up with a tent and perhaps some loose women.

You know I'd love to go again but as I'm planning to attend the actual Mittens I guess I have to pass Brittens this year. And if you are planning to have Brittens sometime in June I can't attend anyways. It would be sweet to meet again at "the campsite" though, it's a lovely place.

QuotePlus you'd need some money to get from the airport to the camp site, I can't remember how much that cost.

Last year it was only £2 from Heathrow to Staines and about £1 from Staines to Laleham if I remember right. Matt Goble would be the best one to provide the correct information though.

QuoteI'm raising that this year to TEN pounds, simply for the fact the food situation has been awful the other two years and I've had to spend a lot of my own money on food, which I'm not prepared to do this year.

Good idea. The monday morning last year we had only biscuits and milk to eat for breakfast. :P

Hurrah! Brittens, time for me to show my face again!

A weekend sounds best, especially as CJ says for those who have to book time off work.

M0DS, any chance you can bring my chair with you  ;D

I guess I should take a stab at an adventure fame or something (Otherwise it's another year of me stroking my chin and congratulating other people on their games...)

Hey Petteri,

How you keepin?

I drift in from time to time, although I'm still waiting on my mail-order brain to understand AGS 2.7  :P

I'm sorry you won't be able to make it this year, but I'm sure our 'little' gatherings will go on for many years to come!

M0Ds: It was a white folding garden chair - Didn't someone take a photo of all the stuff 'unaccounted' for?

JetXl: Well at the rate you were stung for Cabs, could you afford for it to last any longer than 4 days ;D Seriously, I see Brittens as an AGS-fix for those of us too skint / disorganised / insert own excuse to make to to full-on Mittens.  Mittens will be worldwide, Brittens will always be for us Brits...  but anyone is welcome... as long as they're old enough...  I think that's it.
