Donnie Darko Sequel. Uh-oh.

So they're making a sequel to one of my three favourite movies ever, Donnie Darko.
I'm not happy with this.
For one thing, it's not being directed by Richard Kelly. Now, to me that sounds like blasphemy.
As well as this; why?
Why (other than to make a quick buck, thanks) would you do something like this?
Why the fuck do sequels keep getting made for movies that don't need a sequel.
Donnie Darko is in my opinion brilliant, and the ending is strong and conclusive.
Strong and conclusive.

I didn't think "Donnie Darko" was really great, just okay. (The same story has been done before.)

The story of the sequel as indicated on IMDB seems ludicrous. It's like Highlander 2 - nothing to do with the original.

My opinion is that you shouldn' t be so emotionally involved in something so banal as a movie, till the point of getting anxious if the third part is going to be directed by a person you don' t like.

For example, I didn't liked Monkey Island 4 at all, so, mental exercise to "take it out" of the saga in your mind, and that' s all... No need to get annoyed, really.

Emotional attachment to a film is reasonable. Many people love books the way many love films. Although movie lovers get shit all over more often than book readers. I don't think any publisher would green light John Q Publics sequel to Brave New World or 1984. Some books are great as a standalone piece and further books, by the author, would be useless, so having someone else come along and do it would be blasphemy. Same principle for Kelly's Darko.
And Fluke, the only resemblance I see to Fear and Loathing is that there's a car trip involved.

So far it sounds like it's going to be pretty bad.

I'll probably end up seeing it, but I'll pirate it first and if it's good then I'll either rent it or see it in a cinema again.

I'm personally intrigued.
I liked Donnie Darko a lot, and if treated with respect a sequel might just work.
A world was created in the first film and it is a world that I would personally like to revisit.

But, I do have the similar reservations, and until I see it I'm going to assume it will be crap.

I liked Donnie Darko so much I saw it during its 2nd theater release and I bought the DVD.   Then I spent 4 years listening to film students rant and rave about the movie.    Then I watched it again.      And now when I watch it the dialogue is too distracting and sometimes forced.    It's still a great movie but one of those that's sadly become too overrated for its own good.

It doesn't surprise me that they're making a sequel... doesn't really ruin anything for me.
