MSX Nostalgiaaaa  :'( :-*

You definitely can, albeit it could be a bit cumbersome. Good luck with it!

Yes, you can. Though it might not be super easy.

For example, in 2009 abstauber released an AGS game with greatly realized top-down shooter bits:

You should ask him for help.

I think Abstauber based a lot of the code on the source of AGS-Invaders by Rocco. You can download the code from here.

I also played around with scripting a shooter a while back, but I didn't get very far. I did upload a tech demo and wrote a very rambling post on how I did it though. Not sure if either would be of use to you.

barefoot is trying to create one. Although there is still a lot of problems that need to be fixed.

thanks everyone  :) I read all your feedback links, made a better understanding of the project as well :)
I finished designing the player's ship, enemies, weapons and terrain.. and was looking for just the right engine to begin my geeky work. are there any game engines made precisely for such games?

Game Maker is probably the best, free engine. Or M.U.G.E.N., which was solely built for shoot em ups, even though it's used for making fighting games.

Hey, this looks alot like "Invasion of the Floating Death Orbs", a demo I made back with version 2.6!

Unfortunately with the forum search function down I can't link to the GIP thread, but here is the demo.  This kind of arcade stuff just involves working a lot with AGS's repeatedly_execute function, and something as basic as Nemesis shouldn't be that hard to do.

Good luck, whatever tool you decide on.
