Cool Edit Pro is now Adobe Audition

Hmm. More and more, we're seeing small time companies being eaten up by the big boys. Snytrillium was devored by Adobe. I discovered this as I was looking for Cool Edit to download and use to clean up a sound file. Try visiting http://www.syntrillium.com .

This reminds me of when Access Software (makers of the Tex Murphy games) was devoured by Micro$oft. When will it end? When??? Oh, the humanity!

Humanity?  Pshaw, that was devoured ages ago.  Now it's all robots and monkeys.

Meh, I don't really have much against Adobe, but I don't like seeing small companies disected.

They weren't "devored". Syntrilllium happily agreed to join Adobe.

As proof, Bob Ellison, president of Syntrillium, didn't express much sadness about being "devored" when he said:

"Cool Edit Pro has won recognition across the music and video industries, and by teaming up with Adobe we will be able to bring this complete multi-track recording application to an expanded set of customers. Introducing Cool Edit Pro into the Adobe family is great news for our customers, who will benefit from the company's complementary product line and commitment to delivering high quality products."

Adobe acquired Syntrillium without any grudge. And why should there be a grudge? The deal was just as good for Syntrillium as it was for Adobe.

I know, I know, I was only joking around. But think about it...Adobe wants to release an audio editing program. Basically, instead of making one themselves (like they did with Photoshop, and a fine job they did too), they buy another company's program, and the company along with it. :P Not a bad deal. ;)

Yeah, I heard. Adobe Audition is pretty cool, though. Underrated for such a powerful piece of software.

I have Cool Edit Pro. Don't really use it because I also have Sound Forge.

But that's the thing: why bother going to the trouble of developing audio software that'll possibly be mediocore compared to CoolEdit, when instead you have the chance to buy CoolEdit?

But it's Adobe! I'm sure that if they put their collective minds to it, they could make a superior product. I haven't tried out Audition yet, but I'm sure that Adobe would've made a better product than a smaller company like Syntrillium. :)

I use cool edit pro/audition quite a lot, I only upgraded to audition quite recently, but I can't find anything useful audition does that cool-edit didn't.Ã,  Well, I can use it to burn cd's now, and edit video sound tracks, but that really just means extra buttons I won't use. Any features they've added seem pretty half-assed to me. But then, I'm no expert.

Some good has come out of it actually; I don't feel guilty 'borrowing' software via Kazaa if it's by Adobe, while I do when it's a smaller company like Syntrillium.

Yeah. Never have I felt guilty about ripping $10,000 software from Adobe. I mean, God do they over-charge for software. Even Audition... $150+ if you're UPGRADING! Did CEP ever cost that much as a standalone program?

I'm sure they could too. But that's a risk. And they have to develop it too, and that costs money.

I'm sure Adobe worked out which was the more profitable option. And you can't really fault them for that. After all, Adobe employees have got to eat.

Oh no, I don't fault them for that. I applaud this. Thing is, they didn't really improve it or alter it at all. It's like seeing CoolEdit Pro with the intro voice saying "Adobe Audition" and the Adobe splash screen tacked onto the beginning. :P

I'm just poking fun at the whole situation. It was a good move and I'm very sure Adobe will do good things with Audition.

Let the Adobe employees starve! ;)

SSH

Or you could use Audacity and let Adobe employees starve LEGALLY!

In the industry I work in the typical R&D model for the largest companies works like this:

1. Some of the employees of one of the top 3 companies have an idea about how to do the product better
2. They leave the company and make a start-up that implements their idea
3. Their compelling improvement in quality of results mean that one of the big three buys them up, giving lots of money to shareholders (including the guys who had the ideas)
4. Some of the employees of what is now part of one of the top 3 companies have an idea about how to do the product better...

In the company I work for's 15-or-so year history, it has made around 100 acquisitions, I believe. It is number one in revenue in the sector. The number 2 company has made a similar number of acquisitions...

What the hell?
Anyway, I used the trial version of Cool Edit, it was allright, but I wanted more, MORE! But I would never buy this.

You can purchase Adobe Audition 1.5 for just $299.
JUST 299! You guys are rich.

The big problem I have with Audition, as opposed to Cool Edit is that the way they handle the trial version is different. Back when I used to use Cool Edit (95, I think), the trial never expired, but only allowed you to have two 'features' unlocked at once. It was something of a pain if there were lots of things that you wanted to do at once, especially considering that Saving was one of the options listed, but I prefer inconvenience to a time limit on a program where you may only want to do one thing at once, and the program itself loaded in mere seconds, so it wasn't much of a hassle.

When I first started using Flash, I had the 30 day limit expire just before I really had decided whether I liked the program enough to buy or not (And at the price of most major softwares like that, that's a decision you don't want to rush, unless you have money flowing from your nose and other assorted orifices). Fortunately, I upgraded to a new computer shortly thereafter and installed the trial once again so that I could really get into it.

I understand the whole mentality behind fully-functional 30-day trials, it gives you plenty of time to form habits and what-have-you, and in the case of something like flash where quitting and reloading a file to do something different would become tedious and much more work than it's worth, but I'll often install a program, use it for a while, get sidetracked or busy with school and life otherwise, then when I go back to the 'still new' program that I've been fiddling with, it turns out that it's already expired and I can no longer use it. I've been turned off of more than one piece of software that way.

I have yet to try Audition, though I'll probably download the trial soon, once I have created enough music to want to master an entire album within my time limit, but I'm not particularly fond of Adobe's products as it is, the learning curve is often somewhat too steep for me, and Photoshop is a resource hog to the nth degree - even lite. If it didn't come with my Wacom, I probably wouldn't use it at all.
