Title: Coins!
Post by: Gfunkera on Sun 12/09/2004 18:07:23
Hey just found this dime the other day does anyone know what it might be worth? I joined a coin forum but I'm still waiting for confirmation so I thought I might give a try here and see if anyone might know?

Ah, yes. An 18943 american dime. I'd say, judging by it's distinguishing marks and relative lack of wear on the designs that this would be worth approximately one american dime...back in 1843...

Have you tried eBay?
Quick search got  these auctions. (http://search.ebay.com/1843-seated-liberty-dime_W0QQsokeywordredirectZ1QQfromZR8)

I don't know anything about coin collecting, but the ones I looked at don't look to be in as good condition as yours - e.g. details visible on shield and gown, although yours has a few more dints in.

So, based on that - anywhere betweenÃ,  $0.01 and $30, I guess.

WOW!!

I have a couple old coins (earliest is 1904!)  That's quite a find!

If I might ask ... where did you find it?

As to the pricing?  I found this link ...
http://www.pcgs.com/prices/frame.chtml?type=date&filename=seated_dime
It doesn't really seem to give prices (though I didn't dig that deep!) thought it might be of use to you.

I remember finding Roman coins (as in, Roman Empire coins) on eBay once. Beat that!

I actually found it in a box of old junk in my grandmothers attic, theres stuff up there she brought with her from Philadelphia in the  30's. There's actually a lot of interesting stuff I guess my great grandfather owned a book store in Philly before the depression then sold it but brought a huge load of books & magizines w/ him to Maine.

You can buy genuine Roman-era coins from the giftshop in the museum in my city. They're not all that rare...

The Roman era spanned over thousand years, and there must have been a multitude of different monetary units...so that's pretty vague, AGA

If I was you, I'd auction it or get it looked into at an antiques shop, before ebaying it :o

Not really. Saying "Roman era" would guarantee that it would be at least 1200 years old, given that was (approximately) how long ago the Romans' reign ended.

Anyway, the coins themselves don't say "Roman era" on them, they have the details of exactly which emperor was reigning when the coin was used...

Disney Land probably have them coins, they probably cost $2 and you need 3 to use one of the arcade machines for 1 credit!

I didn't realize they were all that common until I saw them on eBay. Interesting little pieces of history.

As far as I know this is so called "Seated Liberty" silver dime. This piece is of less than perfect quality but still well preserved.

There were three varieties of these coins 1843, 1843 1843/1843 and 1843O
Depending on quality prices are as follows:

Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  GÃ,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  VGÃ,  Ã,  Ã, FÃ,  Ã,  Ã,  VFÃ,  Ã,  EFÃ,  Ã,  Ã, AUÃ,  Ã,  MS60Ã,  Ã, MS65Ã,  Ã,  Prf.

1843Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  $8.77Ã,  $9.37Ã,  $10Ã,  $17Ã,  $45Ã,  $175Ã,  $260Ã,  $2,550Ã,  Ã,
1843 1843/1843Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  $9Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã, $12Ã,  Ã,  Ã, $18Ã,  $30Ã,  $75Ã,  $200Ã,  $295Ã,  Ã,
1843OÃ,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  $35Ã,  Ã,  Ã, $65Ã,  Ã,  $125 $250$700$2,000Ã,  Ã,

The letters stand for Good, Very Good, Fine, Very Fine, Extra Fine, About Uncirculated, Proof

You can find grade guide here:

http://www.littletoncoin.com/grading_guide.htm

From my nonexpert opinion it seems like your coin is somewhere between Very Fine and Extra Fine thus depending on type it's worth anywhere between $17 and $ 75. If you are lucky in this case (which is unlikely but not impossible) it can be 1843O and then you could cash as much as $700. (I'm not sure about these dents on the rim, may turn it to Fine coin only)

Anyway, it has some price but ask an expert before you decide to sell it.

Hmm, interesting thread. I too have several coins, most from post-1900, not even sure where some of them are from, as i never got into it much. I have one from 1875, but it's so worm down I can barely see the year, it's practically become smooth to the touch. I'll take a phot of them and post it here in a bit, maybe you can tell me something about them. :)

edit: Btw, some of them are so dirty with I'm not sure what, culd be clay or something, that I can't get them clean. Is there anything commonly used to clean them that I might find around the house, without buying special cleaning material from the shopping channel?

In general it's safe to say you'll be best off with soap, water, towel, toothbrush and lots of patience.

For some tips look for example here:

http://mikewd.fws1.com/cleaning.html

Techniques vary depending on materials used, which means silver coins need to be cleaned in different way than for example copper ones.

This is Indian Head Penny, worth about $3 - $5 ($5 in VF condition) unless it has something extra, like double die (slightly doubled lines, imperfection caused during minting), then these can be worth up to $ 50. This photo is not detailed enough to say but it seems like it' s an ordinary piece so $ 5 max. Still 500 times more than it's nominal value though...

Not much more than value of the alloy, keep it as a curiosity. If you have a load of them, you can maybe sell it for a couple of bucks overseas only tho, tho since these are plentiful in Europe. Check this for reference:

http://www.epier.com/biddingform.asp?1017982

I have some Third Reich coins too and even big silver 1934 5 Reichmarks is not worth more than $7.

I used to collect pre WWII inflation German banknotes to use them as wall decorations. Heh, 10.000.000.000 Reichmarks anyone?

In my high school history book there were pictures of people burning those for warmth.
