New topic. I wanted to respond to the other thread by Yufster, but teh Gen Gen Gestapo reared their ugly heads (in the form of TEH LEKS!!).
I usually tie everything about human behavior I observe into reincarnation. I believe that most feminine gay men were girls in past lives and vice-versa. They are so accustomed to being female that now that they are male, they can't help it.
They would probably argue otherwise. Then again, some would argue against reincarnation completely. :P
I'm so glad you restarted this! I was just about to change the subject to cross breeding in animals. How come, for instance, the male sperm of a cow, can't impregnate the egg of a female human? I'm too lazy to find out
EDIT: That's not what I meant... ;D
I can always count on Yufster to bring a thread obscenely off-topic. Thanks. :)
You're welcome :)
Back to the topic of homosexuality, I am gay. :D No, not really, but I wish I was.
EDIT: Oh wait, I think reincarnation is cool! :)
EDIT 2 : That would also explain transvestites. And gay Octupus's
EDIT 3: I think it's probably a faulty gene thing, seeing as it actually seems to run in some families stronger than other families. That said, I don't see that it could be seen as a personality fault or mental illness. I've actually met people who view it as such, which I think is completely wrong and unjustified. Mostly, they are fundamentalist christians. Whom I generally disagree with on everything.
It's odd, because you would assume natural selection would have ruled out that particular faulty gene, if that was the case, over thousands of years.
EDIT 4: Here's a question: Why do gay lads usually have a great sense of humour, but lesbians don't?
That's a nice generalization without any scientific analysis or proof. ;)
on anecdotal evidence, many people would make the same generalisation in terms of gender, sexuality notwithstanding.
QuoteWell, here's another thing to discuss. Do you think some gay guys act femmy because they think they're supposed to?
Or could it be that straight guys act all butch because they are afraid of being perceived as gay? I think all gender specific mannerisms are social constructs. It's roleplaying. Openly gay men doesn't have to keep up this charade, so they behave in a gender-atypical manner. But often they go way too far in the opposite direction. No, limp wrists, lisping, and bitchy attitudes aren't genetically implanted in gay men any more than bad haircuts are in lesbians. They're stereotypes, but unfortunately many gays see them as role models.
Also, acting effeminate is a shorthand to communicate that you're gay. I remember when I came out, I got really limp wristed for a while and spoke in a very affected manner. But it's just a way to call attention to yourself. As you get more relaxed about it - and unless you become part of an all gay community - you will return to an if not butch then at least less effeminate manner.
As for the humor thing, I'm not even going to comment on it. But I must say I find Ellen as funny as The Kids in the Hall, and a lot less exhausting.

Cuz testoserone's a bitch!
It's true. Gay people have a fantastic sense of humour. They're also much wittier, sexier and smarter than straight people.
It's pointless to resist... you will succumb to our stronger will!
Mwuhahaha!
Erm... Ok... sorry. :) I'll get serious now.
But for some reason, now I have "Real Men" from Joe Jackson in my head and can't seem to lose it.
I don't think being gay is a genetic defect. For the same reason, you could say heterosexuality is a defect. True, there are more straight people than gay people, but it's all the same, really.
And about the very effeminate gay men, I think GarageGothic summed it up very nicely. It's a social construct. Perhaps they're rebelling against society in their quiet feminine ways?
I don't really know why they'd do it... I came out of said closet 5 years ago but never felt any desire to walk around limp wristed and lisp all day long.

i kno quite a few gay men and none of them are gay guy stereotypes, its funny really but the guy next door to us is that stereotype, and he's married with kids, well he's split with her but he has another girlfriend, then again she is quite butch and so was his ex!
lesbians don't have a sense of humour, gay guys seem to be able to brush off Innuendoes, but lesbians fly for the throat lol
or is that just the few i kno!
I think gay men seem to not care what people think. But lesbians still care about how people see them, because you see all these pornographic lesbian things, its seen as lesbians are associated with pr0n.
I hate it how all my friends make fun of gays. They see it as wierd. But I think they are cool. Way funny, too.
Will & Grace is a good example of the two extremes of male homosexual behavior. You have Jack, who is the dramatic type, somewhat affemininate, and with the light voice. Then there's Will, who I would never have suspected of being gay had I met him in the street. Hell, I didn't even realize he was gay until about the 4th episode I watched!
This is sort of a microcosm of the world. There are guys that you automatically pin-point as being gay due to their feminine behavior. Then there are those that, when they do come out of the closet, you are very shocked and would have never expected it.
I have to confess that whilst I am gay (and indeed, I have a lovely and startlingly camp boyfriend) I'm still pretty homophobic. Particularly when I get gay stuards on the train. It's the fingernails that piss me off. And eye-brow plucking! What's with that!!?!?!?!
Anyway, campness (limp wrists etc) is something I have observed as being kind of like accents. You spend a lot of time around people who act camp, and you start acting camp. Much as I don't like being seen as a gay man, instead of just a man, I'm always catching myself acting gaywise simply because I spent some time around "Beller" last night.
I think the most worrying thing about the great majority of homosexuals I know is a stunning propensity towards astounding shallowness. Sure, I've got loads of gay friends who are perfectly normal and sensible. But for every straight acting bloke ("straight acting" har har har. What a lovely and demening phrase) I meet, there are litterally swarms of pop-princesses milling about being GENUINLY concerned that someone else is waring the same trousers as them. Oh lordy lordy!
Finally, as a responce to Jimi:
Gay men are WAAAAAY more concerned about what people think of them than lesbians. It's just the people they're concerned about are different to the people normal folks are concerned about.
oh. so i was half right, at least. :)
What get's me is all these fundamentalist christians who condemn gays (they have a long, long list of condemned stuff, actually), and don't have much of a reason other than "In the BIBLE, it says THIS THAT AND THE OTHER."
I met a guy like that online, and he actually supported, SUPPORTED gay bashing. This guy (Who was straight) came online, and was pretty mad because a bunch of his friends, some of whom were gay, got beaten up because they were in the 'wrong side' of the town, and gay. So this wonderful FC puts in his two cents worth: "I can understand and sympathise with the gay bashers, I can see how they are angry with the gays"
WTF?!?? How do you sympathise with a group of guys that beat on people because of sexual preference!??? What reason do they have to be angry with people they've never even been in contact with before?! Unfortunately I thought it was a once off, but I've since met bunches of FC's with the same beliefs. I mean, does this anger anybody else besides me?
Being Athiest, I also get loads of "Conversions" tried on me. Usually by FC's. And they'll happily tell you that you're going to hell. That they can say an innocent man/woman can go to hell for being gay is absolutely insane. It's not holy at all. Even though I don't believe in Hell OR heaven :D
But, my point is, I think at the moment gays aren't viewed as equals in society and it's madness. There's the whole "Gay bishop" 'Scandal'... I mean, this guy is perfectly nice and open about his sexuality, how is it going to stop him being a perfectly good priest? Jesus ¬_¬
And there was another thing about Gays being given the right to marry... loads of people were outraged. WHY?!? >:(
At the moment gays aren't being treated very fairly, and it isn't right. And while they're giving gay people equal rights, they should review this bullshit about girls being made to wear skirts in catholic schools, too.
Gays are only hated because they insist on keep telling everyone about it and people are bored of it. If they just shut up about it and got on with life they would be ignored and no one would attempt to beat them up because no one cares about what you do in your own home.
I have no problems with gays it's just that they keep going on about it and it pisses people off.
They don't go on about it any more than straights go on about being straight. I mean when you're a guy sitting with a bunch of guys, talking about a girl, it's one thing. When you're a bunch of guys and one of you starts talking about another guy, it seems as though that's different?
I mean what, do gay guys come up to you on the street and tell you they're gay? And then give you a speech on heterosexuality? Gays don't "bother" anybody, and they do get on with life.
EDIT: No, I won't say that...

Take Frankie Howard for instance. He was gay but he didn't tell anyone or go out broadcasting it with a flag. So no one cared.
Why shouldn't they?
When groups of lads go out, don't they chat up girls and generally flirt?
So when Gay guys do that (Also bearing in mind that a small percentage of the population is gay, so they have less choice and it's harder for them to find a partner) it's not right then, no?
EDIT:
QuoteTake Frankie Howard for instance. He was gay but he didn't tell anyone or go out broadcasting it with a flag. So no one cared.
Why shouldn't he tell people? More likely he was ashamed to be gay because of the negative views held by some people. Which is pretty awful to have to feel that way. Saying that I don't actually know of him, so I could be wrong, but I do nonetheless know people who are ashamed to admit they're gay.
I think that people who harbor such dislike of homosexuals are themselves in a minority.
That said, I think this (http://www.theonion.com/onion3715/gay_pride_parade.html) is completely true.
Oh dear O_O
Quote"I have a cousin who's a gay, and he seemed like a decent enough guy to me," said Iowa City, IA, resident Russ Linder, in Los Angeles for a weekend sales seminar. "Now, thanks to this parade, I realize what a freak he's been all along. Gays are all sick, immoral perverts."
Ha, that's insane. What, a parade of 50 people represents the entire gay population of the world? Uhm, wake up you retarded.... Iowa city resident.
I mean, look at porn stars. There are a hell lot more porn stars than the amount of people in that parade. And the average straight male watches a hell of a lot of porn, and a vast percentage of females too. Does that mean the entire human race is a twisted ballad of sexual deviation and taboo? Okay so they shouldn't have paraded it like that... That was just wrong. But I mean, 50 people out of... millions, don't represent Gays, just like 50 porn stars out of millions of people, don't represent mankind.
Although I bet you wish they did :P
It's the Onion, Yufster. It's called satire.
Andddd now I feel retarded.
I knew that name sounded familiar.
Yeah, it's fake, but what makes the article a classic is that it has a rather true message-- embracing those campy stereotypes is little more than self-ostracizing. Gay means you attracted to those in you're own gender. It doesn't mean that you have to act like the opposite gender, or like a flamboyant sexual deviant. Those are stereotypes, and if those stereotypes had never existed in the first place, then homosexuals would be almost completely accepted today.
My point exactly.
The fact they are nothing but stereotypes, and there isn't 10% of the population that acts like that, is what leads many to not believe the 10% estimate.
On the subject of that Gay Bishop, can I just say:
Rowan Williams is totally l33t (to use the local parlence)
I was a fan of his when he was arch Bish of Wales (he confirmed me you know!) and he's the best thing to happen to the C.O.E for about 2003 years.
He's just such a NICE man, AND CLEVER!!!! What kind of crazy cmbination of things is that to occur in a religious thingamybob?!?!?!
I'd like to bring up the point the Cap'n made about hanging out with people and picking up their manerisms.
I am basically the antithesis of the italian stereotype, but I do have friends who are practically straight out of the mob movies, and when I hang out with them I always find myself acting like them afterwards.
Thank god it wears off.
So yeah. I agree with that.
I just wish gaits worked like that.
I have a friend called Gregg (who I once saw in some porn!!! He claims it wasn't him, but we all know better) with a particularly dapper gait, and I REALLY wish it'd rub off on me... oh well...
Gregg Berlanti? :)
But seriously, I've refrained from asking this question for fear of looking stupid, but I'm giving up...
...what's a gait?
I'm Dutch and can't find my dictionary at the moment, so that's *my* excuse, what's yours? ;)
A gait is a slang term for genitals, and he wants it to "rub off"... hmmm!
j/k!
Your gait is the way you walk.
You had me there, for a moment... :)
I love the word gait. Although it's quite hard to use it when speaking, as everyone assumes you mean gate. BAH!
