A game in 17th century Poland

I've come with this idea recently. Why not make a game set in Poland of 17th century? A country witch was considered a super power right then, having almost one million square kilometres of territory, almost constant wars on the east frontier. 8 million pop of which 1 million was nobility having priviledges and actually ruling the country more than the king himself. The nobles were warrior-like, courageous and took care for their honor. Sabre duels and sieges of neighbouring nobles were common. And the law won seldom.

I thought of making a game where you could be a Polish noble and while doing some 'quest you would see how it was in that country of this specific age. What do you think about that?

I think your post is almost useless. OK,you chose a rather interesting setting for a game. But what next? Not even slightest hints of storyline? So all I can say is go ahead, start working on your game and come back when you have something to discuss about.

Jaz,  that was a bit harsh.

I'd like to see this idea flushed out a bit more, I think you've touched on something quite interesting.  I'm a fan of historical setting game (WW II being my favorite)  Would this be a Point and click adventure type game?  or maybe something 3d? there are lots of ways you could go with this, keep the ideas flowing!

OK I do apologise for it might have sounded a bit harsh but it was also due to limited lenght of post my cellphone browser enables.

First off, the setting is good and offers a wide variety of opportunities for an interesting story. The end of middle ages and onset of modern times was truly a turbulent period, when the whole nature of economy and government changed, especially in Central and Eastern Europe. Nobility and towns gaining strength and political power. "You are our king and we are your lords" was also what the noblemen used to say...

First half of 17th. century was also time of Thirty Years War, the most damaging of all European wars ever speaking in terms of percentual population loss.

Yes, it's  I can see broad field of possibilities and I would definately like to see a game from this period. But still the first post carried roughly as much information as one  like "hey man, how about to make a game set in medieval Japan, it was cool back there".

So here goes my conclusion: the idea is very interesting but try to play with it for a while, try to elaborate more. Will it be a story of one of the noblemen who discovered other noblemen's plot against king and tries to save his life and the whole kingdom? Or something else? Work on it and we all will look forward to what you'll come up with.

I know that I've probably hastened a bit giving you something really general, but I just wanted to ask you what you think about the idea of a setting and it's potential.

As to any more info I thought on a character being a Polish noble from southern Poland in a year of some major historical event in the country. He would meet some historical figures and get involved in a major plot. One of my ideas is to give player a choice - he may stand against the law and order thus becoming an infamous outlaw or act on behalf of law/the king. The choice would alter the gameplay greatly (and would extend the making process very much but I think it would be worth it). I do not have a story yet. I'm just making general assumptions.

My major conception was like showing the people what Poland looked like in it's glorious days by making an interesting adventure game. Don't imagine me as a patriotic buffoon. I just think that's something worth showing.

Blade, my dear compatriot, the idea is very nice.
You seem to be fond of Sienkiewicz...
Once you're interested in the historical subject, you might get some funds from Ministerstwo Kultury or even sell it to one of those educational magazines - provided there's no copyrighted material in your game. Of course, you'd have to make a Polish version, but there shouldn't be any problems with that, no?

Blade

A beautiful idea my dear Goldmund  ;D Well, I have respect for Sienkiewicz and I have respect for history. I'm not planning to rip from Sienkiewicz so there are no trademarks :P And no, there shouldn't be any problem with Polish version. The problems are: time, graphic and scripting skills, good plot (that's fairly the easiest) and inner strength to work through the bureaucracy for getting Secretary's of Culture interest and help.
It's looooong way to completing the thing I'm writing about.
