Darth Mandarb

My friend and I one time downloaded a HUGE pack of fonts ... it was like 80MB of fonts and took over 24 hours.

Granted this was back in the day ... we were using a 33.6 modem (not 56K).  I can't remember any significant downloads on the old 56K modem.  Haven't used on in years.  Been fortunate to have broadband everywhere since 2001.

AlbinoPanther

Serbia is a small and poor country so it is possible that there are some 33.6 modems in somebodys PC.

LOL this is the stupidiest topic ever ( this was our chance to be the winner of something in this glorius forum)

Squinky

I downloaded a movie or two with my dial-up. It took me like 3 days straight, on a 28 k connection.

So how many MB it was?

Squinky

they were ussaully around two cd's worth, which I think is 1400 meg?

mozza

I have a 56k modem and the biggest thing I've downloaded would be about 12MB. It took ages! ;D
I can't believe that you would download that much Squinky! :o

Domino

Back in the day when i had dial-up, i wouldn't attempt to download anything over 20 MB because i knew it would take forever.  But when i switched to DSL 2 years ago, i downloaded anything i could get my hands on.  I downloaded the DOOM3 demo with broadband, and that still took awhile at 400+ MB. I feel sorry for the folks still using dial-up.

Once you go broadband, you will never go back.

Here is some of the stuff I downloaded with an extremely slow 56k modem. (and only one phone line, too!)

- Cream Drums Soundfont: 129 megs
- The Longest Journey Demo: 80 megs
- Free drum sampleset: 112 megs
- NSKit7 free: 70 megs

I think I downladed a movie aswell... I believe it was "House of a Thousand Corpses." That was about 200MB.

I know I downloaded other stuff, but I can't remember.
You. Me. Denny's.

i have a wireless internet connection. sometimes, it seems like i'm still using dial-up because my brothers are always playing wow.

I would just turn it on at night, and use a download assistant. I had a pager if work needed me, heh...

modgeulator

I think the biggest single file I ever downloaded on a 56k modem was "The Dark Eye" off the Home of the Underdogs site.

335mb, took about two days I think. Disaster struck though, and there were a few bytes corrupted in the download. Not wanting to download the whole thing again I somehow found the corrupted part of the file, cut off the end, tricked it into re-downloading that section and appended the end of the original download back on again.
Well, that's my geeky dial-up war-story.

Phemar

I downloaded Half Life 2 through Steam once ... how big is THAT game? 4 Gig? O_o

But then again I have a 64k leased line ... It still counts though, right?

Las Naranjas

I downloaded 330 mb of a game from HOTU. I also got a few other 100mb plus games.

It ended up not working.

I also downloaded 600 mb of movie once, but it turned out to be a fake file. Interestingly there was a strange occurance that made it download at 40kb/sec at times, on a 56k modem. I know this is impossible, but it came down in just a few hours, and windows seemed to think there was hundreds of mb of file there.
