Title: DirectX
Post by: Stupot on Fri 01/06/2007 14:35:55
Hey people.  I won't make this into a habit.  I've been trying to set up my webcam and I've finally got it working.  Now Skype won't recognise it and I was hoping it would because I want to talk to my Sister tomorrow (we're twins and its our birthday and I'm in Japan so this is gonna be the first time in 24 years that we won't be able to share our birthday together).

The reason Skype won't recognise it is that it says I need the latest version of DirectX... and I can't download this from the Microsoft Website because I don't have genuine windows.

Is there anywhere Else I can get the lastest DirectX or does anyone know a way round the Genuine Windows dabacle?

Cheers people... Last question I swear.  I'll be working on 'A Windowcleaner's Apprentice' soon I'm sure you're all really excited (pfffhhttt).

Generally windows patches, updates, and so on are available in redistributable form, for non internet connected computers. You can try that: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/DirectX-9.0c-Redistributable.shtml

are you using Windows XP?
the webcam function in skype won't work with any other version of windows.
there is always MSN though which should allow webcam and audio conversations at the same time, or if not you can use MSN for webcam and skype for chat.

Scotch - Good link mate, I praise you.  But I just clicked on it and it said it was going to take about 7 hours to download?.... is this normal for DiectX or was my computer just having a funny five minutes?

Boyd - Good Idea about using MSN, but it's been bad enough trying to help them set up Skype from the other side of the world, my family aren't a very comuter literate bunch of folks.

Try a different mirror if the download time seems unreasonable (for 49MB), they have three on that site, and there are other places you can get this.

Do PC magazine cd-roms still come with DirectX? They used too. You might also have a fairly new game that has a DirectX upgrade with it, Stupot. Good luck! I hate DirectX :D

What a coincidence.

This is a new bookmark I added 15 minutes ago (I think it's all legal). And I just successfully downloaded DirectX 9 redist from it 10 minutes ago (I'm using genuine win XP. I did this just for some reason.)

I've sorted it.  I don't know why I didn't think to do this beforehand, I just downloaded it from Limewire.... bit risky i know, couldve been a virus or anything, but it seems it was the real deal because my webcam and Skype are getting on the the proverbial house on fire.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys.

I hate DX (especially DX10) and you now why coz Microsoft wanna encourage the people
to use that shit Vista by making DX10 compatible only with Windows Vista and if a game
comes out what needs DX10 then you will have to buy that Vista >:(

I hate DX!I Hate Microsoft! and I hate Windows XP/Vista! >:( >:( >:(

Wtcq: I don't see how your post might add anything to the ongoing topic... Think before you post.

DirectX is quite easy to acquire, even with pirated Windows. Also, there's some genuine-check cracks around, though it's hard to download any and I don't reccommend it to anyone with little experience on computers -- cracks sites are full of adware and viruses, that's why. I hope I didn't break "no warez" rule here... :(

All newer games usually ask if you want to upgrade your directX, what you need is most likely DX 9.0c, so any game that offers this should do.

Webcam in Skype is somewhat tricky to get to work, but main problem usually relies in webcam itself:
Does webcam work in your Windows?

Control Panel > Scanners and cameras

Does your cam show up there? Can you click on it and see your picture?
If so, Skype should recognize it. If not, try reinstalling the camera & drivers, rebooting, etc.

Sorry if you got thing solved already, dunno if you sorted out getting DX or cam to work.

Well you might think that i'm an asshole but
how the hell is it possible that you dont have the latest version of Dx
I have DX 9.0c almost a year ago or more every single game every single
pc magazines DVD has it.

(Sorry for postnd this but i want to know why didnt you acquired before??)

I couldn't understand a word you just said. That last rant you made about Vista isn't true- it's the other way around; most games aren't made to be played on Vista. Heck, Vista has such high security on it that it won't even let you download or install most games. :P

MS are limiting DX10 to Windows Vista. There are no DX10 only games yet, but when there are they will only run on Vista, that's what he was referring to. I can't really see a PC developer limiting themselves to DX10 for a few years, though, for a number of reasons.

i have actually seen a game in the shop that required Vista to play.
i hate how microsoft are trying to force people into buying vista, especially since it is SO annoying for the reasons that Steely mentioned, amongst others.
