Title: Culture shock!
Post by: on Tue 15/05/2007 01:05:52
I'm just wondering what things people have done lately to "get cultured" and stuff? ;) As my dad would say I had a dose of culture at the weekend just gone. It was a Shakespeare day for me, visiting his birthplace, Stratford Upon Avon - to see a performance of King Lear. Although I didn't visit Shakespeare's actual birthplace in the town, I did visit Shakespeares Starbucks and enjoyed a Shakespearean cup of Latté. At the Shakespearean price of £3.65.

King Lear was intense. Especially when you have a smokers cough, and you're in the third row from the front. And especially when you don't really want to be distracting the likes of Sir Ian McKellin (Gandalf...or my personal favourite..DEATH IN LAST ACTION HERO!!1), Sylvester Macoy (Dr Who), Will Gaunt (dunno) & Jonathon Hyde (Jumanji's Van Pelt!)... LOL. I even saw Ian McKellins penis. So I think I was more than cultured that day.

So, what have other people done that is considered culture, lately? :)

Seen Gandalf's cock?

Bet ya haven't :P

Stratford Upon Avon is the biggest tourist trap ever.  I ate at the Shakespearean McDonald's, where we had a Big Mac"beth".

Erm, I just bought tickets to see Pink Martini (http://www.pinkmartini.com) next month, that maybe counts O_o. Their last album featured 14 songs in 6 languages

"Part French cabaret and part Hollywood musical, this stylish 12-piece orchestra plays a wildly eclectic musical mix that falls somewhere between a 1930s Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brazilian marching band, and Japanese film noir. Get ready to stir things up with this ultra-chic ensemble."

No?

Aside from that, I visited England, Wales, Scotland, France and Spain last summer and witnessed some culturey things.

I lived in a Mexican orphanage for a week in April.  Played with the kids, did construction, and bought a hammock.

Can't get more culture than that.

This is moving into "Which cultural theme park I visited lately". And I think m0ds is asking about what do we do to improve our culture. I am allways reading a book. Not the same book... When I finish one, I pass to another. I like historical books, and sometimes some scientific book, like history of time and (I didn' t get a word) Einstein' s theory of relativity.

I am a smart ass.

[Igm] : Sure it does.  8)

I'm always read a book too, but not the same than Nacho... (Reading C. Jones AGS manual lately, I enjoyed even if the ending was somewhat predictable).
Spoiler
A brace-ending, what are you thinking?

See a local performance of Moliere's Scapin last week-end, college stuff but still good; Riding museums; Do the same than Igm once in a while, but without paying; I'm Having fun on Wikipedia too.  And now, I'm looking forward to see the 'Body World' exhibit who finally came in Montreal.

Never have the luck of seeing any Shakepspear Shakespeare, but I'm not into adult experimental theater, like m0ds seen to like it :P

Well, Liverpool is the 2008 Capital of Culture. I should get some culture points just for being here, right? 'Cause otherwise, I've got nothing unless you count an umpteenth reading of Hitchhiker's Guide. I saw a bit a Shakespeare when I was younger - Midsummer Night's Dream and a ballet version of Romeo and Juiliet, and I was almost in a school production of MacBeth - but I think any culturefying has worn off by now.

Lol, one of my friends was working in a really rural part of wales the other month and no one would sell him cigarettes, They said they couldn't understand him but all the signs were in English. he eventually stormed out of the shop after yelling "How many languages can i say Lambet and Butler in?!?". I also have another friend at uni in cardif though and he's had no problems.

I haven't done a lot of cultural stuff lately.

Although I have to say Stratford upon Avon was a pleasant experience for me. I was there one year ago, and the weather was wonderful and everyone was happy. The play we saw was so-and-so, but the weather was great!

Real actors, as opposed to cardboard models? You must have paid a fortune.

Congrabulations!

I once screamed at one of the actors during a theatre performance. I don't know about culture, but there was definitely a large amount of shock involved.

well, much...

I've just finished authoring a DVD about monks, and another DVD about Hitler in the same week!

I don't know if that's cultured (They had subtitles...), but seeing Ava Braun run off with Hitler's shoes was a bit of a shock.

[shameless_blog_ad] There are more photos of Çanakkale (and Troy) here: http://asiridozyanilsama.blogspot.com/2007/05/anakkaleden-resimler.html [/shameless_blog_ad]

And also I was in theater about one month ago. Fortunataly; some unfortunate events, I had to have 2 years ago, did not occur this time  (reminding something funny just in the beginning of the play and distracting the actors as I was barely be able to help my cracking).  (But the thing I remembered was really funny at that moment!)

Hmm, define "cultured"

Why a cultured man needs to visit Shakespears birthplace? Visit an interesting museum or galery instead, I believe its much more fun.

I just read Ben. Jonson's 'Volpone'. Elizabethan drama is pretty cultured. On the other hand, I'm probably going to see Spiderman 3 this evening. I suppose that cancels it out...

I'm one of those assholes who suspects the author of the plays and the man from Stratford aren't the same guy.  :(    Probably multiple folks credited as one guy.   But we'll never know.   Most of the "facts" historians cite are snippets they infer from the plays.  That the stratford man MUST have stayed in Italy based on his knowledge of Italian culture etc.   But there are no documents or otherwise beyond a will and some deeds.   And the guy who filled them out appears to be rather dull... and illiterate.

I have a book sitting next to me called "Players: The Mysterious Identity of William Shakespeare"  If not the book itself, I suggest the argument.   Its a fascinating topic.   Atheists could get into it for sure.

There's a little culture shock for you   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakespearean_authorship_question

Interesting belief Evenwolf, I know there's debate about plays like King Lear where Will apparently took inspiration from an earlier play called King Lier...so who knows exactly what he she them or "it" were up too :p Even so, if it brings fine actors and other A List celebs into a town near me I'm satisfied :D Even though Stratford is WAY too busy, and the innercitytown dual carriageways are intense!!

Ali; Haha! yep :D I'd say reading that qualifies! Not that I've ever heard of it. But Elizabethen makes sense ;) Enjoy Spidey3!

radiowaves - an Englishman might consider it to be part of their heritage. Afterall we are educated in Shakespeare, so it makes sense to get a better understanding of who you're going to be force-fed about for several years :p Stratford is full of tourists, which I'd say would define it as a place respected for heralding a certain kind of culture that has inspired more than just Englishmen :) I agree a gallery would be just as interesting and cultured, and more fun if you insist!!

Matt,
QuoteI've just finished authoring a DVD about monks, and another DVD about Hitler in the same week!
One for the CV :D How about authoring a CD-ROM called AGS Annual #2 ?

:P

QuoteCongrabulations!

I once screamed at one of the actors during a theatre performance. I don't know about culture, but there was definitely a large amount of shock involved.

Hahahaha :D I heard in Shakespeare's day the audience were expected to boo and jeer characters and stuff, of even the most serious tragedy plays. It's a shame it can't be that kind of atmosphere in some performances! Maybe it is, just not in Stratford! Not that I'd know when to boo or jeer anyway ;p

Thanks for all the replies! I guess there is some culture going on :D culture may be a bit vague! What I really meant was just like artistic culture! Famous plays and playwrights etc. Art galleries, monuments, etc. Even modern culture things :p Whatever!
