Just sit and draw. You'll get better as time passes.

Well like Scorpiorus mentioned you've got many programs available to create backgrounds. Personally i use two programs. I own Photoshop, but i use PaintShop Pro cause of it's ease, and i use Alias|Wavefront Maya 5.0 for 3D backgrounds. Of course you can't learn these programs in a day, so play around with them until your comfortable (it's basic logistics). You can download PaintShop Pro Evaluation from the JASC software website, and you can download Maya 4.5 free edition from the Alias|Wavefront website. To give you some insight on Maya. It is the program used by all the highend 3D animators, and designers in the industry. It was used to create Final Fantasy (movie), Shrek, all of the Pixar movies, Final Flight of the Osiris (animatrix), etc... So you know that this program means business. But of course like i said, this won't come in a day. I've been at it for more then a year now, and i still haven't mastered it completely.
Another useful app, which i find comes very handy is a plugin called Eyecandy4000. This plugin works with PaintShop Pro, and Photoshop to give nice effects to your images. Look it up in a search engine and give it a try.

Peace out. And i hope you manage to create cool backgrounds.

and besides MAYA, you can start with Bryce5 for example. It's a great program for making cool landscapes and objects. It's very easy to learn.. and the price of the program is not too high... if you compare it to maya.
I have also 3D Studio Max from my brothers work... so I'm lucky.. cause that program is about $4000.. and bryce5 supports import of files from maya.. 3dmax and lots of others!

I just use notepad, and type out the bitmap code. Takes a bit of planning though ...  ;)

But the results are worth it!

Wait! You didn't mention that in your tutorial! Miez is holding out on us!

The one and zero button on my keyboard have stopped working though - must be the strain. :)

Seriously, Stab: check this thread - http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=5644

It tells you all you've ever wanted to know about paint programs and why (not) to use them.

The morally correct choice, of course, is the GPL-licensed The Gimp. Get your windows version today at http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/

Besides being totally free, it's also more comfortable to use than, say, photoshop.
