Title: Competitions ideas
Post by: TheYak on Sun 25/05/2003 02:46:28
The competitions section lists game-making skills but the only comps related to that are the art and music comps.  I think the debate competition is a great idea, but is it actually relevant to AGS?  It'd be cool if we had a comp or two dedicated to solving a scripting problem or making the most creative script to do X.  It would probably also spawn a few nice game ideas.  Also on the game-making side, what about an SFX compo?  Many of us can't pretend to have any music skills but what about attempting to make the best sound effect for gunshots, shoes squeaking or an elephant choking on a duck?     Okay, these might be ridiculous ideas but merely suggestions after all.

I love the sound effects idea... I also think that there should be more competitions... Here are a few of my ideas...
1.) Write a working script that does (whatever)
2.) Create a single puzzle involing (Objects)
3.) Different forms of games (ex: anything other then adventure) using AGS

Just some other thoughts...

Do you know what would be a hard challenge?
Make a Strategy game with AGS.
Only the Scripting Gods survive!
Also, there could be challenges to make stuff like Platform Games or Arcade Games. Challenging stuff like that.

Thats what I was meaning, but there is a new form every "month" or whatever...

Educational games with AGS. The worst thing that could happen ever. Now that you put that idea into my head... "How to catch people and impale them on a stick". is the next game on my agenda.

I really like the single puzzle idea.  However, I think the Strategy/Arcade type stuff would fall under scripting challenges.  Remember, to have a competition you have to have a new one every week or two and it'll be easy to run out of ideas.  Just look what happened to Sprite Jam for awhile there.

You know, i don't think that's a bad idea at all. It would be challenging to create an educational game (about optional theme) without making it boring as hell.

I like the Scripting Idea. One way to keep it changing up all the the time would be to imitate a specific game. For instance, One time it could be a donkey kong styled game, next it could be a dig-dug type thing....

I think we need to check with CJ... It all really pends on him in the end...
