Title: Bypassing firewall?
Post by: Haddas on Sun 14/08/2005 01:25:34
I'm at the World Champinoships in Helsinki as a Smoke Watcher right now. I have a computer I can do just about anything on... well. not everything. XP finds it a wise desision to block mIRC and all the other irc apps I've tried. So if there are any java based ones I can use to access irc.adventuregamestudio.co.uk or if I can bypass the firewall, I'd like to know how and or where.

Well, I thought there was a java applet somewhre on the ags website, but I must have been dreaming.

Unfortunately, it turns out that if you connect to IRC via java, windows firewall complains about it, too. I just tested it on some random java IRC applet.

Looks like you're stuck with the Forum!

Dear god no! I tried connecting with my phone earlier too, but it seems to have some problem with the Gateway right now, and I have no idea when that'll get fixed. I'm not saying I don't like the forums, but IRC's just a little bit more, you know, realtime?

Are you using a router or just Windows firewall? Normally, the firewall applet will pop a window up asking whether you want to Keep Blocking or Unblock the application the first time you run it.  If you don't get that option, go into control panel and check out the security settings.  I'm not on a Windows machine at the moment, so I can't give precise instructions.  It'll have a place to enter exceptions for certain URLs or IPs.

If you're using a router, then you may end up having to open a port (Port forwarding under router setup) that corresponds to whatever mIRC, Kazaa, BitTorrent or other programs are set to use.

I only know it's admin controlled. and I'm on a random PC for a night. My shift ends in about 10 minutes, so that's it. Oh well. it was boring while it lasted.

Well, basically, I replace the firealarm and unlock the front door and let drunken athletes in.
