Leave it to Uwe Boll. I'm pretty sure that 'Yahtzee Cult' would come to an end pretty much immediatly. ;)

But back to the Yahtzee discussion. Seriously, his games are quite good, but still not perfect. For example, that puzzle in 7DAS when you have to get rid of the captain - in a normal adventure game, we would have considered that a "design suicide" (after all, it's quite similar to the suit puzzle in Outbreak, which I don't think anyone but me knows), but HERE...

I guess I'm in a minority that pretty much ignores his games, somewhat on principle. While 5 Days was one of my first AGS games and it was okay, I have since revoked my support after spending a few minutes on that site you so graciously linked Sinsin :)

Seems we're in the same boat Disco.

More importantly, Dave doesn't consider himself too good for this community.
Well, not enough to leave, at least.

Posting here is what I call "slumming it." :-D

Seriously, though.  Leave Yahtzee alone.  If he wanted to come here, he'd come here.  He obviously has his reasons.  Please respect them.

And Boyd? HAHAHAHAHA.

Buckethead

I don't ask him to come here... only to sell the rights for his games to an awsome movie producer.

Do yourself a favor and don't judge the person and the art at the same time. It's as worst as those who say Michael Jackson's songs are crap because he's weird now. Or those refusing to watch any movies with Tom Cruise because he jumped on the couch.

Dave Gilbert is a great game maker because all of his games are unique...

This is funny considering 2 of Yahtzee most recents projects were mix of adventure and space trading simulator, mix of adventure and platformer, and one of this unreleased project was an AGS life/dating sim.

Quote from: Steel Drummer on Wed 11/04/2007 03:31:55(most of Yahtzee's games were all from the same series- all that I can recall except for Odysseus Kent ). Who else has made a game where you play as a Rabbi? Dave, you rock!

This is funny considering Dave Gilbert released a lot less games than Yahtzee and 2 of Dave's projects are from the Bestower/Blackwell series and he already announced he'd release 2 more Blackwell games to make it a trilogy.

Quote from: The Orator on Wed 11/04/2007 04:22:15And Dave, you may want his power, but he wants your money.   ;D

Now THAT is funny! :D

Three Blackwell games?  Who said anything about three Blackwell games?

I'm making five. :p

And yes, I want all your money.  I have a coffee habit that needs supporting.  And a dog.

If you keep making good games you'll arrive at a similar position as yahtzee, Dave, quite rapidly. All the better if you keep the somethingawfulisms down unlike him, and therefore not hurt your games by your personality.

Personally, I think the Yahtzee phenomenon (equal amounts of praise and slight disdain) come from the fact that his name is an AWESOME dice game.

I've just read the wiki and it's one of the funniest things I have ever read. Like an online soap opera. Brilliant!

His games are pretty good, but I never really got into them. They were all the same essentially too. After 5 days, the rest of the series didn't advance much in technology or scope.

Nikolas

Personal opinion maybe ? ;)

SSH

Or maybe if Dave keeps making good games he'll be able to afford a trip to Brisbane, and hence be in the same position...

What an unexpected manifestation of epistemological clarity. What do you base anything on, Akatosh?

Yahtzee's games are professional and clean and made in a coherent style, which makes them very playable.
Still, I can't understand how people consider them to be literary masterpieces plot-wise. They seem extremely generic and superficial to me. Like cheap horror or detective novels that you'll find near the counter in a supermarket.

I played his latest game, and it was very nice, with well executed parser-puzzles and a mundane setting, until the horror-part started. Which was way too early.
Blood and skeletons everywhere, sudden flashes of nightmare visions, a diary with increasingly distressful entries, until the last entry is interrupted mid-page with something violent and bloody OMG can it be more original?

Furthermore, he hasn't managed to take the shortest step towards improving his graphics or at least adding something new stylistically, making you feel like you're watching the same 5 screens over and over again.

Tuomas

I think it's close the thing they have in oscar awards. The movies usually aren't very good, but people like them because they're entertaining or something, so they win. I agree I had a great time playing his games through, but ok, they were not any better than most games I've played.

I love you, Andail.

BOYD, where's the love for me?  I thanked you, too! :(

I'm going to go cry now.

some - and same - people consider Final Fantasy 6 or 7 to be amazing games in terms of plot and characterization. They just have - comparably to me - lower expectations, that's ok.

Akatosh: I base than on my long gaze within the innards of the goat I sacrificed to the dark lords last night. Seer of visions be me.

Ah, one day I hope to be worshipped like you guys.  :D
The fediverse needs great indie game developers! Find me there!

Right, seriously, what is the purpose of this thread?

To tell Yahtzee he's great? He knows that, and besides, he's got a forum praising him, so he rarely glances at these forums if he ever does, why praise him, why call him back? If he wanted to come back, he would. And yes, he's a bit of a prick, and yes, his games seem a bit corner shop-esque, but they're enjoyable, people like them, and he's good at telling stories.

Of course, some people like him, but hate is games, some people don't like him, but love his game, some people love everything about him, and some people hate everything about him. And frankly, I seriously doubt anyone is going to change their minds, so why make a thread?

Now then, would a mod please lock this thread and save CJ some money?

Quotewhy make a thread?

Because no-one has for a good three days or so. Plus he's probably the biggest independent promoter of AGS. And he wins all the awards. There is always much to debate about that man. As there is Phil Reed, the missing C Leksutin, the mysterious whereabouts of The_Butcher, original french-man Jeremie Lumbroso, infamous Erkki Lindpere and the not so distant yet MIA Jannar.....but those people aren't necessarily the biggest influences in AGS at the moment. Yahtzee still is.

I kind of feel like a n00b here but I don't have a clue who any of those are.
