Computer trouble

Recently, my 2001 Gateway got this weird epidemic. It would load up, stay for like 10 seconds, and then restart again. I don't think its caused by a virus because it hasn't been connected to the internet for 3 years. The fact is, I have all my AGS stuff on there, plus some other important projects for school and DarkBASIC. My question is, can I use a USB cable to transfer files from my old computer to my new Dell?

by load up do you mean boot to windows with a cursor and everything?

Can you boot in safe mode?

Well as long as it's not anything wrong with the hard drive, you could always just plug that into the new computer.  But USB is actually pretty slow as far as data transfer goes.  At least once you start getting up into the GBs.  And I'm not really sure how you would manage the transfer with USB cables anyway unless you had some special equipment which I know nothing about.

If you have a new dell there is a built in Pc-to-Pc USB transfer wizard. I think you can access your old computer via the new over the USB and choose files. But thats only my speculation from what i have read. Otherwise, you could put stuff on disks to transfer.

i had a similar problem with a Win2k machine when i buggered the registry up after attempting to remove some adware, i couldn't even boot into safemode.
pulling the drive out, setting the jumper to the slave setting (so that your pc doesn't think you have two master drives and get confused about which one to boot the OS from) and shoving it in the new computer is probably the easiest way to get all the data back, you can also get USB thingers for housing IDE hard drives but the drive still has to be removed and re-configured first.

Can't boot in safe mode and loads up Windows ME with cursor and icons, then restarts 10 secs later.

I once had an error while doing scandisk that told me that my master drive had some serious errors and required replacement. I looked up the net to see if it was power problems (like a short or something) but I don't think it is.

I know about this but my computer doesn't stay on long enough to try this transfer. I don't want to transfer my AGS folder to my new comp and then have my old comp reboot and lose the transfer(wouldn't that happen?)

I don't know how to take out my hard drive. Sounds a little pathetic I know, but I've never had to do it and I really wasn't prepared for this. I don't have a manual for my computer either. :-\

I also have another question. Will I be able to transfer my shite when my old comp is just on? Like, I don't have to load up Windows? Thanks for the help so far! ;D

Could be the power supply. Or the RAM.

But to take out a HD, you need to open the side of the case (usually with a screwdriver). Unplug the ribbon cable and power cable from the drive. Unscrew the drive holder bay, and slide out the drive.

Most likely my RAM. I have 127 MB of VRAM on my old comp. Could barely play Warcraft II and Diablo II on the damn thing.

odd considering that the system specs for Warcraft II are a P60 with 16mb of ram, and specs for Diablo II are a P233 with 32mb ram...
i remember playing Warcraft II on a P133 with 12mb of ram just fine.
