Title: D&D on the forums
Post by: JudgeDeadd on Tue 26/10/2004 18:38:18
I've decided to start a D&D game on the forums.
If you want to play it, reply with your name, your class (Fighter/Mage/Cleric/Thief), your race (Human/Elf/Dwarf/Halfling/Gnome/Half-Elf). Gnomes, Halflings and Dwarves cannot be mages.

Oh man, that's 1st or 2nd ed.  Why don't you just go back to chainmail?  CHAINMAIL!  I mean, THAC0?  Why put yourselves through that? Not to mention the complete cookie cutter classes.

Also, those stats you rolled?  I believe that those are mandatory reroll terrain, there.  The highest stat is a 14, no one's getting bonuses of any sort at all.  Really, consider 3.5, it much better.  I've played everything since 1st ed, as well as palladium, white wolf games, fudge, paranoia and Call of Cthulhu.  Do everyone a favor, switch systems and reroll those characters.

It might be a good AIM chat room game. If I remeber correctly, there's a d20 command.

I rather start a text adventure.... err... I mean.... "interactive fiction". 4th edition rules. yeah. 4th edition.

You're standing in front of a mansion. The door seems to be closed shut. You see a rug, some shrubs, a mailbox... and that's about it.

There are 2 blue berries.

> Pick up berries.

Unknown phrase: "Pick up"

> Take berries.

Unknown phrase: "Take"

> Quit

To get back on-topic:
I'd personally like to, but I have doubts whether this would work on the forums within a reasonable frame of time...

Okay, here's the first one.

You are in a small room, with walls, ceiling and floor made of wood. There is a small window here, you can see a forest when looking through it. There is also a door and a table here. On the table, there is a small sack.

D&D Roleplaying is not unlike playing adventure games. In a situation like this, you are most likely to look at your surroundings, be sceptical with the small sack, talk/interact with other players...
Eventually we will come across monsters which we fight (and maybe steal their equipment afterwards) and thus we'll gain experience.

I might as well demonstrate...
>I look for traps around the sack

If none are found (NOTE: The game master might throw a dice to determine whether I find the (potentially) hidden trap or not! That does not mean that there is no trap!),

>I open the sack to take a look inside and being a dwarf grab everything that looks valuable...
>I ask Goél who he is and what we are doing in that freaking cottage...

Btw. I'm quite a frequent role-player, although I haven't too much experience with D&D...

I would like to have a shot at this too. I have been roleplaying for many years and running a RP mud online for the past 7 years.

I'll be a Halfling Thief, if it's still open.

I played "Das schwarze Auge" a german P&P RPG for some time but never D&D. But, well, I would like to enter. I'm an elf-mage.

Is this still alive?
Just wanted to prevent this from fading into obscurity after all the forum trouble and stuff...

@JudgeDeadd: Would you mind giving a short explanation of the rules? I have forgotten most of what I knew about D&D...

I've sent a PM to all the players. Hopefully they'll join soon.
A brief reminder of your current situation:

You are in a small room, with walls, ceiling and floor made of wood. There is a small window here, you can see a forest when looking through it. There is also a door and a table here. On the table, there is a small sack.

Cool! I've really been looking forward to this!

I renew my previous post: I search for traps, grab the sack, look insode and afterwards ask the others why we are here and who the hell they are (while inconspiciously letting the sack's valuables disappear into my pockets...)
Title: Re: D&D on the forums
Post by: JudgeDeadd on Tue 16/11/2004 16:12:11
You haven't found any traps.
You find a knife and a pouch containing 15 gold pieces in the sack.

I look around the room for any clue where exactly we are. After that I answer the question telling the dwarf that I have no idea where we are. I tell him that I won't say my name and who I am if he doesn't tell me something about himself before.

You don't see anything special, the forest behind the window looks ordinary.

I will tell everyone that I am here for loot, and more loot. I will move to the door check if it is locked, and look through if it isn't.

Hollowman: The door is not locked. You open it slightlty to lok thru it...
and...

3 ugly goblins rush into the roomm, waving their clubs!

Post by: Isegrim on Wed 17/11/2004 17:26:29
After introducing myself to everybody (if there is time) as "Isegrim, Axe-Dwarf-Without-Axe for hire", I scream at the goblins, waving my knife madly!
And if they don't flee, I'll let 'em taste cold steel!

P.S. Ah, yes... this is D&D as I like it (honestly!)... I don't know where I am and who the others are, but there's goblins and that means fun...

I get ready to fight with an angry look at Hollowman 'cause he opened the door without thinking before doing it.

Really? Goblins are all right, but I prefer it if I know who the other people are.

I agree to that. Please explain the rules a bit. As I said before I know RPG's but I never played D&D.  :-\

The rules... it's very hard, if not impossible to explain them shortly. But I'll try anyway...
Your THAC0 is your "accuracy" and AC is armor class, it's harder to hit you if you have smaller armor class. To gain levels, you gain experience by fighting or adventring. Eah level I'll reroll your hit points (your health) and give mages new spell. Blah blah blah. What exactly do you want me to explain?...
One of the goblins hits Isengrim, delang 1 damage!
Two other goblins attack Sinitrena and Hollowman, but miss!
Isengrim and Sinitrena miss the goblins!

THAC0 stands for To Hit Armour Class Zero, it's a level based atribute that decreases as you gain class levels.  Its progression varies by class, with fighters (and barbarians, paladins, but he's not using them) having good progression, and wizards havning the worst.  It's a terrible thing.

Your armour class is how hard it is for things to hit you.  It is 10 - dex bonus (if any, starts at 16 in the old editions, as do all stat bonuses.  You guys are screwed, by the way) - equipment bonus - magic and misc bonuses.  Lower is better and at higher levels -30 isn't uncommon for a really decked out fighter.  Attacking is a simple matter.

You roll a d20, then add some bonuses, subtract others, compare your thac0 and the opponents AC, and then just give up and go home.  (3rd ed solves this by turning thac0 into base attack bonus, and making AC go up instead of down, thus you add everything, and if your modified roll matches or exceeds the enemy's AC, you hit).  If you do hit, you roll weapon damage, which varies by weapon (longswords are a d8, shortswords are a d6).

That's combat at it's most basic.  Have I mentioned that you guys are doomed with stats like those?  And that you should really switch to 3.5, which you can find pdfs for easily.  Better yet, buy them.

Recommended reading: this overpowered (but funny) story (http://geocities.com/p_simoons/zip/disgust.zip). :)

If you want, you can download rtfs of all third-and-a-halfth-edition rulebooks at the official wizards.com site. It's legal since they've made it open source gaming content.

And screwed? Come on, it's goblins! You can single-handedly outnumber five of them!
