Title: Cosplay tips
Post by: Tuomas on Mon 10/11/2008 21:43:43
Hi. I finally convinced my girlfriend to try on some suits. well, actually it was her idea, and she got excited, because she's pretty handy with clothing and all that, always fixing my pants and jackets that have holes in them from crawling around the playground.

Anyway, she said, that she didn't know any anime/manga to copy, and she thought she'd want my opinion before making the outfits for herself. Also, she didn't know, if there was more to cosplaying than just dressing up. I told it was ok just to wear stuff, no need to LARP etc :) But frankly, I only ever watched Urusei Yatsura, Love Hina, Pokemon and didn't read any, so I'm not the best to suggest stuff. And I promised her links to pictures. So I was wondering if any of you could help me finding clothes probably suitable for a long haired blonde with a nice figure. Oh, and she also said there's no limit to the shortness of the skirt ;) Oh, and she said she'd make some for me too, so I should start imagining myself as a mangaboy :D

\^_^/

Amazingly popular. A Cosplay evergreen, you could say.

Here's (http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=N61lK_RnX40&feature=related) the "How Not To Do It" version...

Dude that's like upskirt... In fact I don't even think that is a skirt, it's more like a rag attached to a leotard haha.

The Melancholy of Harui Forgetthelastname.

Suzumiya. But no one in there is blonde, so she'd need a wig, at least.

Does it have to be anime? Here are all the blonde anime females I know (besides Sailor Moon):
- Belldandy from Oh! My Goddess (pic (http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/2933/26megamisamasmkq7.jpg))
- Mireille Bouquet from Noir (pic (http://apike.ca/images/anime/noir/noirteamshot.jpg))
- Misa Amane from Death Note (pic (http://myanimelist.net/character.php?id=835))
- Julia from Cowboy Bebop (pic (http://myanimelist.net/character.php?id=2735) - another pic (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1044/702756831_d88d95a4f5.jpg?v=0))

If you're willing to consider game characters:
- Trish from Devil May Cry (pic (http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/devilmaycry/images/thumb/a/ae/Trish0.jpg/250px-Trish0.jpg))
- Rikku from Final Fantasy X and X-2 (two versions of her costume - FFX-2 (http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/6902/rikku2rk2.png) and FFX (http://www.geocities.com/amethyst_pagan/rikku.jpg))

These are all I can think of for now. If your girlfriend is planning to wear her costume to any conventions though, she should at least read up on the characters before she does something totally out of character! But if it's just for fun, then no reason to go to all the trouble :)

..and i've heard the word for the first time. I guess it's coming from playing with costumes..?

Larping is way more fun than cosplaying in the end. Unless you're hopeless with anything else than making costumes. But then again, in cosplay competitions you need to know the character too, if you're going to take it that far.

Fixed, thanks. That's what you get for not checking back on your own posts.

Oh, and there's Quistis from FF8! How could I forget her? :) There are a couple costumes of her your girlfriend might want to try.

Oh, and if your girlfriend is ok with not-so-animeish type characters, she can try Eva from MGS3 or Lisa from Silent Hill... characters like that. Might be easier to pull off the look... some of those anime costumes are really intricate.

Escapism?

Considering the group that you're asking, I think the only acceptable choice would be to have your girlfriend dress up as Rosella, and you dress up as the dude from this post:

And make note of the amount of people who guess you are the same character.

I'm pretty much with Pesty here on this one, cosplay is weird. I'm all for certain types of larping, but running around the woods throwing pine cones or dice at each other, or dressing up as cartoon characters just for the sake of dressing up as one are not my cup of tea.

How can guys appreciating chicks who like to dress up in skimpy outfits be classed as 'gay'?
Some might consider it a bit sad... but then again some people consider making your own adventure games to be a bit sad... it all depends on the person doing the judging and those being judged should be left alone to do what the hell they want.

The guy who judged was a robot who can't understand human's nature at all.

By the way, is there something weird going on I didn't know of yet? It seems the robots are taking over all the news shows and broadcastings. Is it their plan to brainwash the viewers in order to secretly plan to overthrow the government and enslave mankind?

I can't control what the robot media choose to report. For example:

If someone finds it fun making clothes, who am I to blame them. If someone likes dressing up, who am I to blame. In my book they're not at all weird. People have had masquerades as long as I can think back. See phantom of the opera for example god damnit!

Masquerade != cosplay.

A real masquerade would be fun to attend, I think.

The credentials of people claiming to represent the robot media have yet to be established, and facts regarding their "official" status are sketchy at best. >:(

As to cosplay, what's the harm? Would I personally dress up like, say, Dante from Devil May Cry? If I could find my abs without the aid of a scalpel and an ice-cream scoop, sure I would. Maybe not in public, but I'd spend a few hours flexing in front of a mirror.

I don't know what drives grown men to dress up as Hello Kitty, but if it makes them happy then I'm not going to stop them.

Unless it's to lure children into their gingerbread house. Then I would stop them.
