Hellos!
I was thinking about something...
Now with those new small-ish laptops, those dual core laptops with huge RAM etc, a simple single small memory ridiculou laptop should be cheap, right?
So, a couple of questions if I may, since I'm not 100% sure on some things...
1. I would like a laptop for very few programs: Windows and Word, Finale 2000 (from '99 so it works pretty much to every computer in existance!), ultrimate paint and that's all. Nothing else. Maybe winamp for some music, but not necessary.
With such low expectations I could go for any laptop really, right?
2. Where do I get such a laptop? Don't think a new one, but... ebay? brrr... I don't like ebay really. the loot? someplace else? Maybe one of you is selling?
3. I would like (of course) to format the hard disk and start over. That said, I have an OEM version of Windows home, and the CD actually (which I just found out that I had it last week as a matter of fact). Am I correct to assume that I could install Windows Home to the laptop from THAT CD? Or it needs some verification from the Internet and blah blah...?
Thank you for your help :)
you can get a linux based laptop for £219 on play.com, it will run windows but you need a USB cd drive to install it. it's not terribly high specced but it still seems really neat. you can view it at Play.com (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/654/861/-/3516641/Asus-Eee-PC-701-4G-Celeron-Mobile-900MHz-512MB-4GB-7-Linux-Laptop-Notebook-Black/Product.html?searchtype=genre)
My dad nicks them from work (well, really he only nicked one laptop, and that was only because it was contaminated by arsenic... and I'm on it right now...)
Emerald. Really what use is your post?
Boyd: Yup I saw those computers, but with 2 GB "hard disk" or 4 GB I'm afraid that it really isn't enough. :(
I saw on ebay some for £75 and so on (PIII for example), and I'm pondering on that, although I don't trust ebay...
you could always get a USB hard drive or external hard drive enclosure to give you more space. it'd probably be worth spending a bit more money on something new with a warranty than taking a chance with something cheap on ebay, most of the cheaper laptops i've looked at on there don't come with batteries or have batteries that don't hold a charge for very long.
Dell has some laptops for about the same price as the EE. They're pretty bare bones, but they'll do what your asking for. Take a look there. I bought a Dell and I've been nothing but happy with it for 8 months now.
Also, if you count as a student somewhere, you could probably get a discount.
the laptop prices on dell.co.uk are much higher than that of the EE, the only place where you might save money is in the small business section, but they're still more expensive. granted they are better, but i'm sure there are some requirements to get one of the business computers.
the cheapest home laptop is the Inspiron for £359, granted it's much more machine for not much more money, but the EE is smaller and more suited for very general use, and part of the cost of a Dell is for the OS too.
Damn! I'm an idiot! I already have a 350 GB USB hard disk for backup purposes! I could use that! DAMN!
EE?
And, yes I am a student, so I could get % discounted? :D Linky anyone, something? (honestly I've ripped google apart and haven't found much. Dell and PCWorld are simply too expensive to begin with...)
LGM was talking about the US Dell site, i doubt they offer any such discounts in the UK, and by EE i meant the Asus Eee. Personally if i could afford it i would buy the £359 Dell just for the better hardware which would ultimately be useless to me. but the Asus is good value and seems to have good reviews from people who bought it to do exactly what it's designed for.

Nikolas. Suck my balls.
I REALLY enjoyed your reply! I've got my new signature now! Thank you for that! :=
Hehe, you're welcome. Nice to see you don't always take yourself so seriously...
Heh... I'm glad that someone is always following what I say...
???
I bought the Asus EEE laptop this week and I must say that if you don't have fat fingers and all you're looking for is a small, light and quiet laptop to use for writing, browsing the web, chatting and stuff like that, then it's a very good choice. As a small complaint I must say that the keyboard, apart from being very small, is not sensitive enough, which makes it hard to write fast sometimes. But you'll get used to that. Also it does get quite warm sometimes, regardless of what some reviews may say.
I still haven't gotten the chance to install XP on it so I haven't been able to do much with it. But even with the default Linux you'll get most of the mandatory actions done.
So yeah, for its price it's excellent and I recommend it.
New laptops of a pretty good spec are ridiculously cheap nowadays and will last you a lot longer than a cheap ebay jobbie. Laptops lose value so quickly now it's almost impossible to re sell a laptop for any kind of money.
