Asking about rebuiling... how true is that nyth that you Yankees build mainly with wood? That is, if true... risky!

Not true.  I live on Long Island, right by New York City.  Mostly just concrete and steel with brick patterns or something on the outside.  There are tons of badass looking buildings here, but not mostly out of wood.  The suburban homes, wood and plaster.  Not very risky, considering the fact that all the wood has the plaster covering it as well as paint and all that.  The only fire risk is if something on the inside burns, not the walls.  And we don't get many hurricanes in NY, and when we do, we don't even lose the power.

Kweepa

It IS true.
New house frames in the southern US (at least) are wood. The sidings can be brick veneer, plaster or wood.
I've seen several apartment complex fires here in Austin.

In the UK, new houses are built of brick.

There may be some temperature related reason for the difference but I think it's just that people are used to one or the other.

There's starting to be alot more steel buildings in NY, but NY is all I really know about... so I'm just going to pretend I know what I'm talking about for the northern reigon of the US  :P

I'm about to be smacked by a LONGWANG!!!

Sorry, I really just wanted to say that.

It's time for our weekly typhoon here in Okinawa, and I was checking the latest forecasts and noticed that this week's typhoon is named "Longwang."  I don't know what system they use to name them 'round here, but it's definitely better than the Hurricane naming system.

You can see live sattelite imagery of me being smacked by the Longwang here. Just check under the West Pacific section.

Kweepa

Heh. Sounds like they take names from A Fistful of Yen.

Well I'd like to thank everyone for their well-wishing.  I fared fairly well, with only minor structural damage to the outside of my house, a barn which fell about 30% over, and a tree that of about 100 feet, 30 snapped off the top.

As for the "minor structural damage," some of the plastic siding along the underside of my roof got ripped off.  It's cheap crap anyway.

The barn had one of its supports lifted up out of its base causing it to fall over, on top of my dad's boat.  It was a crappy boat anyway.  Not that it actually did any damage...just saying.

The tree was kind of scary because I had stepped outside Friday night to use the bathroom a few times (I forgot to mention we lost power about 10:30 P.M.) and it was getting blown around pretty hard.  It shook me up just a bit seeing 30 feet of tree hanging 70 feet in the air running parallel to the rest of the tree.

Other than that we lost power, like I said, but we're doing all right.  My two younger sisters are at my grandmother's house for now (since Sunday).  And we have a small generator so we can run the well (living out in the sticks we don't have city water), a few fans, and the refrigerator.  But it's terrible on gas.

Things are going to crap all around the world.  I just wish the best of luck to everyone who...is alive right now.  And to those who are dead too.  It's not much fun be dead right now.  I wouldn't know but I don't imagine it would be fun.  I can't see how it would be.  I don't imagine it's much worse than being alive though.  Being alive is a pretty terrible thing to be doing these days.

Please don't kill yourself because of this nonsense. :=

Gee, with that outlook on life, why don't you run the suicide hotline?

Well...I've become sort of desensitized toward everything seeing as the girl that I love more than life itself is trying to break up with me I think...I'm not sure.  She's not really sure either.  She has no idea what she wants.  And

"I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking...maybe six feet...ain't so far now..."

:=

Well...I just hope I can do something.  Running away doesn't sound too fun, but it's worth it if I can save our relationship as the long-distance is half the problem... :o

I should stop talking.  I'm starting to sound like some sort of depressed freak*. :D

* No offense to the depressed or the self-declared freaks. ;)

I've been through it before ... trust me when I tell you, it's definitely not worth hurting/killing yourself over.

Though I do like the Creed reference.

I know it seems like the world is caving in on you, but believe me, years from now you'll think it was silly to feel that way.

Hang in there.

Well seeing as I'm on a month long vacation from school due to lack of power due to Hurricane Rita, running away seems a perfectly logical thing to do.  It's only 3 thousand miles (:=).  Well...a little more.  Is that too far to hitchhike in a month to see a girl?  Probably not.  Thanks for the advice Darth. ;D

Actually I probably won't.  But the way my (STEP)dad is acting lately... :o
