Well, I've always liked those little movies before games. What's your most favourite ones?
Best ones I always watch (always!) and never skip are
Battlefield 2 intro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-T3U5-3G28&feature=related)
(This orchestral hit at beginning and end gives me shivers and pumps up for game!)
Knights of Honor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JR5ojDj-9UM)
This one got some awards. I clearly see why.
Best. Thing. Ever. 300W subwoofer helps the experience and gives neighbors their share, too ;D
There's some more I can't recall right now.
What's yours?
Spoiler
In BIOSHOCK when the plane falls into the ocean and then when you resurface you are surrounded by debris and a plane that is slowly sinking into the ocean and you can see the giant tower that leads to RAPTURE!!
When Master Chief awakens in Halo. It wasn't a big deal then, but now it's practicaly legend!
Watch the intro to Dead Rising..that was really cool.
Just wait at the start screen for a couple of minutes and it will play. It was creepy.
some old games have great intros, like Fury of the Furries, Syndicate, Flashback, and the original pc version of Worms. and then you had great intro songs like in Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder.
i couldn't really name a game i've played recently with an intro i've paid much attention to.
I've always loved the intro to DOTT.
Mine is definately the intro of Little Big Adventure 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hy6Kb_MAdo). It's simply beautiful!
Must agree with DOTT, excellent classic intro :D
I used to like the Privateer intro, and the line "besides, im on a budget" *BOOM*
I also use to like the Ultima 8, Pagan intro, as short as it is.
My favorite classic intro tho has to be Dune.
Not the Floppy version, the re-release on CD-Rom.
And of course, we cant forget Zero Wing.
Well, the intro is relitivly boring, but the classic "All your bases are belong to us" line comes from there :D
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/52/AllYourBaseAnimated.gif)
Gobliiins.
Loom.
Full Throttle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzEWGaqdtcg).
Definitely the homeworld 1 mothership launch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrW4jkQdmjI)
Well I liked the Zak MacKracken intro. But as the best of them, I must say the intro from The Settlers.

Gah, I knew someone would say that...
Also, Zero Wing is hilarious. Nobody could ever make a game like that successfully...
I always loved The Dig's intro (especially if you include the asteroid scene as part of it)
Also, the Fahrenheit intro is awe-inspiring. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l90ax6JdRbU&feature=related) Watch it!
Breakdown for the Xbox. Just find a video on youtube. :)
GUYS. Grim Fandango?
ALSO: not really the same as it has no cut-scenes or movies or the like, but the first 10 mins or so of Half Life 2 are good. Especially when you get out of the station and into the town squarey type bit. Epic.
I somehow like The Civilization (yep, the once the bestest game ever game).
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance intro is awesome.
Also, in case it counts, the first fight in Beyond Good and Evil is nice in the middle, when the game goes into slow-mo simultaneously with the music changing.
Gotta agree with Radiant about Loom.
However it's not my favorite "best" intro...
That distinction (for me) goes to Wing Commander II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfAoVX_VWWs). When the Kilrathi gets up and WALKS over and they the SPEAK to each-other. It was the first time I'd seen full motion and speech together and it was just mind-blowing! I will never forget the feeling when I first saw that. We used to just stop the game, and reload so we could watch that over and over. Of course, now-a-days that's nothing ... but back then it was incredible!
As for a more modern game ... yeah, I'd agree with veryweirdguy that Half Life 2's intro is great! (though only the first time I played it 'cause you can't skip it and it's annoying past then) Talk about a great intro that pulls you into the game! Total immersion!
Interesting to see the wide gambit of differing opinions here!
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay. Just fantastic! :o
Definitely Apidya (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3gIjMm2P-g) and Turrican II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fvha_2hAzq0) !!!
These intros may be a little cheesy, outdated, but Chris Huelsbeck's music are unforgettable.
I'd like to change my answer: the intro to Shadow of the Collosus. I just started playing it again and I absolutely love that game!
Discworld 2 (http://"http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6TBxjNfYLMk").
Partly because it was my very first adventure game, partly because it really is great, for real.
And yeah, lots of others too, as well.
Well, it's just an AGS game, but I never laughed harder than when I watched the intro to the first Barn Runner. Classic.
I mean, it seems tame now - but the NES version of Ninja Gaiden.... it had this cool opening scene with Ninja's dueling. At the time, I thought it was the coolest thing.
Bt
Zmobies naturally. And Zak McCracken and the alien mindbenders. I loved the intro music. I also loved the intro music in No Exit for the amiga.

Seconded. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rkaiKYEkDQ)
On NES, there was many cool intros.
I also liked very much...
Robocop 3
Power Blade 2

+1
Seriously, that was the most beautiful and movie-like intro I had ever seen on my Amiga 500. I positively drooled, the sci-fi loving early teen nerd I was. Never got very far in the game though.
How about Half-Life 1? Not just the train wagon thing, but even further ahead, and especially when everything went crazy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sqT6TulFk4). It was the best intro I've ever seen.
yeh, it really was great being able to 'interact' with the intro so to speak, it made the whole intro experience more personal because you're not just watching a video, and it made for a more enjoyable almost movie like playing experience as movies often do have their own little intros of sorts which sets the movie up.
it's a shame that the half-life 2 introduction wasn't as long as intended.
Cheesy as it is, I always loved the intro for Deathtrap Dungeon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbRcYd8lX18).
Intros and outros rule. Too hard to name one for me :-\ Too many stand out as being fantastic!!! For the console I like the original Halo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NGF3CVNbxk) intro...the graphics were a bit crude but it brought back starship trooper memories, hehe. I think it was the spacey choral music getting me in the mood too, a bit like The Dig intro (kudos bill tiller!) does which is probably my favourite intro of all adventure games. I do love the DOTT intro too, but it was just a bit too zany for me when I was a kid & didn't have the same impact as a lot of other game intros. For me it's the earlier game intros/outros etc that stand out for me. Can't say I've played many of the games everyone else has listed though, but i definitely agree with LBA2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7MTg4AqsxU). When I first watched/played that it was a very good feeling! As was Fate of Atlantis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ET_98IcvoTI), I still like the intro, but it'll never have the same impact it did for the first time as a young Indy fan back in the 90's. That early generation of 3D (mostly rendered) intros and stuff was cool, I liked Theme Park (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eb_sS2rEvE)'s intro a lot lol & Kingdom O Magic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB6qPSMeWNc), but never got to play more than the demo of that! DD2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpwgshxTS9E) was the first computer game I ever bought & that intro really inspired me for quite a long time. The number of crap QB racing games I tried to make after that lol!!! ::) Anyway I generally like rendered intros rather than ones that harness the 3D engine itself. I liked Grim Fandango for that reason, I thought they'd go overboard on relying on the 3d characters but they rendered a lot of the cut-scenes very nicely! For a cheap sim game I enjoyed the Operation Genesis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Chuc3SyndLs) intro. Anyway, I don't think any of my intros necessarily count as the "coolest" in any sense hehe just old time favourites :) Another great intro is this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuYrRebvFHc)... LOL

BaRoN, you
absolutely made my day, dude! Thanks so much!
My favorite opening remains Full Throttle, which, by the way, is probably my favorite adventure game ever. Also, it's the only adventure game that I've played more than twice. That certainly explains why my Barn Runner games are (especially in later chapters) are heavy on cutscenes and fairly easy in the puzzle department.
Close runner up, the very moody opening to the first Gabriel Knight. Loved the poem and how it was expanded as the game went on.
- Ponch
Heh, I have to add that the first Barn Runner's has to be one of my favourites as well. I've actually tried replicating the technique of the out loud thinking from this game in real life, to much hilarity (on my part) and much confusion (on everyone else's).
;D
I second Beyond Good and Evil. Here's a nine-and-a-half minute Youtube link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY_Dz4vLrMk), but if anyone's interested they should download the demo. It's got a lot of things going for it but the interactive sections really make it.
Empire Earth II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nsXOluY8Ew) is nice and epic. Good tone setter.
Oh yeah, and I know the Sam and Max intro pretty much word for word (here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yWnnk9fyJE), if anyone needs a link). That's pretty funny.
Theme Hospital (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wguJKz2md3Y) anyone?
A few shocking intros that come to mind.
Carmageddon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyWFX0FPhOA)
Sam & Max Hit the Road (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yWnnk9fyJE)
Hell: a Cyberpunk Thriller (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8-dipscKg4)
Quarantine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTI7HYbksfQ)
M.A.X. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0n5JQ0jpgM)
Shadow of the Comet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96Jb3SAH3R0)
Sam and Max: Hit the road (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yWnnk9fyJE)
I laughed a lot with this one ^^
Full Throttle and DOTT intro are amazing too ;D
As for Farenheit I loved the way the intro immerse the player, the soundtrack is great.
(I'm still playing this one on ps2..)

I may get pummeled to custard for this, but nonetheless:
Is that what the voices sounded like? For realsies? I never played it with sound and thus only know the voices from the newer games. Max seems so much more......human? than I would expect. It's odd.
Good intro though.

Good intro though.
I bought it in French so I couldn't help with english voices,
the french acting voices were amazing tho ;D
yeah, the Sam N Max one was amazing ;D
I also like the Tomb Raider 2 intro. Tomb Raider 2 being the first game I played on my computer, the intro is somehow special to me. It left me speechless with its FMVs. I was amazed at the graphics I saw, not knowing that in the future I'd see games with better graphics, in-game.
For the same reason, I adored the intro of FF7,the second game I bought for my computer.
Resident Evil 1 for PSX. It's cheesy, but it's cool. :)
Final Fantasy VII Had a great intro too. The music is great.
Oh, c'mon, I can't believe no one's posted I.M. Meen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekkk8sVajqE) yet.
Sam & Max and Half-Life's intros were pretty great also.
I like a good CG intro. The Playstation really introduced me to the concept. FF7, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil 2, etc.
Even cheesy ones:
Danger Girl (PSX) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZNnaPkLhFU)
I still have that game! :D

Sigh. Much like the old cartoons I loved as a kid, that game intro held up so much better
in my mind.
Stupid memory! Remembering things rendered with so many more imagined polygons than there ever were in real life! Way to let me down, brain cells! Makes me afraid to sift through YouTube for the old N64 Shadows of the Empire.

Hahahah! I actually have that game, and while I never finished it (something along the lines of 120 levels?!) it was the most hilarious thing ever. I can't believe someone else still remembers that.
Magic Carpet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WzhJ9tPeEo)
Was supposed to be the longest ever game intro at the time or something too!
(but holy cow! How that 3D rendering has dated!)
